Why the Bowe Bergdahl deal is a disaster for travelers Posted: Let me get one thing straight before I go any further: I am glad Bowe Bergdahl is home. I am a firm believer in "Leave No Man Behind." I added my voice via social media to the campaign for his release for years. I am, however, not happy about how it came about and what it means for millions of Americans who travel abroad every year. |

Did Boko Haram really abduct 91 more people? No one knows Posted: 25 Jun 2014 08:19 AM PDT Indeed, with every report of a Boko Haram abduction the truth about the deadly insurgency and the facts about its actions become more elusive. Abubakar Shekau, the man who says he leads the group, regularly releases videos bragging about attacks and spouting his harsh version of Islamic law, which includes condemnation of all things Western, especially Western-style education. |

South African platinum miners return after 5-month strike Posted: 25 Jun 2014 10:32 AM PDT By Ed Stoddard MARIKANA South Africa (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of South African platinum miners returned to work on Wednesday after wage deals ended the longest and most damaging strike in the country's history. The five-month strike hit 40 percent of global production of the precious metal and has cost Lonmin, Anglo American Platinum and Impala Platinum a combined 24 billion rand ($2.25 billion) in lost revenue. Industry and union officials said miners were streaming back to work and Reuters reporters saw thousands trudging to Marikana before sunrise on a cold winter's morning. A supervisor at the Marikana operations of London-listed Lonmin told Reuters it could be a week or more before any workers went back underground. |

Suarez, who plays for Liverpool in the English Premier League, became one of the online gambling company's brand ambassadors ahead of the World Cup last month. Suarez also has an endorsement deal with German sportswear company Adidas and one of its adverts feature a picture of Suarez baring his teeth. Adidas said it would respond to the latest controversy involving Suarez once FIFA had investigated it. |

In Iraq, former militia program eyed for new fight Posted: 25 Jun 2014 12:50 PM PDT BAGHDAD (AP) — They were known as the Sahwa, or the Awakening Councils — Sunni militiamen who took extraordinary risks to side with U.S. troops in the fight against al-Qaida during the Iraq War. Once heralded as a pivotal step in the defeat of the bloody insurgency, the Sahwa later were pushed aside by Iraq's Shiite-led government, starved of political support and money needed to remain a viable security force. |
Spying drop-off in Iraq preceded fresh insurgency Posted: 25 Jun 2014 04:06 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — CIA officers in Iraq have been largely hunkered down in their heavily fortified Baghdad compound since U.S. troops left the country in 2011, current and former officials say, allowing a once-rich network of intelligence sources to wither. |

Beyond cure? Europe euthanasia rulings sear debate Posted: 25 Jun 2014 02:02 PM PDT PARIS (AP) — One French court acquitted a doctor of poisoning seven terminally ill patients while another ordered physicians to suspend treatment for a comatose man, while Britain's top court said the country's ban on assisted suicide may be incompatible with human rights. The decisions of the past few days are fueling the arguments of Europeans who say the duty of doctors is to end the suffering of those beyond treatment. |
