White House concedes Russia meddled in campaign, but denies it changed the result Posted: 22 Jun 2017 01:10 PM PDT The White House Thursday addressed the joint intelligence report that found Russia had attempted to interfere with the 2016 presidential election, more than five months after the report's conclusions were made public. First, on Twitter, President Trump dismissed the concerns about Russia as a "big Dem HOAX" and suggested that his predecessor, President Barack Obama, did little to confront the problem. White House aides then clarified Trump's remarks and said he believes there was Russian meddling but is certain it did not affect the outcome of the race. |

Four GOP senators: We won’t vote for new health care bill Posted: 22 Jun 2017 12:21 PM PDT In a potentially game-changing move, four conservative senators quickly announced Thursday afternoon that they oppose the health care bill rolled out by Republican Senate leadership earlier in the day. Ted Cruz, R-Texas and Ron Johnson, R-Wis. said in a statement that the proposal did not go far enough to overhaul the current system. "There are provisions in this draft that represent an improvement to our current health care system, but it does not appear that this draft as written will accomplish the most important promise that we made to the Americans: to repeal Obamacare and lower their health care costs," the group said in the release. |

Crash that killed teenage siblings so horrific emergency responder went into cardiac arrest Posted: 23 Jun 2017 08:03 AM PDT An emergency response volunteer went into cardiac arrest while helping to remove bodies from the scene of a "horrific" car accident in which two teenage siblings and a 70-year-old man were killed. Eric Neibaur, 15, and his 13-year-old sister Lauren Neibaur died when their pick-up truck collided with Jay Lanningham's vehicle on a major road in the US state of Idaho. Police said a member of the local search and rescue unit had to be revived with a portable defibrillator after his heart stopped at the scene of the crash, reported the Idaho State Journal. |
Pew U.S. survey finds agreement on some gun-control proposals Posted: 22 Jun 2017 09:49 AM PDT The survey of 3,930 U.S. adults, including 1,269 gun owners, in March and April, provided a snapshot of American views on guns and gun policies as the nation grapples with gun violence. Some advocates called for a renewed push for gun control measures, as the Republican-controlled Congress has sought to relax existing gun laws. |

China's Xi visit to Hong Kong confirmed: report Posted: 22 Jun 2017 11:10 PM PDT President Xi Jinping will come to Hong Kong next week to mark 20 years since the city was handed back to China by Britain, local media said, in a visit that will be incendiary to activists. Although widely expected, officials have not so far said whether Xi will make the trip, his first to Hong Kong since becoming president in 2013. The South China Morning Post reported for the first time Friday that Xi's visit had been "confirmed", citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the visit. |

Second mistrial declared in killing of black man by ex-Cincinnati cop Posted: 23 Jun 2017 01:12 PM PDT For the second time, a mistrial was declared in the murder trial of a white former University of Cincinnati police officer who fatally shot a black motorist during a traffic stop. Officer Ray Tensing shot once, hitting 43-year-old Samuel DuBose in the head after stopping him for a missing front license plate on his car in July 2015, a body camera worn by Tensing showed. A mistrial was declared last November after jurors could not agree on a verdict. |
Posted: 23 Jun 2017 12:57 AM PDT The American Meteorological Society has told Rick Perry he lacks a 'fundamental understanding' of science after the US Energy Secretary claimed carbon dioxide was not a primary cause of climate change. The former governor of Texas told CNBC TV that "the most likely the primary control knob [for climate change] is the ocean waters and this environment that we live in", rather than greenhouse gas emissions produced by human activity. Becoming the latest of Donald Trump's administration to dispute established science without any attempt at reasoned argument, Mr Perry also said it was "quite all right" to be a sceptic about climate change, suggesting the trait was one held by any "wise, intellectually engaged person". |
Female Japan politician resigns after attacking male aide Posted: 23 Jun 2017 02:12 AM PDT Mayuko Toyota, a 42-year-old Harvard graduate and up-and-coming member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), can be heard screaming at the unnamed aide, saying he should die as she mocked his thinning hair. "Don't damage my reputation anymore," Toyota screams, apparently in response to a mistake she claims the man had made. Major Japanese media, including public broadcaster NHK, named Toyota as the woman heard on the tape. |
Stephen Hawking: Humans Should Ride a Beam of Light to Other Planets Posted: 22 Jun 2017 06:25 AM PDT Humanity should focus its efforts on exploring other worlds that we might inhabit, and to get there, Earthlings may need to ride on a beam of light, famed physicist Stephen Hawking says. The human imagination has led us to peer ever deeper into the universe with scientific tools, Hawking said. The answer is, no," Hawking said in his address. |

Arab states issue ultimatum to Qatar: close Jazeera, curb ties with Iran Posted: 23 Jun 2017 03:13 PM PDT By William Maclean, Rania El Gamal and Tom Finn DUBAI/DOHA (Reuters) - Four Arab states that imposed a boycott on Qatar have issued an ultimatum to Doha to close Al Jazeera television, curb ties with Iran, shut a Turkish base and pay reparations, demands so far reaching it would appear to be hard for Doha to comply. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have sent a 13-point list of demands apparently aimed at dismantling their tiny but wealthy neighbor's two-decade-old interventionist foreign policy which has incensed them. A Qatari government spokesman said Doha was reviewing the list of demands and that a formal response would be made by the foreign ministry and delivered to Kuwait, but added that the demands were not reasonable or actionable. |

