Money: The One Thing America Could Give to North Korea to Denuclearize? Posted: 05 Jun 2019 09:20 AM PDT It is tempting to blame North Korea for failed nuclear negotiations. Pyongyang has certainly been a dubious, cheating counter-party in the past, most recently over the "Leap Day Deal." It is also true that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un offered President Donald Trump a lopsided, heavily North Korea-balanced deal—full sanctions relief in exchange for closing one aging nuclear facility—when they met for a second time in February. Trump was right to walk away from the "bad deal" that Kim Jong-un presented to him at the Hanoi summit. But it should be noted that the United States has also offered lopsided deals during negotiations. In the run-up to the first Trump-Kim summit in Singapore last year, Trump administration officials kept insisting that they would only accept the "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization" (CVID) of the North, and that this was too happen speedily. This insistence continued into the fall of 2018, which is when U.S. officials went to Pyongyang to negotiate. CVID is an enormous demand, effectively asking for unilateral disarmament after the North spent decades developing the deadly weapons. In exchange the United States offered vagaries about a peace treaty or modernization, but it did not offer anything close to the value of the North's nukes. |
iOS 13 will effectively kill 3D Touch – one of the iPhone’s most underappreciated features Posted: 05 Jun 2019 05:08 PM PDT With a whole lot of fanfare, Apple in 2015 introduced 3D Touch to the world and positioned it as one of the flagship features of the iPhone 6s. Years in the making, 3D Touch was supposed to change the way we used our smartphones by completely adding a completely new and intuitive method of UI interaction.Nearly four years after its introduction, however, it's fair to say that 3D Touch never quite managed to live up to the hype that accompanied its unveiling. While the feature -- which presented users with a variety of contextual options based on the amount of pressure applied to the display -- was technologically impressive, it was not readily discoverable or even available on all iOS devices. In light of that, we're now seeing reports that Apple with iOS 13 has effectively axed the feature altogether in favor of a long press alternative.Rumors of 3D Touch's demise started to spring up in the weeks and months ahead of WWDC. And now that the first iOS 13 beta is in the hands of developers, 9to5Mac confirms that iOS users with 3D Touch-enabled devices will no longer be able to take advantage of 3D Touch once iOS 13 drops.> The good news is that the features provided by 3D Touch, like Peek and Pop or Home Screen Quick Actions, are now available with long-press gestures. The bad news is that owners of 3D Touch phones, i.e. all iPhones since the iPhone 6s apart from the SE and the XR, lose out on functionality that existed in previous OS versions.> > Apple has standardized on a new long-press gesture for contextual actions in iOS 13. This gesture is available on all iPhones, iPads and the seventh-generation iPod touch. It's a bit disheartening to see a feature brimming with utility and untapped potential kicked to the curb. And while a long press offers some of the same benefits, there's no disputing that it represents a "definite regression in fluidity and functionality for 3D Touch iPhones."Having said that, and in light of the fact that 3D Touch was not as widely used as many anticipated, the sad reality is that most iOS users won't even know what they're missing. |

Dem rivals rebuke Biden for not backing abortion rule repeal Posted: 05 Jun 2019 06:43 PM PDT Joe Biden is under fire from his Democratic presidential rivals and women's rights advocates for his defense of a decades-old prohibition on federal money paying for abortions. Most Democratic White House hopefuls reflect their party's latest platform calling for the outright repeal of the Hyde Amendment, which traces back to a compromise made when Biden was a young Delaware senator in the years after the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling legalized abortion nationwide. The hedging prompted intraparty outcry, with top Democrats reaffirming their commitment to abortion rights and scrapping the Hyde Amendment. |
US D-Day veterans find 'second family' in modern Normandy Posted: 05 Jun 2019 08:25 AM PDT Sainte-Mère-Église (France) (AFP) - Three quarters of a century ago, they came to Normandy's beaches as young men, many still in their teens, braving German fire to free France from Nazi occupation and help win the war in Europe. Thousands of people are expected in Normandy on Thursday to remember June 6, 1944, when 156,000 Allied troops crossed the English Channel to dislodge German forces from the French coast. One of them is James Carroll, an American veteran who arrived, aged 19, on June 12, 1944, on Omaha Beach, the bloodiest of the five Normandy sites picked for the D-Day landings. |

