Democrats Express Outrage As GOP Tax Cuts Inch Closer To Completion Posted: 19 Dec 2017 11:36 PM PST Democrats were quick to react after the Senate voted along party lines to pass a sweeping overhaul of the U.S. tax code. The unpopular piece of legislation overwhelmingly favors big business and the wealthiest of Americans and adds a whopping $1.4 trillion to the national debt. Ahead of the vote, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called the Tax Cut and Reform Bill "a disgrace" on the Senate floor. "The bill that the Republicans jammed through the Senate tonight isn't tax reform," Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said. |

U.S. FDA approves new diabetes drug from Merck and Pfizer Posted: 20 Dec 2017 01:43 PM PST (Reuters) - A new drug developed by Merck & Co and Pfizer Inc won U.S. approval on Wednesday to treat type II diabetes, the Food and Drug Administration said, adding another competitor to a growing class of treatments. The oral drug, known generically as ertugliflozin, will be sold under the brand name Steglatro and compete with AstraZeneca Plc's Farxiga, Johnson & Johnson's Invokana and Eli Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim's Jardiance. Merck and Pfizer won approval for Steglatro as a single therapy and in fixed-dose combinations with Merck's diabetes drug Januvia or with metformin, an older generic treatment typically given to newly diagnosed patients. |

Here's How Much The House Has Paid In Recent Sexual Harassment Settlements Posted: 19 Dec 2017 08:48 AM PST WASHINGTON ― Lawmakers in the House issued more than $100,000 in taxpayer-funded settlements to address sexual harassment claims from 2008 to 2012, according to new data released Tuesday. The Office of Compliance, where lawmakers and staffers file such claims, provided the numbers to the Committee on House Administration, which deals with the chamber's rules and regulations, amid a recent cascade of sexual misconduct allegations against lawmakers that has forced congressional leaders to re-examine procedures for dealing with such incidents. According to the data, there were at least three settlements related to sexual harassment claims involving unnamed House members' offices from 2008 to 2012, totaling $115,000. |

China aims for emission trading scheme in big step vs. global warming Posted: 19 Dec 2017 02:18 AM PST By Muyu Xu and Josephine Mason BEIJING (Reuters) - China said on Tuesday the first phase of its long-awaited nationwide carbon emission trading scheme (ETS) will focus on the power sector, as the government outlined details of what is expected to be the world's largest such program. The State Council approved the scheme last week and the National Development & Reform Commission (NDRC) outlined some details of how it will be implemented, marking its launch, NDRC vice chairman Zhang Yong said at a briefing. Trading will be based in Shanghai, involving 1,700 power companies and over 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, he said. |

US lifts ban on deadly virus experiments despite security risks Posted: 20 Dec 2017 09:16 AM PST The US government has lifted a three-year ban on funding the development of three deadly viruses. Lifting the ban will help scientists "develop strategies and effective countermeasures against rapidly evolving pathogens that pose a threat to public health," National Institutes of Health's Director Francis Collins said during the announcement. Development of three viruses - influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars), and Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers) - will begin shortly. |
US confirms punitive tariffs of nearly 300% on Bombardier planes Posted: 20 Dec 2017 02:11 PM PST The US Commerce Department on Wednesday confirmed its decision to impose punitive tariffs of nearly 300 percent on airplanes manufactured by Canada's Bombardier in a trade dispute that has inflamed relations with Ottawa. The ruling affirms a preliminary finding that Bombardier received unfair subsidies from the Canadian government that allowed it to sell planes at below the cost of production, and compete unfairly with American aerospace giant Boeing, which lodged the complaint. Boeing filed the case against its Canadian rival after Delta Air Lines ordered 75 of the C-Series planes that can seat 100-150 passengers. |

California wildfire fight aided by better weather Posted: 18 Dec 2017 07:00 PM PST By Steve Gorman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Thousands of weary firefighters, battling a deadly 2-week-old California wildfire that ranks as the third largest in state history, welcomed a second straight day of favorable weather on Monday that allowed a more aggressive attack on the flames. The so-called Thomas fire has scorched 271,000 acres (110,000 hectares) of drought-parched chaparral and brush in the coastal mountains, foothills and canyons of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties northwest of Los Angeles. More than 1,000 homes and other buildings have gone up in flames and some 18,000 other structures remained threatened from a late-season firestorm that kept firefighters on the defensive for the better part of two weeks. |

German ban on Islamist group True Religion confirmed as complaints dropped Posted: 19 Dec 2017 06:07 AM PST German federal prosecutors on Tuesday finalised their ban on an Islamist association accused of radicalizing youngsters, saying that complaints about the ban from two members of the group had been withdrawn. Last year, the interior ministry banned the Islamist group "True Religion," saying it had persuaded about 140 people to join militants in Iraq and Syria. The federal prosecutor said that since the association itself had not complained about the ban and the two members' complaints had been withdrawn, the prohibition ruling was final. |

South Korea says delay in military drills aimed only at ensuring peaceful Olympics Posted: 20 Dec 2017 05:21 AM PST By Josh Smith SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean officials said on Wednesday a proposed delay in military drills with the United States was aimed at ensuring a peaceful 2018 Winter Olympics, not ending the North Korean missile crisis, as relations with China suffered new setbacks. South Korean President Moon Jae-in is seeking to soothe relations with North Korea, which is pursuing nuclear and missile programmes in defiance of U.N. sanctions, and with China, the North's lone major ally, before the Games begin in South Korea in February. China, which hosted years of on-again-off-again six-party talks to try to end the North Korea standoff, resumed some blocks on group tours to South Korea, industry sources said, and rebuked Seoul for firing warning shots at Chinese fishing boats On Tuesday, Moon, who visited China last week, said he had proposed postponing major military drills with the United States until after the Games, a move his office said was designed to reassure athletes and spectators. |

The call came nearly a month after the two clashed over Trump's tweets of "Britain First" anti-Muslim propaganda and hours after London took the unusual step of voting against Washington at the United Nations. Britain was among 14 UN Security Council members who backed a resolution condemning Trump's decision to unilaterally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, leaving the United States alone to veto. |
