Yahoo News Explains: Why we’re closer to climate catastrophe than we thought Posted: 09 Oct 2018 03:42 PM PDT The planet is even closer to catastrophe than scientists previously predicted, according to a new report from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The report, that took 3 years to create and included 91 authors from 40 countries, says the planet will reach the crucial threshold of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels as early as 2040. Scientists predict that any higher than 1.5°C and the effects will be irreversible. "There is extreme urgency and countries were giving their pledges after the Paris agreement and so far, the progress has not been good enough," said World Meteorological Organizations secretary, Petteri Taalas. |

Self-driving cars may hit U.S. roads in pilot program - NHTSA Posted: 09 Oct 2018 09:15 PM PDT Fully self-driving cars may be on the fast lane to U.S. roads under a pilot program the Trump administration said on Tuesday it was considering, which would allow real-world road testing for a limited number of the vehicles. Self-driving cars used in the program would potentially need to have technology disabling the vehicle if a sensor fails or barring vehicles from traveling above safe speeds, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a document made public Tuesday. NHTSA said it was considering whether it would have to be notified of any accident within 24 hours and was seeking public input on what other data should be disclosed including near misses. |

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha told lawmakers Wednesday that the ministry was consulting with other related authorities on whether to lift sanctions imposed on North Korea after the March 2010 sinking of South Korean naval ship Cheonan. |

Most heavy arms pulled out of planned Syria buffer zone Posted: 09 Oct 2018 07:27 AM PDT Jihadists and Turkish-backed rebels in Syria's last major opposition stronghold have withdrawn heavy weapons from nearly all of a planned buffer zone, a monitor said Tuesday, a day ahead of deadline. The pullback is the first major test of a deal brokered by government ally Russia and Turkey last month to avoid what the United Nations warned would be the appalling humanitarian consequences of a major government offensive. Analysts had expected Ankara to have a difficult time enforcing the September 17 deal but by Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the heavy weapons pullout was nearly complete. |

Wray made his comments days after President Donald Trump signed into law legislation that gives the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI new powers to disable or destroy drones that pose a threat to government facilities. |

BMW has given no details on the production i4 aside from the release date, but that concept had an electric range of 373 miles (albeit on the very optimistic European test cycle), a top speed of 125 mph, and a zero-to-62-mph time of 4.0 seconds. |

Kavanaugh makes US Supreme Court debut Posted: 09 Oct 2018 12:05 PM PDT New US Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh dove into his new job Tuesday, shrugging off the controversy over his nomination and firing off a handful of questions at his first hearing, a case on prison reform. A handful of protesters rallied outside the court in opposition to the conservative justice, who was confirmed on Saturday by the Senate by a razor-thin margin after weeks of partisan rancor. "We will not forget!" the group shouted -- a reference to the accusations of sexual assault that threatened to derail Kavanaugh's nomination, allegations that the 53-year-old strongly denied. |

Pope compares having an abortion to 'hiring a hit man' Posted: 10 Oct 2018 04:35 AM PDT Abortion is a raging political battle in a number of countries, including the United States, where many conservatives hope the Supreme Court will eventually overturn the landmark 1973 ruling known as Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion. Francis made his off-the-cuff comments on abortion, some of his toughest to date, in an address to tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square for his weekly general audience. "I ask you: 'Is it right to 'take out' a human life to solve a problem? |

The first space tourists, who visited the International Space Station (ISS) in the 2000s, paid tens of millions of dollars for the privilege. |

South Korea says Pompeo complained about inter-Korean military pact Posted: 10 Oct 2018 08:29 AM PDT The deal was sealed by South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during their third summit in Pyongyang on Sept. 18-20. During an annual parliamentary audit on Wednesday, an opposition party lawmaker asked Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha if Pompeo had complained about the agreement during a phone call reported earlier by Japan's Nikkei newspaper. While maintaining that it remains in lockstep with the United States, South Korea has forged ahead with efforts to engage with North Korea, even as critics accused Moon of naively focusing on feel-good theatrics at the expense of real progress in persuading North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. |
Morgan Stanley Gives Up on Flattening Yield Curve Too Soon Posted: 10 Oct 2018 02:00 AM PDT In July 2016, when the 10-year Treasury yield reached an unprecedented low of 1.32 percent, he pushed the envelope, declaring "the year of the bull for rates markets" would push the global benchmark to 1 percent. In what the bank's chief cross-asset strategist deemed Morgan Stanley's "most controversial call, by a country mile," Hornbach projected in late 2017 that 30-year yields would fall to a record low 2 percent by the end of this year. |
