IS captures Tora Bora, once bin Laden's Afghan hideout Posted: 15 Jun 2017 09:17 AM PDT Islamic State fighters have captured Tora Bora, a mountain cave complex in eastern Afghanistan that was once the hideout of Osama bin Laden, officials said Thursday, despite pressure on the jihadists from US-led forces. The militants seized the territory from the Taliban this week, in a strategic and symbolic victory just two months after the US military dropped its largest non-nuclear bomb ever used on a nearby IS stronghold. The fall of Tora Bora after days of heavy fighting, which forced hundreds of residents to flee, marks a setback to the US military which has vowed to defeat IS's local affiliate this year as they make inroads into Afghanistan. |

Jeronimo Yanez shot Mr Castile after the black motorist informed him that he had a gun in his car. Mr Castile was licenced to have the weapon, and had been told to inform officers of the firearm in those situations for his safety. |

In Syria's Raqa, anti-IS fighters advance at night Posted: 15 Jun 2017 07:02 PM PDT Faced with an onslaught of weaponised drones, mortar rounds and snipers, US-backed fighters in Syria's Raqa say the cover of night is a good ally against Islamic State group jihadists. The Syrian Democratic Forces are battling to oust the extremists from the northern city after breaking into its first neighbourhood last week. After piercing into and taking the southeastern district of Al-Meshleb, the SDF fighters are now advancing towards the Old City. |

Here's a draft of the Senate's healthcare bill they so don't want you to see Posted: 16 Jun 2017 05:00 AM PDT For weeks, Republicans in the Senate have done everything they can to try and hide their proposed healthcare bill from the public — because transparency is sooooo 2016. Thankfully, we've obtained a very special draft of the proposed legislation, courtesy of an anonymous owl that flew by and dropped it on my desk. The owl asked that he not be named in our report for security reasons. SEE ALSO: Give Trumpcare a break: Here are all the pre-existing conditions it will cover To be fair: it's not like the Republicans needed to disclose the details of legislation that could throw over 24 million people off healthcare. They're still reeling from the time President Obama passed Obamacare without their support — and as Senators, it's their constitutional duty to stick it to the meanies. The party spent close to a decade complaining about Obamacare's alleged death spirals. Obviously, they had a better plan in the wings, otherwise they wouldn't have complained this much. Here's the leaked draft of their very, very good proposed legislation. Image: ambar del moral/mashableThe bill is expected to be finalized without any public hearings, just as the Founding Fathers would have wanted it. WATCH: The weirdest 'Batman' movie never made |

US deploys mobile artillery rocket launchers in Syria Posted: 15 Jun 2017 03:10 PM PDT The United States has deployed mobile artillery rocket launchers in southern Syria, aiming to defend its At-Tanaf base where it trains anti-Islamic State forces, Pentagon officials confirmed Thursday. Officials would not say how many of the HIMARS units, a truck-mounted multiple rocket launch system, had been moved into the area. The move sparked a protest from Russia, which supports Assad and said the HIMARS system would be used against Syrian government forces. |

Russia accuses US of deploying missiles in Syria Posted: 15 Jun 2017 12:07 PM PDT Russia on Thursday accused the US-led coalition of deploying missiles against Syrian troops at a garrison in the east of the country, where rebels battling the Islamic State group are being trained. "Forces of the US-led anti-IS coalition have repeatedly issued strikes on Syrian government forces fighting IS near the Jordanian border. "It's not hard to guess that similar strikes will be continued against contingents of the Syrian army in the future using HIMARS," it said. |

Boring tablet space heats up as Microsoft exec says iPad Pro wouldn’t exist without Surface Posted: 16 Jun 2017 04:45 AM PDT Apple's just-released iPad Pro represents a brief moment of excitement in a market segment that is otherwise a terrible bore. Tablets are great devices, of course, but the market is already in decline following the realization that for most people, tablets cannot actually replace either a laptop or a smartphone. That places them squarely in a category with other luxury items; they're nice to have, but they're hardly a necessity. The new iPad Pro is the most powerful iPad Apple has ever made. In some tests, it's actually more powerful than the MacBook Pro. Apple fans who have purchased the new model appear to be enamored, and they've taken to social media to express their excitement. Even more exciting than the iPad Pro itself, however, are some recent comments about Apple's latest tablet that were made by an executive at Microsoft. In an interview with Business Insider, Microsoft's general manager for the Surface product line had some interesting things to say about Apple's new iPad Pro, which began shipping to customers earlier this week. According to Ryan Gavin, the iPad Pro is a "clear example" of Apple copying Microsoft's strategy. "Think about it, if we had been looking at [Apple] we wouldn't have made a product like Surface Pro or Surface Book," Gavin told the blog. "We have been learning and perfecting our products in the 2-in-1 category for years now. When Surface initially launched everyone was skeptical, including them. And then they followed, and the iPad Pro is a clear example of that." It's an interesting take on the history of the tablet market over the past few years, though Gavin isn't entirely wrong. Apple's iPad lineup has indeed gotten far more powerful over the years, and Apple focused far more on productivity during its most recent iPad launch than it ever has in the past. The increasing power and capability of the iPad line obviously has nothing to do with Microsoft or its Surface tablets — like every other company that sells smartphones, tablets, and/or computers, Apple's products grow more and more powerful as technologies improve. It is quite possible, however, that Apple's shift to an increased focus on productivity was in fact influenced by Microsoft's Surface lineup. Of course, if the Microsoft executive was to reach back a bit further in the tablet market's timeline, he would find a company that scrambled to catch up years after Apple's first introduced the iPad. And as we all remember, Microsoft failed miserably. Windows 8 was the company's first attempt to chase the iPad, with a UI designed for touch. It ended up being a disaster, and Microsoft was left to pick up the pieces with Windows 10. Did Microsoft readjust its strategy following the launch of the original iPad? Yes. Has Apple readjusted its strategy following the launch of the Surface line? Yes. In other words, this is a classic example of companies reacting to each other, which is something that happens across every area of the consumer electronics industry. |

Arrests in Egypt as opposition calls for islands protest Posted: 16 Jun 2017 01:26 AM PDT Egyptian police have arrested dozens of activists in the face of opposition calls for protests on Friday after parliament passed a controversial agreement to hand over two islands to Saudi Arabia. A lawyer working to release the activists said about 50 had been arrested across Egypt since parliament passed the treaty on Wednesday. "We hope the people show up (to protest) because without the people we can't defend what is their right," said former presidential candidate and opposition leader Hamdeen Sabbahi in a video message. |
