Trump immigration proposal divides GOP presidential field Posted: 17 Aug 2015 03:04 PM PDT DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Donald Trump is dividing his Republican presidential rivals anew with his call to rewrite the Constitution to crack down on millions of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, and to force Mexico to pay for a better border fence. Scott Walker embraced some of the plan Monday, but other contenders, such as Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina, dismissed elements as unworkable. |
IRS says cyberattacks more extensive than previously thought Posted: 17 Aug 2015 12:38 PM PDT The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said Monday a hacking attack into one of its computer databases revealed in May was much more extensive than previously thought, with nearly three times as many taxpayers hit by data theft. The IRS said in late May the tax return information of about 114,000 U.S. taxpayers had been illegally accessed by cyber criminals over the preceding four months, with another 111,000 unsuccessful attempts made. A new review has identified 220,000 additional incidents where data was breached, the tax collection agency said. |
Lockdown lifted at U.S. nuke site after sniffer-dog false alarm Posted: 17 Aug 2015 04:15 PM PDT No explosive residue or device was found on the truck after a search by law enforcement, the Savannah River Site said in a statement on its Facebook page. The dog had barked at a truck that services vending machines, said an official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The facility, which was put in lockdown for a "potential security event" following the alarm, purifies highly enriched uranium and is part of the DoE's nuclear arm. |
White House launches plan to counter explosion in heroin use Posted: 17 Aug 2015 09:30 AM PDT The White House announced a new strategy on Monday to tackle the explosion in heroin use in a collection of eastern states, focusing on treating addicts rather than punishing them and targeting high-level suppliers for arrest. The move is a response to a sharp rise in the use of heroin and opiate-based painkillers, which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control has described as an epidemic. An estimated 45 percent of U.S. heroin users are also addicted to prescription painkillers. |
Trump takes a detour off the trail, reports for jury duty Posted: 17 Aug 2015 04:13 PM PDT NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump pulled up in a long black limousine and gave a very presidential wave as he made his way into the building. Then the billionaire promptly found himself seated next to ordinary, wage-earning, subway-riding New Yorkers, forced to wait — and wait some more — for the wheels of justice to turn. |

Treacherous terrain hampers rescue efforts for crashed Indonesian plane Posted: 17 Aug 2015 05:19 AM PDT By Hidayat Setiaji and Fergus Jensen JAKARTA (Reuters) - Treacherous terrain in Indonesia's Papua province on Monday hampered rescuers' efforts to reach a passenger plane that crashed with 54 aboard, the latest in a string of aviation disasters in the sprawling Southeast Asian archipelago. Rescuers have yet to detect the aircraft's black boxes and news of survivors depends on a ground team now trekking slowly towards the mountainous area, the rescue official overseeing the search said. Rescue teams arriving at the site will have to build a helipad to fly in help, Guru told a news conference in the Indonesian capital, adding that 266 people were involved in the operation, while 11 aircraft scoured the thickly forested area. |
