Malala to return to Pakistan after finishing her studies in Britain Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:02 AM PDT Malala Yousafzai, the women's education activist and youngest ever Nobel Prize Winner, said yesterday that she plans to return permanently to Pakistan after finishing her studies in Britain. Ms Yousafzai, who is known across the world simply as 'Malala', was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012 while she was campaigning for female education in the Swat Valley. In her first visit to the country since the attack, she yesterday told Pakistani media that she plans to return to the country in two years - after finishing her course in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University. "My plan is to return to Pakistan as this is my country," she said. "The Pakistani government and military have helped me in visiting my home country. I will return to Pakistan permanently after completing my education." She described herself as "completely focusing on education" at Oxford, but said that she wanted "to work for the education of children and make it possible for every girl in Pakistan to receive a high-level education, to fulfil her dreams and become a part of society". It was there, in 2012, that a Taliban gunman singled her out on the bus she rode to school, and shot her in the head. Yesterday Ms Yousafzai, now 20, acknowledged the work of the Pakistani military in saving her life. "My treatment here was by Army doctors, and if they had not done my surgery in time I would not be here today," she said. After leaving Pakistan, she founded her own not-for-profit educational fund, the Malala Fund. She continued to write and campaign, and in 2013 co-authored her biography, I Am Malala. In 2014, she became the youngest-ever recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize Sources close to Ms Yousafzai's family yesterday told The Daily Telegraph that she had discussed with them her plans to move back to Pakistan, but had not yet decided what she would do upon her return. She told the media that she had missed "everything about Pakistan" while she had been studying in Britain. "Right from the rivers, the mountains, to even the dirty streets and the garbage around our house, and my friends and how we used to have gossip and talk about our school life, to how we used to fight with our neighbours," she said. A student who also attends Ms Yousafzai's Oxford college, Lady Margaret Hall, said yesterday that while studying she had plain clothes security detail with her at all times. Before beginning her degree at Oxford, she studied at Edgbaston High School for Girls in Birmingham. While many in Pakistan welcomed her return, others were more critical of her reforming stance and accused her of promoting her own, non-Islamic, values. A group of private schools in Pakistan declared Friday to be "I Am Not Malala Day", for what its spokesman described as her "anti-Islam and anti-Pakistan ideology". Responding to her critics, she said: "I am proud of my religion, and I am proud of my country." "I just don't know anything I've said that makes me anti-Pakistan or anti-Islam." |

South Korean musicians arrive in Pyongyang for concerts Posted: 31 Mar 2018 01:53 AM PDT K-pop stars led a group of South Korean musicians arriving in Pyongyang Saturday to take part in the latest set of cross-border cultural performances ahead of next month's rare inter-Korean summit. The 120-member group including top girlband Red Velvet flew from Seoul's Gimpo airport aboard a chartered civilian flight to Pyongyang via the rarely used direct air route between the two Koreas, as a rapprochement on the peninsula gathers pace. "This performance in Pyongyang will add momentum to inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation that resumed with the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics" in the South, said Culture Minister Do Jong-hwan, who led the group. |

Trump supporter Malloch says he will testify to Mueller grand jury Posted: 30 Mar 2018 04:50 PM PDT By Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An American academic who supports U.S. President Donald Trump and is a strong advocate of Britain's exit from the European Union will testify next month before the federal grand jury considering evidence in the investigation into possible collusion between Trump's 2016 election campaign and Russia. Theodore Malloch, the author of a forthcoming pro-Trump book and an ally of Nigel Farage, a former leader of Britain's UK Independence Party, said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Friday by the book's publisher that he was questioned by FBI agents when he landed at Boston's Logan International Airport on Tuesday after a flight from London and served with a subpoena to appear before the grand jury. |
Syrians quit Ghouta as talks for last pocket stutter Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:05 PM PDT Hundreds more Syrian rebels and civilians prepared Friday to leave Eastern Ghouta under a negotiated withdrawal, as Russia unilaterally announced a similar deal to empty the final pocket of the battered enclave. The former rebel bastion on the outskirts of Damascus has been drained by a nearly six-week Syrian government assault and two evacuation deals brokered by regime ally Moscow. Under such agreements, rebels agree to hand over territory in exchange for safe passage for them and civilians to opposition-held northwest Syria. |

Russian accused of massive U.S. hacking is extradited, pleads not guilty Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:14 PM PDT PRAGUE/NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Russian man on Friday pleaded not guilty to charges he hacked three U.S. technology companies, potentially compromising personal details of more than 100 million users, including on LinkedIn, after being extradited from the Czech Republic. Yevgeniy Nikulin, 30, of Moscow, entered his plea in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco, after having fought his extradition following his 2016 arrest in Prague. |
Trump freezes Syria recovery funds: report Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:21 PM PDT The White House has instructed the State Department to freeze over $200 million in funds earmarked for "recovery efforts" in Syria, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday. The report -- which came a day after Trump declared in a speech that the US would be quitting Syria "very soon" -- is another indication the president wants to disengage from the country. Officials told AFP that Trump's aside in his speech was not a slip, but that for several weeks he had been pushing back against the idea of a long or medium term US commitment to stabilizing eastern Syria. |

America Must Drop Its Delusions about Dealing with Russia Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:27 AM PDT For too long, the U.S. national-security community has oscillated in its assessment of the Russian Federation, swinging between viewing Moscow as the country's number one geopolitical threat to dismissing the challenge of a nation whose per capita GDP equals that of Portugal. This has led to the worst of all satisficing comprises: an approach that views Russia as a competitor and adversary, but which does not require a great deal of investment, because the unstoppable Russian threat of today will evaporate when Russia inevitably collapses under the weight of its economic, political and demographic contradictions. |

France could bolster Syria role in fight against Islamic State: source Posted: 30 Mar 2018 04:40 AM PDT By Marine Pennetier and John Irish PARIS (Reuters) - France could increase its military presence to help a U.S.-led coalition fighting Islamic State in Syria and warned that a Turkish advance on a town controlled by Kurdish-backed militias would be "unacceptable", a presidential source said on Friday. President Emmanuel Macron has been criticised at home for his response to a Turkish operation against the YPG militia, with opponents saying he has abandoned the Kurds. The YPG militia makes up a large portion of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which have been at the forefront of the coalition's strategy to defeat the hard-line militants. |
Death toll on Gaza-Israel border rises to seven: ministry Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:48 AM PDT At least seven Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces on Friday, Gaza's health ministry said, as bloody clashes flared along the enclave's border. Mahmoud Rahmi, 33, became the seventh person killed when he was shot near the frontier in one of the bloodiest days of Israeli-Palestinian clashes in years, according to the ministry. Three other protesters were shot dead, while a farmer died when he was hit by a tank shell, the health ministry said. |

Grief and rage at funeral for police shooting victim in Sacramento Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:54 PM PDT Hundreds of mourners joined an outpouring of grief and rage Thursday at the funeral of an unarmed black man shot dead by police in California's capital Sacramento. The service, where civil rights activist Al Sharpton delivered an angry, rousing speech, became a rallying point for people demanding justice in the face of police violence against African Americans. Body camera and surveillance helicopter footage released last week showed police chasing and then firing 20 rounds at 22-year-old Stephon Clark, fearing that he was carrying a weapon. |

Trump critic hopes to become the first Native American woman in Congress Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:34 PM PDT Donald Trump has come under fire for his track record with the Native American population on more than one occasion. The US president frequently uses the racial slur "Pocahontas" in relation to Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren, and has made a number of policy decisions which will destroy sacred Native American land. The Trump administration's budget also proposes sweeping cuts to job training programmes which directly help Native Americans into work. |
