Around 100 people feared buried in China landslide: authorities Posted: 23 Jun 2017 08:38 PM PDT Around 100 people are feared buried after a landslide smashed through their village in southwest China's Sichuan Province early Saturday, local officials said, as they launched an emergency rescue operation. Landslides are a frequent danger in rural and mountainous parts of China, particularly at times of heavy rains. |

Deadly landslide in southwestern China Posted: 24 Jun 2017 08:39 AM PDT Fears grew for 141 people missing in China after a landslide buried their mountain village in southwestern Sichuan province on Saturday, with reports that only three survivors had been pulled out of the mud and rock hours after the calamity struck. The landslide swept over 46 homes as dawn broke at around 6 a.m. in Xinmo village in Maoxian county, a remote mountainous area of north Sichuan close to the region of Tibet, according to the official Xinhua state news agency. President Xi Jinping urged on the rescue effort, but state broadcaster CCTV reported that by midday the only people rescued were a couple and their two-month-old baby. |

UAE sees 'parting of ways' if Qatar does not accept Arab demands Posted: 24 Jun 2017 07:40 AM PDT By Aziz El Yaakoubi DUBAI (Reuters) - A senior United Arab Emirates official said on Saturday that if Qatar did not accept an ultimatum issued by fellow Arab states which imposed a boycott this month on the tiny Gulf Arab nation, there would be a "parting of ways". The 13-point list of demands from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the UAE include closing the Al Jazeera satellite television network, curbing relations with Iran, shutting a Turkish base in Doha and paying reparations. The demands are apparently aimed at dismantling Qatar's two-decade-old interventionist foreign policy, which has reflected the clout generated by its vast natural gas and oil wealth but incensed conservative Arab peers over its alleged support for Islamists they regard as mortal threats to their dynastic rule. |

Donald Trump defies calls to appoint envoy to combat anti-Semitism around the world Posted: 24 Jun 2017 10:44 AM PDT Donald Trump has defied calls to appoint a special envoy to combat anti-Semitism across the world despite growing pressure from Jewish groups and Congress. The two remaining staffers in the US State Department's office to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism are reportedly set to be reassigned next month, which will leave the branch completely unstaffed after 1 July. President Trump is legally required to appoint a Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, a position created under former president George W. Bush. |

"At least 123 people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in a fire which erupted after an oil tanker turned over and victims rushed to collect spilt fuel," senior local government official Rana Mohammad Saleem Afzal told state television. |

If Baghdadi is dead, next IS leader likely to be Saddam-era officer Posted: 24 Jun 2017 03:49 AM PDT By Maher Chmaytelli BAGHDAD (Reuters) - If Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is confirmed dead, he is likely to be succeeded by one of his top two lieutenants, both of whom were Iraqi army officers under late dictator Saddam Hussein. Experts on Islamist groups see no clear successor but regard Iyad al-Obaidi and Ayad al-Jumaili as the leading contenders, though neither would be likely to assume Baghdadi's title of "caliph", or overall commander of Muslims. Russia's defense ministry said last week Baghdadi may have been killed in an air strike in Syria and Interfax news agency quoted a senior Russian parliamentarian on Friday as saying the likelihood that he had been killed was close to 100 percent. |

Invasive Asian carp found near Great Lakes beyond electrified barrier Posted: 24 Jun 2017 09:26 AM PDT Asian carp can weigh up to 100lbs and often outcompete other fish. An Asian carp has been found just miles from the Great Lakes, beyond an electrified barrier designed to keep the invasive species from entering the ecosystem and wreaking the sort of damage seen elsewhere in the US. The carp was sent to Southern Illinois University for further analysis. |
139 dead, more than 100 injured in Pakistan oil tanker fire Posted: 25 Jun 2017 06:59 AM PDT An overturned oil tanker exploded in a huge fireball in Pakistan Sunday, killing at least 139 people and injuring scores as crowds scavenging for fuel ignored warnings to stay clear, officials and witnesses said. The horrific early morning tragedy came hours before Pakistan was due to begin Eid al-Fitr celebrations marking the end of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan. Details were sketchy but some witnesses suggested the tanker had suffered a burst tyre, said regional police chief Raja Riffat. |