US opens new mass facility in Texas for migrant children Posted: 06 Jun 2019 04:32 PM PDT The federal government is opening a new mass facility to hold migrant children in Texas and considering detaining hundreds more youths on three military bases around the country, adding up to 3,000 new beds to the already overtaxed system. The new emergency facility in Carrizo Springs, Texas, will hold as many as 1,600 teens in a complex that once housed oil field workers on government-leased land near the border, said Mark Weber, a spokesman for Office of Refugee Resettlement. The agency is also weighing using Army and Air Force bases in Georgia, Montana and Oklahoma to house an additional 1,400 kids in the coming weeks, amid the influx of children traveling to the U.S. alone. |
Posted: 06 Jun 2019 02:22 AM PDT Photo Illustration by Sarah Rogers/The Daily Beast/Photos GettyIn this special series, LGBT celebrities and public figures talk to Tim Teeman about the Stonewall Riots and their legacy—see more here.Antoni Porowski is a TV personality, actor, chef and model, star of Queer Eye.When/how did you first hear about the Stonewall Riots, and what did you make of them?I learned about the Stonewall Riots during my first Pride in New York. I had already been living here for a few years and my friend Klaus was surprised to learn that I had never attended. He took me to the Stonewall Inn and explained its significance. I quickly felt embarrassed for my perception of Pride and its meaning which, prior to this moment of education, consisted of the idea that Pride was simply a loud party, with no basis in a historical event. I'm so grateful that he invited me that day.Want To Feel Gay Pride? Go HereWhat is the riots' significance for you?The riots, along with the civil rights movement, helped shape the course for LGBTQIA visibility and a demand for equal rights. Fifty years later, we are still fighting, as shown with the Equality Act, to protect federal rights for all. The ability to feel equal to our cisgendered and/or heterosexual fellows affects the way we feel not only about ourselves but also how we navigate society and our feeling like we are truly a part of it. Life is challenging enough as it is. Equal rights and freedom of expression, in all its forms, should be a given. Especially during difficult times, we must remember Stonewall and respect what was done to pave the way to where we are today. How far have we LGBT people come since 1969?I'm conflicted with this question. In some ways I feel we've made tremendous progress, and in others I cannot believe the Equality Act is even a thing that needs debating in 2019. I'm also aware that the LGBTQIA experience in New York is not representative of the rest of the country or world, which is not to say that we are a utopia for our queer fellows. I will say that I do feel visibility is on the incline, which brings me hope. As a kid I had such limited LGBTQIA role models or people to look up to. As I grow older, that number has increased very much. What would you like to see, LGBT-wise, in the next 50 years?I haven't quoted this book in a while, but I want us to treat fluidity, being gay, all of it, the way the characters do in Hanya Yanagihara's book A Little Life. I want it to be normalized and not bring debate of whether it's a choice or not. I want gender and sexual orientation to be embraced without judgment.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Posted: 05 Jun 2019 02:47 AM PDT President Donald Trump appears to have softened his stance on climate change having been "moved" by Prince Charles' passion for the environment. In a 30-minute long interview, aired on Wednesday morning, Mr Trump - who has previously accused climate experts of having a "political agenda" - told ITV's Good Morning Britain he "totally listened" to Charles when the issue came up. He said of the meeting at Clarence House on Monday: "We had a 15-minute chat and it lasted an hour and a half and he did most of the talking. "What he really wants and what he feels strongly about is the future. He wants the best climate for the future. He wants a good climate and not a disaster." The US president has always been a sceptic, but when asked whether he now believes in climate change, Mr Trump said: "I believe there is a change in weather. I think it was called global warning, then it was called climate change, now it's called extreme weather. Prince Charles and President Trump with the Duchess of Cornwall and First Lady Melania Trump Credit: REUTERS "I think we had a great conversation about - as you would call it - climate change. "This is real, he believes that. He wants to have a world that's good for future generations and I do, too. "He's Prince Charles, he doesn't have to worry about future generations unless he's a very good person who cares about people, and that's what impressed me, maybe the most." Mr Trump also mentioned China, India and Russia, urging them to take more responsibility for their pollution. Donald Trump's UK state visit, in pictures Before his state visit, hundreds of climate change experts urged Prime Minister Theresa May to confront Donald Trump over his approach to the issue. A letter signed by 250 academics from universities and research bodies across the UK stated that his refusal to tackle global warming is "increasing risks for lives and livelihoods" around the world. |
