Posted: 15 Dec 2017 10:21 AM PST Israeli troops shot dead four Palestinians and wounded 150 others with live fire on Friday, medical officials said, as protests over US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital entered a second week. Most of the casualties were on the Gaza Strip border, where thousands of Palestinians gathered to hurl rocks at Israeli soldiers beyond the fortified fence. Medics said two protesters, one of them wheelchair-bound, were killed and 150 wounded. In the occupied West Bank, another area where Palestinians are seeking statehood along with adjacent East Jerusalem, medics said two protesters were killed and 10 wounded by Israeli gunfire. One of the dead was a man who Israeli police troopers said was shot after he stabbed a member of their unit. Reuters witnesses said the Palestinian held a knife and wore what looked like a bomb belt. A Palestinian medic who helped evacuate the man for treatment said the belt was fake. Palestinians -- and the wider Arab and Muslim world -- were incensed at Trump's December 6 announcement, which reversed decades of U.S. policy reticence on Jerusalem, a city where both Israel and the Palestinians want sovereignty. Gaza's dominant Hamas Islamists, which reject coexistence with Israel, called last week for a new Palestinian uprising, but any such mass-mobilisation has yet to be seen in the West Bank or East Jerusalem. There have been almost nightly Gazan rocket launches into Israel, so far without casualties. Israel has responded with air strikes on Hamas facilities, one of which killed two gunmen. The Israeli military said that, on Friday, about 3,500 Palestinians demonstrated near the Gaza border fence. "During the violent riots IDF (Israel Defence Force) soldiers fired selectively towards main instigators," the military said in a statement. Pictures from the scene show Aqal with a knife and what appears to be a suicide belt A military spokeswoman had no immediate comment on the wheelchair-bound protestor, Ibrahim Abu Thuraya. Abu Thuraya, 29, was a regular at such demonstrations. In media interviews, he said he had lost both his legs in a 2008 Israeli missile strike in Gaza. In the West Bank, the Israeli military said that about 2,500 Palestinians took part in riots, rolling flaming tyres and throwing fire bombs and rocks at soldiers and border police. Israel captured East Jerusalem, an area laden with Jewish, Muslim and Christian shrines, from Jordan in the 1967 war and later annexed it in a move not recognised internationally. Palestinians hope that part of the city will be the capital of a future independent state and Palestinian leaders say Trump's move is a serious blow to a moribund peace process. Israel has welcomed Trump's announcement as recognising political reality and biblical Jewish roots in Jerusalem. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to visit Israel, as well as Egypt, next week. (Writing by Dan Williams; Editing by Catherine Evans and Hugh Lawson) |

Battle lines drawn for South Africa's ANC on eve of leadership vote Posted: 15 Dec 2017 10:58 AM PST By Alexander Winning and Mfuneko Toyana JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The African National Congress (ANC), South Africa's ruler since the end of apartheid, faces perhaps the most pivotal few days in its recent history when it meets over the weekend to choose a successor to Jacob Zuma as party leader. The ANC's electoral dominance means whoever wins the job is likely to become South Africa's next president. Economic growth in Africa's traditional powerhouse has been lethargic over the last six years and the jobless rate stands near record levels. |
Trump loved net neutrality once upon a time Posted: 15 Dec 2017 07:17 AM PST You know the joke that there's an old Donald Trump tweet expressing the opposite of every single one of his administration's policies? Well, one exists for net neutrality as well. As the FCC voted Thursday to hand control of the internet over to massive corporations, it didn't take long for Twitter detectives to find out that President Trump used to be a pretty big fan of net neutrality. In a late 2014 tweet, Trump criticized Obama (shocking) for attacking the internet, and defended net neutrality as "the Fairness Doctrine." Obama's attack on the internet is another top down power grab. Net neutrality is the Fairness Doctrine. Will target conservative media. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 12, 2014 Most interestingly, Trump claimed that a breakdown of net neutrality rules would ultimately attack conservative media. You see, he's probably right about that. As we wrote, the prospective ability for ISPs to pick and choose which content to throttle and which to prioritize might very well endanger smaller news sites like Infowars and Breitbart. It's entirely conceivable that Comcast, a major internet provider that also owns NBC, might prioritize access to NBC news at the expense of smaller, conservative media — especially if that media is publishing things that aren't terribly popular or accurate. In the meantime, Trump's family weighed in with their typical subtlety. I would pay good money to see all those people complaining about Obama's FCC chairman voting to repeal #NetNeutality actually explain it in detail. I'd also bet most hadn't heard of it before this week. #outrage — Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) December 15, 2017 WATCH: This sleeping companion is your new best friend |

'Bad news for our enemies': EU launches defense pact Posted: 14 Dec 2017 10:35 AM PST By Robin Emmott BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union nations, now unfettered by Britain's decision to quit, achieved a 70-year-old ambition on Thursday to integrate their defenses, launching a pact between 25 EU governments to fund, develop and deploy armed forces together. European Council President Donald Tusk deemed the move "bad news for our enemies". First blocked by the French parliament in the 1950s and later by Britain, which feared creation of an EU army, the pact aims to end the squandering of billions of euros by splintered defense policies. |

China says war must not be allowed on Korean peninsula Posted: 14 Dec 2017 09:29 AM PST By Ben Blanchard BEIJING (Reuters) - The crisis over North Korea's weapons programs must be resolved through talks, not war, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday, while U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the danger of "sleepwalking" into conflict. Xi made his comments to visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson offered on Tuesday to begin direct talks with North Korea without pre-conditions. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tillerson's offer of direct contacts with North Korea was "a very good signal" while warning that any U.S. strike on the country would have catastrophic consequences. |

China angered as U.S. considers navy visits to Taiwan Posted: 14 Dec 2017 12:16 AM PST By Michael Martina and Jess Macy Yu BEIJING/TAIPEI (Reuters) - China accused the United States on Thursday of interfering in its internal affairs and said it had lodged a complaint after U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law an act laying the groundwork for possible U.S. navy visits to self-ruled Taiwan. Tensions have risen in recent days after a senior Chinese diplomat threatened China would invade Taiwan if any U.S. warships made port visits to the island which China claims as its own territory. |

US presses Thailand to downgrade ties with North Korea Posted: 14 Dec 2017 03:35 AM PST The US has urged Thailand to downgrade diplomatic and trade ties with North Korea, a senior Thai official said Thursday after meeting with an American envoy, as the Trump administration pushes ahead with a global campaign to further isolate the nuclear-armed pariah state. General Wanlop Rugsanoah, secretary general of Thailand's National Security Council, told AFP the request was made during his meeting with US special envoy for North Korea Joseph Yun, who arrived in Bangkok Wednesday evening for a two-day trip to the kingdom. "The US asked Thailand to put more pressure on North Korea, put more trade and diplomatic pressure," Wanlop said after his sit-down with Yun in Bangkok. |
