Clinton faces early test on trade deal fight Posted: 17 Apr 2015 03:07 PM PDT Less than a week after formally launching her presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton is already being tested on a thorny issue for Democrats: free-trade deals and their impact on workers. On Thursday, the debate rose to a full boil when members of Congress from both parties announced legislation that would give President Barack Obama the "fast-track" trade negotiating authority he needs to complete a massive Asia-Pacific free-trade deal. Over two days of campaigning in Iowa this week, where she discussed economics, Clinton, who is the commanding front-runner to be the Democratic nominee for the 2016 election, uttered not a word about the potential Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) between the United States and 11 other Pacific Rim countries. |

One dead, five wounded in car bombing near U.S. consulate in Iraq Posted: 17 Apr 2015 02:32 PM PDT By Isabel Coles ERBIL (Reuters) - A car bombing claimed by the Islamic State killed three people on Friday outside the U.S. consulate in Erbil, in a relatively rare attack in the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region. No U.S. personnel were hurt in the blast, according to the U.S. State Department, which said a "vehicle-borne improvised explosive device" exploded right outside the entrance to the heavily fortified compound. Iraq's Kurdish region is an important partner for the U.S.-led coalition in its campaign to "degrade and destroy" the Islamic State group, which overran large parts of Iraq last summer and threatened to reach Erbil. |

German president: Germanwings crash an 'unbelievable horror' Posted: 17 Apr 2015 05:41 AM PDT COLOGNE, Germany (AP) — The Germanwings crash last month was an "unbelievable horror" for the families of those killed, compounded by the apparent senselessness of the co-pilot's actions in bringing down the plane, German President Joachim Gauck told hundreds of victims' relatives and dignitaries at a memorial service Friday. |
No verdict yet in case of missing New York boy Posted: 17 Apr 2015 02:30 PM PDT By Natasja Sheriff NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jurors in the murder trial of a man who confessed to strangling 6-year-old Etan Patz in 1979 ended deliberations on Friday without reaching a verdict in the case, one of the first to highlight the plight of missing and abducted children. During the third day of deliberations in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, the panel asked to examine a missing-child poster featuring the boy, which had been introduced as evidence. The suspect, Pedro Hernandez, 54, a former Manhattan deli worker, had written on the poster: "I am sorry (and) choke him." The jury was due to resume deliberations at 9:45 a.m. (1345 GMT) on Monday. It inspired a national campaign to put the photographs of missing children on milk cartons to raise public awareness and solicit tips to locate them. |
Boston officials lay out security plans for marathon Posted: 17 Apr 2015 10:27 AM PDT By Elizabeth Barber BOSTON (Reuters) - Boston officials outlined a safety plan on Friday for the 2015 Boston Marathon that would protect runners and spectators while maintaining an upbeat mood two years after an attack at the event killed three people and wounded many others. Police will limit the crowds near the finish line on Boylston Street, where a pair of ethnic Chechen brothers set off twin pressure-cooker bombs that injured 264 people and set the stage for the most chaotic week in Boston's living memory. "The city will be the same positive environment that people are used to enjoying during the marathon," said Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, describing the impending event on Monday as a "safe and joyful day for everyone." More than 100 cameras will oversee the route through eastern Massachusetts, from a suburb of Hopkinton to downtown Boston, with 50 observation points near the finish line, said Police Commissioner William Evans, adding: "Don't leave backpacks laying around." Emergency medical services for the race will include two large medical tents near the finish line, 14 ambulances and a 30-bed ambulance bus parked in a downtown Boston park. |
Police say Phoenix gunman 'snapped,' killed four, then himself Posted: 17 Apr 2015 02:21 PM PDT By David Schwartz PHOENIX (Reuters) - A man apparently upset over a family business dispute "snapped" before fatally shooting his two brothers, his mother and his sister-in-law and then killing himself at a home in Phoenix, police said on Friday. The shooter was found by police in an upstairs bedroom with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after Thursday's incident, said Sergeant Trent Crump, a Phoenix police spokesman. Crump said witnesses described how one of the brothers "snaps or loses it." He said the man apparently killed his brothers with a semi-automatic handgun downstairs, then shot and killed his mother when she arrived at the house to see what was happening. He then went upstairs and fatally shot his sister-in-law before turning the gun on himself, investigators said. |

Paralyzed Olympic champion's 'amazing' road to recovery Posted: 16 Apr 2015 02:33 PM PDT You may remember swimmer Amy Van Dyken-Rouen from the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics, where she won six gold medals collectively. However, the biggest challenge of Van Dyken-Rouen's life hasn't been in a swimming pool. Just 10 months ago, her spinal cord was severed in an all-terrain vehicle accident, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her amazingly positive attitude and a team of dedicated doctors have put her on the road to recovery, with major progress toward her dream of walking again. |