You might have missed the most promising new feature of iOS 13 Posted: 05 Jun 2019 02:39 PM PDT iOS 13 might not be the huge leap forward that some Apple fans anticipated, but it does include a range of upgrades that will greatly improve the iOS experience. One that we've yet to highlight is called Optimized Battery Charging, and while it doesn't sound all that exciting, it might be the best addition of iOS 13.As MacRumors explains, Optimized Battery Charging can be found in the Battery Health section of the Settings app. "To reduce battery aging," the description reads, "iPhone learns from your daily charging routine so it can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use it." And by doing so, it can extend your battery's lifespan. In other words, if you plug your iPhone in overnight (as many of us do), it will no longer zip straight to 100% and sit at full capacity for hours while you sleep. Instead, it will charge up to 80% while you're sleeping and then finish charging the remaining 20% an hour or so before you wake up. Keeping your iPhone at 100% capacity while plugged in for hours at a time is bad for the battery, so with iOS 13, your battery may end up lasting longer.Whenever smartphone customers are asked about the features and upgrades they most want to see on their next phone, improved battery life is always at or near the top of the list. While iOS 13 likely won't make your battery last any longer on a day-to-day basis, you might end up squeezing an extra few weeks or months from the battery over the course of years thanks to the Optimized Battery Charging feature, which is huge. |

The Latest: Putin wants to turn a page on Russia-UK ties Posted: 06 Jun 2019 07:03 AM PDT Russian President Vladimir Putin says a page should be turned on the strain in relations between Moscow and London caused by the poisoning of a former spy. Relations between Russia and Britain have been in tatters over the March 4, 2018, nerve agent attack on double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the city of Salisbury. Britain has accused Russia of poisoning them with the nerve agent Novichok, accusations Moscow has denied. |
‘Daily Show’s’ Trevor Noah Exposes Trump Gaslighting on U.K. Protests Posted: 04 Jun 2019 06:09 PM PDT Despite receiving an official state dinner from outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May and Queen Elizabeth, President Donald Trump and his family have not been receiving the warmest of welcomes during his trip to the United Kingdom this week. "Man, British protesters are no joke," Trevor Noah said after sharing some of the most creative large-scale demonstrations with The Daily Show viewers Tuesday night. "Tens of thousands protesting Trump," he continued, "and this was in the rain, which I know to them is a summer day, but that's not the point." The host marveled at the fact that "even conservative people don't like Trump" in Britain, as evidenced by the snub the U.S. president received from May's likely successor, Boris Johnson. "They'll be like, 'There's too many bloody immigrants, it's time to shut down our borders," but if you ask them if they like Trump, they'll respond, "'Oh God no, not him. He's the worst immigrant of all!'" Of course, for Trump, Noah added, "protests are like Eric, he just pretends they don't exist." Stephen Colbert Mocks Ivanka and Jared's U.K. Trip: They Have 'No Business Being There'"Even coming over today, there were thousands of people cheering and then I heard that there were protests," Trump insisted to reporters during a press conference on Tuesday. "I said, 'Where are the protests? I don't see any protests.' I did see a small protest today when I came, very small, so a lot of it is fake news, I hate to say.""Oh man, Trump is adorable," Noah replied. "Because he doesn't go with one excuse, he goes with all of them and you can pick which one you like best." Mimicking the president, he added, "The people were cheering, I saw no protest, I saw a small protest, but it was a fake protest and I didn't see it!" Fact-checking Trump, Noah reported estimates that "tens of thousands of people marched in the streets, which is not small." "How does Trump always get this wrong?" he asked. "First his inauguration and now this? It's almost like Trump is dyslexic but just for crowd sizes. And also for words." Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Fox’s Tomi Lahren Touts Straight Pride Parade Run by Far-Right Extremists Posted: 06 Jun 2019 10:22 AM PDT Tomi Lahren's back with a brand new over-the-top aggrieved rant against political correctness and the liberal agenda. And hoo boy, was this one is a doozy. In her latest "First Thoughts" video essay posted Wednesday to Fox News' online streaming service Fox Nation, Lahren came to the defense of a group of far-right extremists who are attempting to hold a "Straight Pride Parade" in Boston later this summer.Noting at the start that June is Gay Pride Month, Lahren insisted she has "no issue with LGBT people being proud of who they are" before snarking that she "can do without men in speedos and buttless chaps parading through the streets." She then pivoted to the possibility that Boston may shut down the straight pride event, claiming "straight people aren't allowed to parade their heterosexuality for all to see." Highlighting that the group calls itself "Super Happy Fun America," the Fox Nation host touted the organization's "mission statement," which purports to embrace straight people's diversity and identity to "promote engagement with the community." Lahren, meanwhile, took issue with the backlash the event has received, claiming white men are the real victims. "Now, you wouldn't think that would be a problem, right? Wrong," she exclaimed. "Don't forget, it is open season on straight white men in this country and y'all aren't allowed to celebrate your straightness! It's 2019—don't you know that's been off limits for the last ten years!"She would go on to attack the "social-justice warriors" who mocked the parade and its organizers, sneering that it was "funny" that the "so-called loving and tolerant leftists and members of the LGBT community" demand respect for their events but demonize those they disagree with. She concluded her tirade in standard fashion, railing against anti-conservative bias before declaring: "I'm not afraid to say it. I'm straight and proud. There, deal with it!" Nowhere in her monologue, however, was any mention that the "Straight Pride Parade" is "a front for a far-right group founded by notorious right-wing brawler Kyle "Based Stickman" Chapman."As The Daily Beast reported this week, event organizer Mark Sahady is also an organizer of extremist group Resist Marxism, a group founded by Chapman, who gained fame on the far-right for attacking anti-fascists with a stick. Resist Marxism, whose members were exposed for making anti-Semitic jokes and slurs in leaked chats, has also used a white-nationalist hate group to run security during at least one event.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Overconfident? China Thinks Its Military Can Win in Almost Any Scenario Posted: 05 Jun 2019 08:27 AM PDT The vast majority of Chinese citizens believe the People's Liberation Army (PLA) could seize islands in the East and South China Seas, even if the U.S. military were to intervene in the conflicts. No less than 87 percent of respondents said that the Chinese military already possessed the capability to take back the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands from Japan, according to a recent public opinion poll. When asked whether they still believed the PLA could achieve this objective if the U.S. intervened in the conflict, 74 percent said yes.(This first appeared back in 2015.)The numbers were much the same for the South China Sea. When asked whether they believed the PLA could militarily take back disputed islands in the South China Sea, 85.6 percent of respondents said that China's military could achieve this objective. Even if the U.S. military intervened on behalf of the Southeast Asian nations, about 73 percent of respondents said they still believed the Chinese military would prevail.(Recommended: How Powerful Is America's Military Really?) |
Poll: Biden Leads Trump by Four Points in Texas Posted: 06 Jun 2019 09:58 AM PDT A new poll of red-leaning Texas has Joe Biden several points ahead of President Trump in a hypothetical general-election matchup. The former vice president leads Trump 48 to 44 in the Lone Star State, according to the Quinnipiac University poll, which was released Wednesday. Trump's leads over six other Democratic candidates -- Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Eizabeth Warren, Senator Kamala Harris, former Texas eepresentative Beto O'Rourke, former San Antonio mayor Julian Castro, and South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg -- in the poll are, like Biden's lead over him, within the margin of error."In historically red-leaning Texas, the report for the rest of the Democratic field is not so bad either, which could spell trouble for President Trump. It is the largest state in the country with a Republican edge," said Quinnipiac University Poll assistant director Peter Brown. "The president, who is on the wrong side of a too-close-to-call match-up with Biden, barely inches up in similar match-ups with all the other Democrats."As in a number of other parts of the country, Democratic candidates enjoy more support with women in Texas according to the poll. Female voters backed Biden 54 to 39 percent while men supported Trump 50 to 42 percent. Trump led 60 to 33 percent among white voters while Biden held strong leads with minority groups. The survey polled 1,159 Texas voters from May 29 to June 4. |
