Author Eric Metaxas, evangelical intellectual, chose Trump, and he's sticking with him Posted: 23 Feb 2018 02:00 AM PST Eric Metaxas, who wrote a bestselling biography of the anti-Nazi pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, surprised his friends when he came out in support of Donald Trump. And nothing that has happened since the election has changed his mind. Jon Ward explores what led him to this position and how he deals with the suspicions that he is "a fundamentalist in an intellectual's clothing." |

Canada to accept bid from Boeing for new fighter jets Posted: 22 Feb 2018 04:16 PM PST Canada said Thursday it was allowing Boeing to submit a bid to replace the country's aging F-18 fleet, after an earlier trade dispute between the American manufacturer and Ottawa. The announcement came a month after the US International Trade Commission rejected a complaint filed by Boeing against its Canadian rival Bombardier, demanding nearly 300 percent anti-dumping duties on the C Series passenger plane. Boeing, which makes the Super Hornet, is one of five manufacturers invited to submit proposals in spring 2019 for an order of 88 advanced fighter jets, which are to be delivered in 2025, according to a Canadian government statement. |

Posted: 22 Feb 2018 02:00 AM PST Too often, Mitt Romney has treated principled rhetoric like a stretchy suit he can change into in a phone booth, then throw into a trash can when no one's looking. But if he wins a Utah Senate seat, he could become something he's never managed to be: the most influential figure in the GOP outside of the White House. |

Armed deputy at Florida school resigns after failing to engage shooter Posted: 22 Feb 2018 03:06 PM PST The armed deputy assigned to the campus of a Florida high school during a deadly shooting last week stayed outside the building during the attack and failed to engage the shooter, the county sheriff said on Thursday. As a consequence, Scott Peterson, on duty as the school resource officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, resigned from the department, said Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, who earlier has suspended the officer from the force. Israel said he decided to suspend Peterson after viewing a video that showed the deputy's actions during the rampage that killed 17 people. |
Five-day assault on Syria enclave kills more than 400 Posted: 22 Feb 2018 06:47 PM PST Fresh bombardment on Eastern Ghouta killed dozens Thursday, bringing the number of dead civilians in a five-day assault by the Syrian government to more than 400. Mounting calls for a humanitarian truce in one of the bloodiest episodes of Syria's seven-year conflict failed to stop 46 more people being killed by air strikes and rocket fire. Regime backer Russia said there was "no agreement" at the UN Security Council on a 30-day ceasefire for Syria and presented amendments to a draft resolution that would allow aid deliveries and the evacuation of civilians from besieged Eastern Ghouta. |

The enclave, controlled by Islamists and besieged by government forces for five years, was already subjected to a ferocious five-day air assault this month that left around 250 civilians dead and hundreds wounded. The new round of strikes by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad has killed more than 360 civilians and wounded 1,700 others since Sunday. |