5 Things to Consider When Deciding to Retire Posted: 22 Jun 2017 04:31 AM PDT While there is not necessarily an easy answer to the question, fully understanding the opportunities and challenges faced in retirement is a critical first step in helping to decide to retire at 55, 65, or beyond. The first and probably the most critical step in determining when to retire is to estimate how much income you will need, and how much income you will have in retirement. Take a look at potential retirement income sources including Social Security benefits. |
Removing Assad no longer priority in Syria: Macron Posted: 22 Jun 2017 03:01 AM PDT France no longer sees the departure of President Bashar al-Assad as a priority in the Syrian conflict, President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday, making the policy official for the first time. The new French leader said instead that fighting jihadists such as the Islamic State group had to be the international community's number one goal in a conflict that grew out of protests against the Syrian president in 2011 but has since become increasingly complex and multifaceted. "The real change I've made on this question, is that I haven't said the deposing of Bashar al-Assad is a prerequisite for everything," Macron said in an interview with several European newspapers, including Britain's Guardian, Spain's El Pais and Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung. |

The report added Rolando will reiterate at a hearing on July 31 that he is innocent and has never hidden any income from the taxman or committed any tax fraud in Spain. It is unclear at this time who gave the order, but reports indicate that an Associated Press cameraman was prevented from filming Mr Kushner's arrival at the office of Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu. Another cameraman was told to delete the memory card in his camera, which reportedly contained images of Mr Kushner's arrival and from Mr Netanyahu's office. |

Thousands of villagers poured onto the streets for the funeral, chanting slogans against Indian rule and pelting stones at soldiers who responded with bullets and pellet fire, a police officer said. S. P. Vaid, director general of police for the territory, confirmed a protester was killed in the exchange. |

Israeli court stands up for woman in airline gender seat swap case Posted: 22 Jun 2017 04:49 AM PDT A court has told the Israeli airline El Al that it can no longer ask women passengers to switch seats if ultra-Orthodox Jewish men object to sitting next to them, an Israeli advocacy group said on Thursday. A case for damages from the carrier was brought by 83-year-old Renee Rabinowitz, who was asked by a flight attendant, after boarding a flight from Newark to Tel Aviv in 2015, if she would agree to move. The airline has said it tries to accommodate ultra-Orthodox men, who cite religious beliefs in seeking to avoid close proximity to women other than their wives, but never pressures female passengers to accede to a seat swap request. |
New photos show us what the final Model 3 design will probably look like Posted: 22 Jun 2017 01:31 PM PDT Tesla's final Model 3 unveiling is set to take place next month, but an enterprising Redditor happened to spot a Model 3 charging at a Supercharger station in California and managed to take the most detailed and instructive photos we've seen yet. Whereas most of the Model 3 photos we've seen in recent weeks have been taken of a Model 3 in motion, the most recent crop of Model 3 photos were carefully taken while the car was sitting still. What's more, the Tesla employee driving the car reportedly told the Redditor that the Model 3 design is "pretty much" final at this point. While this is admittedly a second-hand blurb, it stands to reason that this is indeed accurate given that July is right around the corner.
So without further ado, featured below are a series of photos which provide us with our crispest look yet at what the shipping version of the Model 3 is actually going to look like. The front-on view is essentially similar to what we've seen from the beginning, with the Model 3 below in the center and flanked by two Model S vehicles. And now a side view for good measure. A shot of the Model 3 from the rear. A close-up shot of the interior gives us our first solid look at what the final steering wheel design may look like. Alas, this is a far cry from the spaceship style design Elon Musk promised on Twitter many months back. https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/716729420078133248 Moving along, this shot of the interior showcases an elegant wood trim, in line with other Model 3 spy shots we've seen over the past few weeks. Note that the display on the Model 3 is 15-inches and a tad smaller than the display that comes standard on both the Model S and the Model X. Not much too see here, just a Model 3 getting some juice. And last but not least, pictured below is a Model 3 with a decidedly unorthodox rims. Pictures aside, we also have a pretty firm grasp on what type of specs the Model 3 will bring to the table. According to an official product sheet from Tesla that was released not too long ago, the entry level Model 3 will have a 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds and a minimum range of 215 miles on a single charge. |

Boeing plant where Donald Trump vowed to create jobs fires almost 200 people Posted: 23 Jun 2017 07:42 AM PDT The South Carolina Boeing plant where President Donald Trump spoke about saving American jobs is laying off almost 200 workers, the company says. Boeing's South Carolina assembly plant has notified employees that they will be off the company's payrolls from 25 August, company spokeswoman Lori Guntr told The Independent. The layoffs are part of a larger effort to cut costs at Boeing, where intense competition with rival manufacturer Airbus has forced the company to lower prices and make savings. |
