City probe finds Washington state ex-NAACP official violated ethics rules Posted: 17 Jun 2015 02:22 PM PDT Former Washington state NAACP leader Rachel Dolezal, who drew national attention after being accused of lying about her racial background, has violated ethics rules while heading a police oversight commission, a senior city official said on Wednesday. Investigators hired by the city of Spokane to probe a whistleblower complaint found Dolezal had publicly named citizens who made complaints against police officers, in violation of confidentiality rules, City Council President Ben Stuckart said. |

In California, Uber driver is employee, not contractor Posted: 17 Jun 2015 01:59 PM PDT A driver for Uber is an employee, not a contractor, according to a California ruling that eventually could push up costs for the smartphone-based ride hailing service and hurt the closely watched start-up's valuation. The California Labor Commission's decision could ripple through the burgeoning industry of providing services via smartphones, with potential implications for other "crowdsourced" services such as Uber rival Lyft, chore service TaskRabbit, and cleaning service Homejoy. The ruling - which Uber insisted applied to only one driver - was the latest in a series of legal and regulatory challenges facing the company and other highly valued start-ups in the United States and other countries. |
U.S. regulators compile Takata recall data from automakers Posted: 17 Jun 2015 03:13 PM PDT Automakers affected by the Takata air bag inflator recall have loaded the ID numbers of millions of recalled vehicles into a searchable system, allowing consumers and government officials to examine the data, U.S. safety regulators said on Wednesday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it will begin combing through the filings of 11 automakers to see how their Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) match with information provided earlier by Takata Corp . "We'll revise that number if necessary," NHTSA spokesman Gordon Trowbridge said. |
New York man attacks FBI agent in Islamic State-tied probe: U.S. Posted: 17 Jun 2015 01:53 PM PDT A New York City man was arrested on Wednesday after authorities said he tried to stab an FBI agent executing a search warrant in connection with an alleged plot to carry out an attack in support of the militant group Islamic State. Russia does not want arms race with US: Putin aide Posted: 17 Jun 2015 04:54 AM PDT Russia does not want to enter a costly new arms race with the United States, a top Kremlin aide said Wednesday, after President Vladimir Putin said it was boosting its nuclear arsenal. "Russia is trying to react to possible threats with some sort of means but that's it," Yury Ushakov, Putin's top foreign policy aide, told a briefing. "We are against any arms race because it naturally weakens our economic capabilities," Ushakov said. |
