Russian warship ‘carrying £100 billion in gold’ discovered off South Korea Posted: 18 Jul 2018 12:34 AM PDT A South Korean salvage team has discovered the wreck of a Russian warship that was sunk in a naval battle 113 years ago and is believed to still contain a trove of gold bullion and coins worth 150 trillion won, or £100 billion. The Russian Imperial Navy cruiser Dmitrii Donskoi was discovered at a depth of more than 1,400 feet about one mile off the South Korean island of Ulleungdo. A joint team made up of experts from South Korea, Britain and Canada discovered the wreck on Sunday and used two manned submersibles to capture footage of the vessel, with the company behind the discovery promising to use a percentage of the money to fund the construction of a railway line linking Russia and South Korea through North Korea. The video includes images of extensive damage to the vessel caused in an encounter with Japanese warships in May 1905, along with cannons and deck guns encrusted with marine growth, the anchor and the ship's wheel. The identity of the 5,800-ton warship was confirmed when the crew of one of the submersibles were able to read the name on the stern. "The body of the ship was severely damaged by shelling, with its stern almost broken, and yet the ship's deck and sides are well preserved", the Seoul-based Shinil Group said in a statement. Launched in St Petersburg in August 1883, the Dmitrii Donskoi was designed as a commerce raider and fitted with both a full set of sails and a coal-fired engine. The ship spent most of its career operating in the Mediterranean and the Far East and was deployed to Imperial Russia's Second Pacific Squadron after the Japanese fleet destroyed the majority of Russia's naval power in the Far East in the opening salvoes of the 1904 Russo-Japanese War. The Dmitri Donskoii was sunk in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese war Credit: Shinil Group The squadron was intercepted by the Japanese fleet in May 1905 and decimated at the Battle of Tsushima. Assigned to protect the transport ships at the rear of the formation, the Dmitrii Donskoi managed to evade the attacking force, but was later intercepted steaming for the Russian port of Vladivostok. Haul: the Imperial Navy Cruiser Dmitri Donskoii sank more than a century ago with - it is thought - 5,500 boxes of gold bars and coins still on board Credit: Shinil Group Around 60 of the 591 crew were killed and further 120 injured before Captain Ivan Lebedev anchored off the island of Ulleungdo and ordered his men ashore. The following morning, May 29, 1905, the ship was scuttled offshore and the crew were taken prisoner by Japanese landing parties. Captain Lebedev later died of his wounds. There are reports that the Dmitrii Donskoi was carrying the fleet's funds and went down with 5,500 boxes containing gold bars as well as a separate haul of 200 tons of gold coins. The gold was being stored in the ship's holds to stop the Japanese seizing it. Shinil Group estimates the gold would have a total value today of £101.3 billion. Half of any treasure found on board will be handed over to the Russian government Credit: Donskoii The company says it is aiming to raise the ship in October or November. Half of any treasure found aboard the vessel would be handed over to the Russian government, the company said, while 10 percent of the remainder will be invested in tourism projects on Ulleungdo Island, including a museum dedicated to the vessel. A portion of the rest of the treasure will be donated to joint projects to promote development in north-east Asia, the company said, such as a railway line from Russia to South Korea through North Korea. |

Thai cave boys speak of 'miracle' rescue after hospital discharge Posted: 18 Jul 2018 06:51 AM PDT Twelve Thai boys and their football coach who were rescued by divers after being trapped in a flooded cave for over two weeks spoke publicly Wednesday of their incredible ordeal. Appearing at a press conference beamed worldwide, the "Wild Boars" team members appeared healthy and happy despite the nine days they spent in the dark before being found by an international rescue team and extracted days later. A packed crowd greeted the youngsters after they were discharged from hospital in Chiang Rai, and watched as they played with footballs on a small makeshift pitch before taking their seats. |

Obama speech to mark 100 years since Mandela's birth Posted: 16 Jul 2018 10:10 PM PDT Former US president Barack Obama will deliver a speech to a crowd of 15,000 people in South Africa on Tuesday as the centrepiece of celebrations marking 100 years since Nelson Mandela's birth. Obama has made relatively few public appearances since leaving the White House in 2017, but he has often credited Mandela for being one of the great inspirations in his life. Mandela, who died in 2013, remains a global icon for his long struggle against white-minority apartheid rule and for his message of peace and reconciliation after being freed following 27 years in prison. |

Thai cave boys to leave hospital, speak to media Posted: 17 Jul 2018 11:55 PM PDT Twelve boys and their football coach who survived a highly dangerous and dramatic rescue from a flooded cave in Thailand are preparing to leave hospital and speak to the media for the first time. The "Wild Boars" football team are being discharged a day earlier than announced, with authorities hoping a question and answer session will satisfy -- at least temporarily -- the intense media speculation that has accompanied their epic underground ordeal, before they head home later Wednesday. "The reason to hold this evening press conference is so media can ask them questions and after that they can go back to live their normal lives without media bothering them," Thailand's chief government spokesman Sunsern Kaewkumnerd told AFP. |

Trump says he holds Putin personally responsible for Russia's 2016 election meddling Posted: 18 Jul 2018 10:40 AM PDT Donald Trump has for the first time said he holds Russian leader Vladimir Putin personally responsible for Moscow's alleged efforts to interfere in the 2016 US election. Amid intense controversy following his summit in Helsinki with the Russian leader where he was accused of failing to press him over Moscow's attempts to interfere in the presidential race and undermining US intelligence, Mr Trump embarked on the latest in a series of attempts at damage limitation. Having said on Tuesday he had "misspoke" in Helsinki when he said he saw no reason Russia would have interfered in the election, on Wednesday in an interview the president said he did indeed agree with the conclusion of four US intelligence agencies that Moscow sought to influence the outcome of White House battle. |

Barack Obama says that 'men have been getting on my nerves lately' Posted: 18 Jul 2018 08:35 AM PDT Barack Obama has officially joined the countless women in 2018 who are annoyed by men. On Wednesday, while speaking to leaders of the Obama Foundation in Johannesburg, South Africa, President Obama got real about the recent behavior of powerful men, admitting he's straight-up annoyed. Extreme same. SEE ALSO: America's moms, Michelle Obama and Tina Lawson, dancing at Beyoncé concert will cleanse your soul "Women in particular, by the way, I want you to get more involved," Obama said in footage shared by CNN. "Because men have been getting on my nerves lately. Every day I read the newspaper, and I just think — brothers, what's wrong with you guys? What's wrong with us? I mean we're violent; we're bullying — you know, just not handling our business." "I think empowering more women on the continent— that right away is going to lead to some better policies," he continued. Obama voicing his disappointment in men, especially those making front-page headlines, comes after a particularly mortifying week for President Donald Trump. On Monday, Trump publicly supported Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at a joint press conference in Helsinki, Finland, and refused to acknowledge Russia's meddling in the 2016 election. He defended his own comments for a day, and then, after fielding an overwhelming amount of backlash, claimed that he misspoke, Obama also delivered a speech on Tuesday in honor of the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birth, in which he said that we're living in remarkably "strange and uncertain" times. In that lecture, the former president further touched upon the "head-spinning and disturbing headlines" in the world today, and made several other jokes at the expense of powerful men. As a woman, I'd just like to say with the utmost sincerity: Thanks, Obama. [H/T: The Daily Beast] WATCH: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No. It's an inflatable Trump baby flying around London |

An AFP journalist on one of the flights reported passengers singing and dancing in the aisles, overwhelming flight attendants, before falling into the arms of long-lost family members upon their arrival. |
