Black is back: top trends at Paris fashion week Posted: 03 Oct 2018 01:25 AM PDT Spring-summer is supposed to be about bright colours, prints and flouncy flowers. No longer if a deeply sombre Paris fashion week is any barometer. Hedi Slimane went on a voyage to the heart of black in his highly controversial debut at Celine, as did his successor at Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello. Blink at Valentino, Margiela, Guy Laroche, Givenchy and even Balenciaga and you might have thought yourself at a wake there was so much black, while Rick Owens summoned up the Salem witch-hunts, smoking pyre and all. |

Danske Bank says US probing money laundering claims Posted: 04 Oct 2018 02:12 AM PDT Danske Bank on Thursday said it was being investigated by the US Department of Justice over possible money laundering related to more than $200 billion transferred through the Danish lender's Estonian branch. At the centre of a financial scandal that has made headlines since last year, a Danske Bank internal probe was unable to determine exactly how much of the money that passed through the branch between 2007 and 2015 may have been laundered. "Danske Bank has also now received requests for information from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) in connection with a criminal investigation relating to the bank's Estonian branch conducted by the DOJ," the bank said. |

How Applying Early for College Affects Financial Aid Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:44 AM PDT Early decision applicants may enjoy improved odds of being accepted at their dream school, but that could come at the price of receiving less in college aid, experts say. Among schools with early decision policies, the average overall admissions rate was almost 48 percent in fall 2016 -- that's more than a 10 percentage point difference compared with early decision admissions. Under early decision, students commit to a first-choice college and, if admitted, agree to enroll and withdraw their other college applications. |
JPMorgan Cuts China Stocks on Risks of Full-Blown Trade War Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:14 PM PDT The trade conflict will only escalate as the U.S. maxes out tariffs on Chinese imports, the dollar strengthens and the yuan weakens further, JPMorgan strategists including Pedro Martins Junior, Rajiv Batra and Sanaya Tavaria wrote in a report, lowering their recommendation on China to neutral from overweight. With mainland markets shut all week for a holiday, the $4.9 billion iShares China Large-Cap ETF dropped to a two-week low in New York. |
U.S. Senate Republicans set Kavanaugh procedural vote for as early as Friday Posted: 03 Oct 2018 07:00 PM PDT McConnell, a Republican, filed a petition for a so-called cloture vote, which if successful would limit debate on the Kavanaugh nomination and start the clock ticking on a final 30-hour waiting period before the Senate could vote to confirm the nominee. After filing a cloture petition, lawmakers must wait one legislative day before proceeding to the cloture vote, according to Senate rules. |

The video shows Ms Trent, who is also white, saying to the other woman identified by BuzzFeed News as Linda Dwire, "get out of here, now! You leave these women alone! Get out! Go!," before threatening to call the police. Ms Dwire can be seen pointing her finger at Ms Trent and approached her and one of the women who had been speaking in Spanish to say Ms Trent "come[s] from a generation that's destroying this country". |

Merkel in Israel says Iran must not obtain nuclear arms Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:30 AM PDT German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged Thursday to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons but disagreed on how as they met to showcase cooperation between their countries. The one-day visit to Israel by Merkel and members of her cabinet was part of German-Israeli government consultations held regularly, but came after Netanyahu's harsh criticism of European countries over their efforts to keep alive the Iran nuclear deal. Germany and other European countries have also repeatedly hit out at Israeli settlement building in the occupied West Bank and warned over threats to remaining prospects for a two-state solution to the conflict with the Palestinians. |

Merkel and members of her cabinet will on Thursday participate in the latest in a series of bilateral talks between Germany and Israel. The visit comes after Netanyahu's harsh criticism of European countries over Iran, Israel's main enemy. |
Trump plans travel push to stave off 'blue wave' in House races Posted: 03 Oct 2018 09:36 AM PDT Trump's Republican Party is at risk of losing control of the House in the Nov. 6 midterm vote at a time when, historically, the party in control of the White House loses ground in Congress. Trump heads on Thursday to Minnesota where Republicans want to give a boost to two House candidates: one in an open race and another, a first-term incumbent, who is running in a Democratic-leaning district. If a "blue wave" sweeps Democrats into power in the House, they could stop Trump's legislative agenda and tie up the White House with investigations. |

Putin signs unpopular pension reform into law despite protests Posted: 03 Oct 2018 09:36 AM PDT Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday signed a deeply controversial bill to raise the state pension age for the first time since the Soviet era, the Kremlin said. The bill, which has sparked rare street protests, only needed Putin's approval to become law after the upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, passed it earlier on Wednesday. The pension reform will gradually raise the retirement age for men to 65 from 60, and for women from 55 to 60 -- the first hike in almost 90 years. |
Israel reinforces troops outside Gaza as border protests enter seventh month Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:17 AM PDT The Israeli statements did not appear to herald any imminent offensive in Gaza but suggested stronger action at the frontier to foil any further Palestinian attempts to breach Israel's security fence during the demonstrations, which began in March. Israeli army gunfire has killed at least 193 Palestinians since, Gaza medics say. Israel accuses Hamas of orchestrating the mass-mobilizations to provide cover for attacks and distract from Gaza's economic plight, allegations it denies. |