Iraqi forces free hundreds of civilians in Mosul Old City battles as death toll mounts Posted: 24 Jun 2017 08:17 AM PDT By Marius Bosch MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraqi forces opened exit routes for hundreds of civilians to flee the Old City of Mosul on Saturday as they battled to retake the quarter from Islamic State militants mounting a last stand in what was the de facto capital of their self-declared caliphate. U.S.-trained urban warfare units were channeling their onslaught along two perpendicular streets that converge in the heart of the Old City, aiming to isolate the jihadist insurgents in four pockets. The week-old battle in the Old City is turning into the deadliest of the eight-month U.S.-backed campaign to take back the northern city, which fell to the militants in June 2014. |

Both Mr Macron and Mr Schwarzeneggar are known for their outspoken criticism of Mr Trump's decision to pull the US out of the Paris climate change agreement. Mr Macron - who along with a number of other European leaders has decried the decision to have America withdraw from the deal - has called on US scientists to emigrate to France. |

Hundreds celebrate 'mud people' festival in the Philippines Posted: 24 Jun 2017 02:24 AM PDT Filipino devotees muddied their faces and covered themselves with dried banana leaves on Saturday to celebrate a religious festival which also has roots in Japan's occupation of the country during World War II. Hundreds of men, women and children walked to a muddy field at dawn and covered themselves from head to toe with mud and dried banana leaves, with some residents saying their appearance was meant to evoke the attire of John the Baptist in Biblical times. |
Amnesty for militants in Syria's Raqqa aims to promote stability Posted: 24 Jun 2017 06:20 AM PDT By Michael Georgy AIN ISSA, Syria (Reuters) - A civil council expected to rule Raqqa once Islamic State is dislodged from the Syrian city pardoned 83 of the jihadist group's low-ranking militants on Saturday, a goodwill gesture designed to promote stability. The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have gained significant ground in the battle for Raqqa, the operational base for Islamic State over the past three years and a symbol of its self-proclaimed caliphate. Senior SDF figures predict Raqqa could fall within months. |

How To Make the Best Iced Coffee Of Your Life Posted: 25 Jun 2017 08:00 AM PDT If your idea of "iced coffee" is "letting my hot coffee get cold" then, honey, we need to talk—you deserve better. There are myriad ways to make iced coffee, but if you want to do anything well, you've got to pare down your options and really focus: Hone your skills at one or two techniques rather than dabbling with a dozen different brewers. Think of them as the poached egg and the scrambled egg of iced coffee. |

