‘Time to join the NRA.’ Calls to repeal the Second Amendment set off commenters

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 02:43 PM PDT

'Time to join the NRA.' Calls to repeal the Second Amendment set off commenters"Everyone has an opinion, thankfully we have the constitution." "I can think of fewer things that would create a state of open rebellion in the United States." Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens's call for a repeal of the Second Amendment has Newsroom readers up in arms. In a New York Times op-ed piece, Stevens said March for Our Lives protesters asking for gun law reform should ask for more: "They should demand a repeal of the Second Amendment." The vast majority of the thousands of Newsroom comments on the Yahoo News report show strong opposition: "I have never owned a gun in my life, but fully understand the importance of the Second Amendment." President Trump, meanwhile, completely dismissed Stevens's call to repeal, tweeting, "The Second Amendment will never be repealed!" The Second Amendment says: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Stevens called for the repeal in order to weaken the National Rifle Association. The NRA answered back with its own statement: "We will unapologetically continue to fight to protect this fundamental freedom." What do you think? Join the conversation in Newsroom.

Qantas chief floats 'cargo class' concept for Australia-to-Britain flights

Posted: 27 Mar 2018 08:40 PM PDT

Qantas chief floats 'cargo class' concept for Australia-to-Britain flightsAlan Joyce, the Chief Executive Office of Qantas Airways, has suggested creating  a new class of cabin for its ultra long-haul services - one that could include making use of the cargo hold.   Fresh from launching the first direct passenger service to Europe, linking Perth with London's Heathrow, Mr Joyce reportedly expanded on his vision for "Project Sunrise" - the airline's goal to fly non-stop from Sydney and Melbourne to the UK and also directly to New York within four years. Part of his grand plan includes exploring the use of the cargo hold to create train-like berths and a space for passengers to exercise, Fairfax Media reported.  "One of the concepts that we have is maybe if we're not carrying freight you do something lower where cargo is on the aircraft, do you have an area where people can walk? Do you have berths like on a train?" Mr Joyce reportedly told the Australia-United Kingdom Chamber of Commerce in London on Tuesday. "There's a lot of 'out there' thinking that's going on," he told the audience, according to a recording of Mr Joyce's comments that was leaked to Fairfax Media.  What was the first flight from Britain to Australia like? "I don't know if in 2022 if there's another going to be another class but if there is Qantas is likely to be the airline that creates it." At a separate event in London, Mr Joyce said "nothing is off the table". "Could some of the freight areas that we may not use, be used as an exercise area?" he asked. The CEO has described the "Project Sunrise" routes as the "last frontier" of aviation, after which all of the world's major cities will have non-stop air links. Top 10 | The world's longest commercial flights Qantas's first Perth-London service landed in the U.K. Sunday after a 9,000-mile trip. Though not quite the world's longest flight - the record is currently held by a Doha-Auckland service operated by Qatar Airways - the route signals the beginning of the end of the so-called Kangaroo Route, which has seen planes make the journey from Europe to Australia in a series of hops since the advent of aviation. Mr Joyce said he's confident that Boeing and Airbus SE will be able to eke out sufficient extra range from future models to allow Qantas to fly from Sydney and Melbourne direct to London and New York as soon as 2022.
