U.S. urges Syria rebels to attend peace talks, slams government Posted: 16 Jan 2014 02:49 PM PST By Arshad Mohammed and Lesley Wroughton WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States urged Syria's opposition on Thursday to attend January 22 peace talks and criticized its government for suggesting the meeting should be about fighting terrorism rather than forging a political settlement. The comments by Secretary of State John Kerry, less than a week before the talks are to begin, suggest some uncertainty by the United States over whether the opposition will show up at the U.N.-hosted conference in Montreux, Switzerland. The main umbrella opposition body in exile, the Syrian National Coalition, which is riven with internal divisions, will decide on Friday whether it will attend the conference. Syria's centrist internal opposition group, the National Coordination Body, on Thursday said it would not attend. |

Kerry urges Syria opposition to join peace talks Posted: 16 Jan 2014 01:19 PM PST On the eve of a key meeting, US Secretary of State John Kerry Thursday made a powerful plea to the divided Syrian opposition to join landmark peace talks aimed at installing a new government. Next week's peace conference in Switzerland was "the best opportunity for the opposition to achieve the goals of the Syrian people and the revolution," Kerry said in a surprise statement to reporters. Despite months of cajoling and negotiations, the Syrian opposition has yet to agree to sit down at the table with members of the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad to chart a path to end the war. The UN-led peace conference, to be attended by some 35 countries, will open on January 22 in the Swiss city of Montreux, and then move to Geneva. |

Egyptians back constitution, opening way to Sisi presidential run Posted: 16 Jan 2014 11:53 AM PST By Tom Perry and Maggie Fick CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptians overwhelmingly approved a new constitution by referendum, state media reported on Thursday, a widely expected outcome that nudges army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ever closer to a bid for the presidency. The vote advances a transition plan the military-backed government unveiled after deposing Islamist president Mohamed Mursi last July following mass unrest over his rule. The constitution won wide support among the many Egyptians who favored Mursi's removal. The Muslim Brotherhood had called for a boycott, saying the vote was part of a coup that deposed an elected leader and revived a brutal police state. |
