Khashoggi murder: Pressure mounts on Saudi government and Trump four months after killing Posted: 08 Feb 2019 09:27 AM PST Pressure is mounting on Saudi authorities over the killing of Jamal Khashoggi and the case's aftermath this week as a deadline for action imposed on President Donald Trump by the US lawmakers last year passed without any response from the White House. A series of rapid-fire developments showed continuing outrage over the murder and dismemberment of The Washington Post columnist at the hands of Saudi spies and security officials dispatched to the Istanbul consulate more than four months ago. A deadline demanding a response on a US Global Magnitsky Act ruling calling for punishment of state human rights abuses came and went this week without a response from the White House on the culpability of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, who has strong ties to Mr Trump and his family. |

Look at this colossal storm on Uranus Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:56 AM PST Uranus, a huge gaseous world some 1.8 billion miles from the sun, is quite stormy. NASA's long-lived Hubble telescope spotted a notable storm churning inside the planet's blue-green atmosphere, and the space agency posted the image online Thursday. The entirety of Uranus' north pole is engulfed by a "vast bright stormy cloud cap," wrote NASA. "Scientists believe this new feature is a result of Uranus' unique rotation," added NASA, noting that, unlike the other planets in our solar system, Uranus is tipped on its side. This leaves the sun shining non-stop onto its north pole during its long summer, likely resulting in widespread atmospheric changes. Uranus as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. Image: nasa Just beneath the massive polar storm is a smaller, compact white cloud made of the common gas methane, notes NASA. The space agency also spotted a new storm brewing on Neptune. It's the dark spot near the top of the planet and is somewhat mysterious, as these massive dark storms have been observed appearing and then vanishing relatively quickly. SEE ALSO: Trump fails to block NASA's carbon sleuth from going to space "The feature is the fourth and latest mysterious dark vortex captured by Hubble since 1993," said NASA. Neptune as seen in November 2018. Image: nasa NASA plans to continue monitoring weather on these frigid, far-off gas giants to better understand the extraterrestrial storms. "Just as meteorologists cannot predict the weather on Earth by studying a few snapshots, astronomers cannot track atmospheric trends on solar system planets without regularly repeated observations," the space agency wrote. "Astronomers hope that Hubble's long-term monitoring of the outer planets will help them unravel the mysteries that still persist about these faraway worlds." Seven jailed for life over Tunisian museum, hotel massacres Posted: 09 Feb 2019 12:27 PM PST A Tunisian court jailed seven people for life on Saturday for their involvement in two deadly militant attacks in 2015, one on a museum in Tunis and the other on a hotel in a Mediterranean resort. Other defendants received jail sentences ranging from 16 years to six months, state news agency TAP quoted court spokesman Soufiane Sliti as saying. The assault on the Bardo National Museum left 21 people dead, while 38 were killed in the beach resort of Sousse, some 150 kilometers (90 miles) south of the capital. |

New Jersey’s Booker Offers Obama Echoes in Iowa Campaign Debut Posted: 08 Feb 2019 04:56 PM PST At three events in the state Friday, Booker at times echoed former President Barack Obama's campaign style and frequent references to civil rights leaders. New Jersey's first black senator has long been compared to Obama, who arrived in the Senate from Illinois in 2005 to immediate buzz about White House ambitions. |
Virginia governor vows to stay; calls mount to oust lieutenant governor Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:41 PM PST Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax issued a statement denying both allegations as a "coordinated smear campaign." He said the latest accusation, that he had raped a fellow student at Duke University in 2000, was "demonstrably false" and declared he would not step down. Fairfax, 39, insisted earlier this week that his encounter with a woman who has accused him of forcing himself on her sexually at a hotel in Boston 14 years ago was entirely consensual. The second in line to succeed Northam, Attorney General Mark Herring, 57, came under fire with his own admission this week that he, like Northam, had once darkened his face to imitate a black performer - a practice widely considered to be racist. |

Andromeda galaxy will deliver a 'glancing blow' to our Milky Way later than expected Posted: 09 Feb 2019 07:51 AM PST Astronomers have long suspected that the colossal Andromeda galaxy would, in billions years, collide with our humble Milky Way. The collision was forecast to happen in some 3.9 billion years. But after astronomers analyzed new data captured by the European Space Agency's star-surveying satellite Gaia, they now put the imminent date at 4.5 billion years — so 600 million years later than initially expected. The event, detailed in The Astrophysical Journal, is characterized as a "swipe" rather than a direct collision. The end result would be a merger of the galaxies into one, monstrous galaxy. "This finding is crucial to our understanding of how galaxies evolve and interact," Timo Prusti, ESA Gaia Project Scientist who had no role in the study, said in a statement. The Gaia satellite measured star motion in the Andromeda galaxy. Image: ESA/Gaia (star motions); NASA/Galex (background image); R. van der Marel, M. Fardal, J. Sahlmann (STScI) While of immense importance to our corner of the universe, this event will be of little importance to Earth: By then, our aging sun will have grown brighter and likely have boiled the oceans while burning away our protective atmosphere. To arrive at their conclusions about the future galactic meeting, scientists observed how stars moved within two "nearby" galaxies that are passing each other — the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies — to forecast how Andromeda will ultimately travel through intergalactic space. SEE ALSO: Pancakes in space? No that's just the mysterious MU69 "We combed through the Gaia data to identify thousands of individual stars in both galaxies, and studied how these stars moved within their galactic homes," said study coauthor Mark Fardal in a statement. "While Gaia primarily aims to study the Milky Way, it's powerful enough to spot especially massive and bright stars within nearby star-forming regions – even in galaxies beyond our own." Galactic trajectories. Image: E. Patel, G. Besla (University of Arizona), R. van der Marel (STScI) When Andromeda does eventually meet, or "swipe," the Milky Way, it doesn't mean chaos and destruction will ensue. "That event will be less dramatic than it sounds, however," noted The New Times cosmos reporter Dennis Overbye. "Because galaxies are mostly empty space, they will pass through each other like ghosts." WATCH: Ever wonder how the universe might end? |