Intelligence Ministry agents "were able to arrest a group linked to Daesh (Islamic state) that intended to carry out terror operations in religious cities ..., and (seized) explosive and suicide attack equipment," the television said. Which is the best Haribo candy? Posted: 25 Jun 2017 06:00 AM PDT It's not just the bears. Friends, let us repeat: it's not just the bears. The (wonderful) world of Haribo is rife with unimaginably delicious, squishy, delightful candies ... and a few duds. Such is the world of the sweet treat. So we grabbed a bunch of Haribo candies available in the U.S. — FYI, some of the labels are in German because that was the deal at Economy Candy — tasted each, then judged away. SEE ALSO: Dogs, ranked You may disagree with these rankings. That's okay! It's subjective. But if you catch yourself feeling angry, please promise us you'll get yourself a packet of Haribo to make yourself feel better. And now: The embarrassing Berries: Berries are aesthetically pleasing, but they do not taste good. In fact, they taste bad — far too sugary with no flavor payoff — and leave a sweater-y film on your teeth. Just put them in a clear jar and leave them there. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Gummi Frogs: Taste like plastic. Impossible to chew. And the frog speaking German on our bag reminded us of Pepe, which is frankly a real bummer. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Mini Rainbow Frogs: Unfortunately, the white marshmallow-y section has ruined what was otherwise a perfectly good gummy. Also, Rainbow Frogs are so small that popping one in your mouth isn't super satisfying. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Tropifruitti: Oh my god, these suck so much! They taste like a hospital smells. Bad! Give these to your enemies. Image: Mashable/Lili SamsThe fine Dinosaurs: Cool shapes, but the flavors are not particularly distinguishable. Said one staffer, "I would never want to eat more than three of these." Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Smurfs: Smurfs are strawberry and raspberry flavored, which are generally great flavors anyway, so it works out fine. They do get stuck in your teeth easily and are maybe too chewy. Smurfs are fine. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Fizzy Cola: Sadly, Fizzy Cola is inferior to Happy Cola because of whatever lemon-lime business it is attempting. Verdict: fine. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Alphabet Letters: Fun to spell with, but it's hard to remember anything else about them. Fine. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams The good Rattle-Snakes: Here, some flavors are clearly better than others. Take it from us: the white and red gummies are bright and fruity without being overly saccharine — a delightful experience. The other ones are a little more ... whatever. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Happy Cherries: A classic fave in a lovely shape. Highly Instagrammable. However, it must be said: Happy Cherries are polarizing. Said one staffer, "They taste like bad breath to me." Surprising! Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Fruit Salad: The way these candies rattle around in the bag is unnerving. The grapefruit ones are the best. Image: Mashable/Lili SamsThe *chef's kiss* Sour S'ghetti: This tart, delicate masterpiece is the perfect candy to eat when you're watching TV alone in bed. Just shovel it into your mouth by the palmful. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Happy Cola: A cola flavored gummy sounds weird, but the flavor here is surprisingly subtle and nice. Good for people who like Coke Icees. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Gold-Bears: These little friends are classic, and the red ones are objectively the best. FYI, Gold-Bears taste even better when they're a little old and a little chewy — or after they've been in the fridge for a while. (You should also try this with Australian-style licorice, by the way.) Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Sour Gold-Bears: The green apple Sour Gold-Bear alone is enough to catapult these guys over their classic counterparts. If you'd like to exfoliate the inside of your mouth, eat a whole bag. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Ginger-Lemon: Very refreshing and not super sweet — like if cough drops tasted good. Gift these to your favorite adult. Image: Mashable/Lili Sams Twin Snakes: Two snakes diverge in a distant wood. Just kidding! They stay together forever and become delicious Twin Snakes: one sour, one sweet. The sour doesn't involve a coating of sugar, either — those sneks are tangy and fruity all on their own. Image: Mashable/Martha TesemaThe #1 best Peaches: Peaches are as close as a gummy can get to an actual slice of peach (which is not very close, but still). Friends, they are so good — sugary on the outside and delightfully gooey on the inside. You will exclaim when you eat them. Image: Mashable/Lili SamsIn conclusion, . UK Labour leader Corbyn says will 'try to force early election' Posted: 24 Jun 2017 08:38 AM PDT British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has vowed to "try to force an early general election" after Prime Minster Theresa May lost her parliamentary majority, in an interview published Saturday. Corbyn's Labour Party outperformed expectations in this month's election, turning what was predicted to be a procession for May into a disaster, severely weakening her authority as Britain kicks off crucial Brexit talks. A poll for the paper asking the public who would make the best prime minister has put Corbyn ahead for the first time, although other surveys have revealed little appetite for another vote after two tumultuous years for British voters. |
China's Xi to attend Hong Kong handover anniversary Posted: 24 Jun 2017 08:43 PM PDT President Xi Jinping will visit Hong Kong this week to celebrate 20 years since the former British colony's return to China, state media confirmed Sunday, a trip that will stoke resentment among pro-democracy activists. It will be Xi's first visit to Hong Kong since the head of the Communist Party became president in 2013. The Chinese leader will also take part in the inauguration of the fifth administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the semi-autonomous city's government. |
