Afghanistan claims U.S. airstrike kills child, wounds 2 women

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 12:24 PM PST

Karzai speaks during the last day of the Loya Jirga, in KabulPresident Hamid Karzai said U.S. forces had bombed a home in southern Afghanistan, killing a small child and wounding two women, and condemned the attack as a sign of disregard for civilian lives, his spokesman said on Thursday. The strike could not have come at a worse time, as Karzai is engaged in a stand-off with the U.S. government over a bilateral security agreement that will decide whether U.S. troop stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014. "It shows that U.S. forces have no respect for the decisions of the Loya Jirga and life of civilians in Afghanistan," said Karzai's spokesman, Aimal Faizi. "If such operations continue, there will be no agreement." The United States has threatened to pull its troops out of Afghanistan after 2014 - an outcome known as the "zero option", as it did in Iraq two years ago - unless a deal is clinched by the end of this year, Karzai, however, has so far refused to sign, despite getting approval from the Loya Jirga last week.

IAEA not ready to verify Iran nuclear deal

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 11:35 AM PST

The future of Iran's Arak heavy water IR-40 reactor is one of the key points in a landmark nuclear deal Tehran recently signed with world powers in GenevaThe UN nuclear watchdog said Thursday it was not yet ready to verify Iran's compliance with the recent deal with world powers, as Tehran invited inspectors to the key Arak site. "We need to study the agreement (struck in Geneva on Sunday) and we have to identify the ways in which the elements relevant to the IAEA be put into practice," International Atomic Energy Agency chief Yuyika Amano said. He added that the Vienna-based body would need more money to carry out the enlarged inspection role foreseen in Iran's breakthrough deal with the United States, China, Britain, France and Germany -- the P5+1. "This requires a significant amount of money and manpower.... The IAEA's budget is very, very tight.

A sinister night for 3 women in Egypt protest wave

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 11:40 AM PST

FILE - In this Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013 file photo, Egyptian police fire water cannons to disperse a protest by secular anti-government activists in Cairo, the security forces' first implementation of a controversial new law forbidding protests held without a permit from authorities. After being detained at a Cairo protest, the 14 women, some of Egypt's most prominent democracy advocates, were beaten, pulled by the hair and piled into a police van, taken on a sinister nighttime ride through the desert where they were finally dumped by the road, the women recount. The abuse, reminiscent of the Hosni Mubarak era, points to how Egypt's new military-backed authorities are becoming bolder in silencing dissent, exploiting the fight against Islamists and divisions among secular activists. (AP Photo/Mohammed Asad, File)CAIRO (AP) — The three women are among Egypt's most active democracy campaigners, the faces of its revolution. Through a string of rulers the past three years— autocrat Hosni Mubarak, the military, the Islamists — they have been at the forefront of protests, chronicled police abuses and struggled to limit the power of the military.

When the parade began in 1924, it was called the Macy's Christmas Parade and featured live animals from the Central Park Zoo marching along with Macy's employees, according to the store's website. It wasn't until three years later, in 1927, that the parade included balloons. The inflatables have been part of the tradition every year since then - except for 1971, when they were grounded by bad weather and high winds.

FILE - In this Jan. 3, 2013, file photo, Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., right, participates in a mock swearing-in ceremony with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, for the 113th Congress in Washington. Cloistered in a tense, private Capitol Hill meeting for House Democrats this month, Eshoo had some advice for the aides to President Barack Obama who were trying, with questionable success, to assure the unhappy caucus present that the woeful web site for the president's signature health care law would soon be working. In fact, they pledged, by Nov. 30, the "vast majority" of Americans who try to buy policies on the "Obamacare" will succeed. Stop setting "red lines" that might be broken, Eshoo told the presidential aides, according to a person present who was not authorized to release the exchange. (AP Photo/ Evan Vucci, File)WASHINGTON (AP) — A month after emerging from a government shutdown at the top of their game, many Democrats in Congress newly worried about the party's re-election prospects are for the first time distancing themselves from President Barack Obama after the disastrous rollout of his health care overhaul.
