Kerry warns Assad of 'repercussions' over truce violations Posted: 03 May 2016 04:41 PM PDT US Secretary of State John Kerry warned Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday of "repercussions" if his regime flouts a new ceasefire being negotiated with Moscow for the battered city of Aleppo. A February 27 truce between the Syrian regime and non-jihadist rebels raised hopes for efforts to resolve the five-year conflict. "If Assad does not adhere to this, there will clearly be repercussions and one of them may be the total destruction of the ceasefire and they go back to war," Kerry told reporters. |

"There's a whole thing, and, you know, his father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald's being – uh, you know shot. During a news conference later Thursday, Cruz dismissed Trump's allegations concerning Kennedy's death in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. |
A confident Trump looks past Indiana Posted: 03 May 2016 04:58 AM PDT CARMEL, Ind.—Indiana was supposed to be the state that could potentially derail Donald Trump's insurgent bid for the Republican presidential nomination. Speaking to a capacity crowd of nearly 1,800 people, Trump, with his characteristic bravado, touted his six straight primary wins — and predicted he would easily claim yet another, pointing to polls that show him with a wide lead in Indiana heading into Tuesday's vote. "Boom, boom, boom — we're knocking them out like corn flakes," Trump declared. |
Hillary Clinton says she misspoke when she vowed to put ‘coal companies out of business’ Posted: 03 May 2016 07:08 AM PDT Campaigning in coal country, Hillary Clinton said that she's sorry for vowing earlier this year to put coal miners out of business. IS kills US Navy SEAL in Iraq attack Posted: 03 May 2016 11:32 AM PDT The Islamic State group broke through Kurdish defences in northern Iraq on Tuesday and killed a US Navy SEAL deployed as part of the US-led coalition against the jihadists. The attack came as the United Nations said that fighting with IS in northern Iraq could displace another 30,000 people, adding to millions who have already fled their homes. The sailor from the special operations force was at least the third coalition member killed by enemy fire in Iraq since IS overran swathes of the country in 2014. |
U.S. researchers may have found Captain Cook's ship Endeavour Posted: 03 May 2016 09:16 AM PDT By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - U.S. researchers are set to announce on Wednesday that they have found what they believe are the remains of famed 18th century British sailor Captain James Cook's ship the Endeavour in Rhode Island's Newport Harbor. The historic ship is thought to be among 13 vessels scuttled in Newport Harbor during the American Revolutionary War against Britain, according to researchers at the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project. The researchers said they are at least 80 percent certain that Cook's ship is among the underwater wreckage situated in the harbor. |

Astronomers discover new Earth-like planets Posted: 02 May 2016 09:54 AM PDT Three planets with sizes and temperatures akin to those of the Earth and Venus are circling a dwarf star 40 light-years away. The star in question, named TRAPPIST-1 after the telescope used to observe it, is weaker and cooler than the Sun at the heart of our solar system. "With such short orbital periods, the planets are between 20 and 100 times closer to their star than the Earth to the Sun. The structure of this planetary system is much more similar in scale to the system of Jupiter's moons than to that of the solar system," said lead astronomer Michaël Gillon of the University of Liège in Belgium. |
Obama takes Supreme Court fight to Republican senators' home turf Posted: 02 May 2016 05:03 PM PDT By Roberta Rampton WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday took the political battle over his pick for a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court to the home states of seven Republican senators up for re-election in November. Obama conducted interviews with local television anchors where he argued that Republican senators should hold confirmation hearings and vote on his nomination of appellate Judge Merrick Garland to the top court. "What my argument is: Let the American people see Judge Garland, let him answer questions, let them hear his responses," the Democratic president told WDAF-TV FOX 4 in Kansas City, Missouri, a market that straddles states where Senators Roy Blunt of Missouri and Jerry Moran of Kansas are up for re-election. |

Emotional return as first U.S. cruise in decades reaches Cuba Posted: 02 May 2016 04:21 PM PDT By Marc Frank HAVANA (Reuters) - Hundreds of tourists and a handful of emotional Cuban-Americans arrived on the first U.S. cruise ship to sail to Havana in decades on Monday, spilling onto the cobbled streets of the old city where they were warmly greeted by residents. It was another first for the two countries since U.S. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced a historic rapprochement in December 2014, and comes weeks after Obama's visit to the Caribbean island. Carnival Corp's Adonia, a small ship carrying 700 passengers, slipped through the channel into Havana Bay in the morning under picture-perfect skies, then docked alongside the colonial quarter recently visited by Obama. "I'm nervous and excited at the same time, I left Cuba 48 years ago, when I was six years old. |