US step closer to developing hypersonic missile that travels at five times the speed of sound Posted: 08 Feb 2019 01:53 PM PST The United States is racing to develop hypersonic missiles that can travel at five times the speed of sound, officials have confirmed. Heather Wilson, secretary of the US Air Force, said the effort was being made to keep pace with other nations like Russia and China while speaking on Friday at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. The US Air Force currently operates 80 satellites in space, the secretary added. |
Humbled Goldman Sachs still faces questions on 1MDB Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:15 PM PST Goldman Sachs's decision to potentially cut bonuses for top executives over the 1MDB scandal reflects an acknowledgement at shareholder and public outrage over the debacle. The prestigious investment bank announced last week that it could withhold millions of dollars in bonuses to former Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein and two other retired executives depending on the outcome of ongoing probes into the Malaysian fund. Beyond the bonuses, Goldman also said it could claw back compensation from current chief executive David Solomon and two other current senior executives, president John Waldron and chief financial officer Stephen Scherr. |

Khashoggi fiancée seeks change in U.S. approach to killing, may visit Posted: 08 Feb 2019 06:10 AM PST Khashoggi, a royal insider who became a critic of Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by a team of Saudi operatives on Oct. 2, provoking international revulsion. Trump has resisted efforts in the U.S. Congress to rebuke the Saudis, pointing to weapons sales as an important source of U.S. jobs. "I might visit America in March," Khashoggi's fiancée Hatice Cengiz told a news conference to mark the release of her book on Khashoggi. |

Border Patrol overwhelmed by large groups of migrant families Posted: 08 Feb 2019 12:13 PM PST U.S. Border Patrol said on Friday its resources were being stretched thin by larger and larger groups of Central American families left by smugglers in remote locations along the U.S. Mexico border. Until recently, most people caught crossing the border illegally were men from Mexico, but now Central American families and unaccompanied minors make up some 60 percent of those apprehended, data from the agency show. Many of the migrants who may seek passage with smugglers in their journey through Mexico cross the border and turn themselves into U.S. authorities to seek asylum in the United States, a drawn-out court process that can take months or years to resolve. |

Brazil evacuates towns near Vale, ArcelorMittal dams on fears of collapse Posted: 08 Feb 2019 05:58 AM PST The collapse two weeks ago unleashed an avalanche of mud that engulfed nearby buildings and farms, killing an estimated 300 people in Brazil's deadliest mining disaster. As evidence mounted that Vale missed warnings of trouble at the dam in the town of Brumadinho, pressure has risen on the firm and other mining companies to bolster safety measures to avoid a recurrence. ArcelorMittal shares dropped nearly 5 percent at 19.26 euros. |
Tata Motors shares plunge 30% on Jaguar woes Posted: 07 Feb 2019 11:12 PM PST Shares in India's Tata Motors tanked almost 30 percent on Friday after problems at its Jaguar Land Rover unit dragged the luxury carmaker to India's biggest quarterly loss. The Mumbai-based manufacturer has been badly hit by falling demand for luxury cars in China, as well as uncertainty over Brexit and rising debt. It announced Thursday a net loss of 270 billion rupees ($3.8 billion) for the quarter ending December owing to a $3.9-billion write-down on JLR. |

Ivanka Trump made the remarks during an interview with ABC News host Abby Huntsman in an interview for The View. "There were anonymous leaks about there being issues," Ms Trump said. |
Exclusive: U.S. in direct contact with Venezuelan military, urging defections - source Posted: 08 Feb 2019 08:36 PM PST The Trump administration expects further military defections from Maduro's side, the official told Reuters in an interview, despite only a few senior officers having done so since opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president last month, earning the recognition of the United States and dozens of other countries. "We're still having conversations with members of the former Maduro regime, with military members, although those conversations are very, very limited." The official declined to provide details on the discussions or the level at which they are being held, and it was unclear whether such contacts could create cracks in the Venezuelan socialist leader's support from the military, which is pivotal to his grip on power. With the Venezuelan military still apparently loyal to Maduro, a source in Washington close to the opposition expressed doubts whether the Trump administration has laid enough groundwork to spur a wider mutiny in the ranks where many officers are suspected of benefiting from corruption and drug trafficking. |

On Thursday, as promised in the teasers that Subaru published last week, the 2020 Legacy made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show with new tech and an updated collection of powertrain options. The model will be available in six trims - Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT -- all built on the Subaru Global Platform. |
