NYC police officer charged in stairwell shooting of unarmed man Posted: 11 Feb 2015 03:23 PM PST By Sebastien Malo NEW YORK (Reuters) - A rookie New York City police officer was charged with second-degree manslaughter and five other offenses on Wednesday for the fatal shooting of an unarmed man in a dark stairwell of a housing project last November. Officer Peter Liang was patrolling with his partner in the Brooklyn housing project at about 11:15 p.m. on Nov. 20 when his gun discharged a single bullet, killing Akai Gurley, 28, who was in the stairwell a flight below with a female companion. Liang's indictment by a grand jury stands in stark contrast to other cases of police officers who have killed unarmed black men. Last year, grand juries in New York and Missouri found no criminal wrongdoing in the two incidents that caught national attention, sparking waves of angry protests. |
Shooting deaths of young Muslims leave North Carolina community reeling Posted: 11 Feb 2015 04:34 PM PST By Colleen Jenkins CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Reuters) - In post-9/11 America, Aya Zouhri and her fellow Muslim female friends who cover their heads with scarves say they are used to getting occasional dirty looks or ugly comments from strangers. "The way he said it was very much like, 'I'm actually worried something could happen to you,'" the senior global studies major recalled outside a room at the university where Muslim students gathered for afternoon prayers. Several Muslim students who attend the university said they have always felt safe and accepted in Chapel Hill, a college town about 30 miles (48 km) from Raleigh that is known for basketball and affordable higher education. Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, was a University of North Carolina dental student, his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, was preparing to start at the dentistry school in the fall, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, was a sophomore at nearby North Carolina State University, where the couple were both alumni. |
U.S. gunman kills three young Muslims; motive disputed Posted: 11 Feb 2015 05:11 PM PST By Colleen Jenkins CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Reuters) - A gunman who had posted anti-religious messages on Facebook and quarreled with neighbors was charged with killing three young Muslims in what police said on Wednesday was a dispute over parking and possibly a hate crime. Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, a full-time paralegal student from Chapel Hill, was charged with first-degree murder in Tuesday's shootings around 5 p.m. two miles (three km) from the University of North Carolina campus. The victims were newlyweds Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, a University of North Carolina dental student, and his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, and Yusor's sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19. |
US diplomats in hasty Yemen evacuation Posted: 11 Feb 2015 03:25 PM PST The United States, Britain and France rushed to close their embassies over security fears in Yemen on Wednesday, with US staff destroying top-secret documents and abandoning vehicles at the airport. Long on the front line of the US war against Al-Qaeda, Yemen has descended into chaos since the militia, known as Huthis, seized the capital Sanaa in September and ousted the parliament last week. The United Nations has demanded the reinstatement of the Western-backed leader Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi -- who resigned last month and is under effective house arrest -- but its efforts to broker a deal have failed so far. After weeks of internal deliberations and drawing down staff, Washington finally closed its Sanaa embassy over the "deteriorating security situation," evacuating staff to Muscat late Tuesday on a private Omani jet. |
Jon Stewart leaving Comedy Central's 'The Daily Show' Posted: 10 Feb 2015 09:26 PM PST By Eric Kelsey and Piya Sinha-Roy LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Jon Stewart, famed for his biting television satire of politicians and the media, will leave his job as host of Comedy Central's parody newscast "The Daily Show" later this year, he told his studio audience at the end of Tuesday night's episode. "It's been the honor of my professional life, and I thank you for watching it, for hate-watching it, whatever reason you are tuning in for." The announcement came after Comedy Central's other big name, former "Daily Show" contributor Stephen Colbert, ended his tenure as star of companion show "The Colbert Report" and left the network in December to succeed the retiring David Letterman as host of the "Late Show" on CBS. The New York-based "The Daily Show," which airs weeknights at 11 p.m. on the Viacom Inc-owned Comedy Central, is expected to continue, the network said, but a replacement for Stewart has yet to be named. |
