Off-the-grid dream becomes nightmare in New Mexico compound Posted: 13 Aug 2018 05:56 AM PDT Relatives and neighbors say things began to go downhill for Lucas Morton, 39, shortly after he arrived in this vast alpine valley about 40 miles (64 km) north of Taos in a white moving van last December. The families set up home on a 10-acre plot of land that was near to one owned by Morton, a carpenter, but which actually belonged to U.S. Army veteran Jason Badger. The vet filed a court complaint but the Morton and Wahhaj families stayed on the land. |

Koreas to hold Pyongyang summit in September Posted: 13 Aug 2018 02:00 AM PDT North and South Korea agreed Monday to hold a summit in Pyongyang in September after high-level talks in the Demilitarized Zone that divides the peninsula. Tesla: Musk's tweet a bridge too far? Posted: 11 Aug 2018 06:31 PM PDT Tesla chief executive Elon Musk got into legal hot water this week after announcing on Twitter he had sufficient financing already in hand to take the electric automaker private. Many in US financial circles are wondering where he will he get all this money, and have turned skeptical despite the reverence in which they normally hold Musk, who founded the company in 2003 to transform cars into tech marvels. The transaction could amount to at least $50 billion if Musk keeps his 20 percent stake in the company. |

Iran's problems 'internal, not just sanctions': Khamenei Posted: 13 Aug 2018 02:13 AM PDT Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Monday that the country's economic problems were the result of internal mismanagement by the government and not just US pressure. "Economic experts and many officials believe the cause of this issue is not foreign, it's internal," he said in a speech in Tehran, according to tweets released on his official account. Analysts say US hostility, including its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposition of sanctions, helped fuel the run on Iran's rial. |

Russia says will ditch U.S. securities amid sanctions: RIA Posted: 12 Aug 2018 06:21 AM PDT On Friday, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Russia would regard any U.S. move to curb the activities of its banks as a "declaration of economic war" and would take retaliatory action. Washington said on Wednesday it would impose fresh sanctions by the end of August after it determined that Moscow had used a nerve agent against a former Russian agent and his daughter in Britain, sending Russia's rouble currency to a two-year low. Speaking on a weekly TV talk show, Siluanov said the new U.S. sanctions, some of which could restrict purchases of Russian government bonds, were "unpleasant but not fatal". |
