Honduran migrant 'caravan' resumes from Mexico to US: AFP reporter Posted: 21 Oct 2018 06:12 AM PDT Thousands of Honduran migrants resumed their march toward the United States on Sunday from the southern Mexican city of Ciudad Hidalgo. Mexican authorities on Thursday had managed to block the "caravan" of migrants on a border bridge between Mexico and Guatemala, but many later entered via a river separating the two countries. "No one is going to stop us, after all we've gone through, like crossing the river" said 21-year-old Aaron Juarez, who was accompanied by his wife and baby and was walking with difficulty because of an injury. |
Israel delays eviction of West Bank Bedouin village Posted: 20 Oct 2018 02:44 PM PDT Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday postponed the forced eviction of a Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank, a government official said. The fate of Khan al-Ahmar has drawn international concern after Israel said it planned to raze the village, a ramshackle camp housing 180 residents. Its residents, backed by foreign activists who have gathered at the site, have been waiting for bulldozers to move in at any time after an Oct. 1 deadline from Israel for the villagers to demolish their own homes expired. |

Israel reopens people, goods crossings to Gaza: statement Posted: 20 Oct 2018 10:25 PM PDT Israel ordered the country's goods and people border crossings with Gaza to be opened on Sunday, just four days after shuttering them following a Palestinian rocket attack that sparked retaliatory strikes. "The decision comes after a decrease in the violent events in Gaza over the weekend and efforts (militant Islamist Gaza rulers) Hamas made to restrain" demonstrators, a statement from Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman office read. On Wednesday, Lieberman had ordered the closure of the Kerem Shalom goods crossing and the Erez crossing for people, after a rocket from the Palestinian territory hit a home in southern Israel, prompting the Jewish state to strike 20 Hamas targets in Gaza. |

Immunotherapy scores a first win against some breast cancers Posted: 20 Oct 2018 01:43 PM PDT For the first time, one of the new immunotherapy drugs has shown promise against breast cancer in a large study that combined it with chemotherapy to treat an aggressive form of the disease. But the benefit for most women was small, raising questions about whether the treatment is worth its high cost and side effects. |

Mnuchin says premature to comment on sanctions against Saudi Arabia Posted: 21 Oct 2018 04:08 AM PDT Mnuchin said information so far on the investigation was "a good first step but not enough" as Riyadh faced international pressure to disclose what happened to Khashoggi, who disappeared after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized on Saturday that he was not satisfied with the Saudis' handling of the case, further raising questions over whether he would act to impose sanctions on Saudi officials believed to be behind Khashoggi's death. "It would be premature to comment on sanctions and premature to comment on really any issues until we get further down the investigation and get to the bottom of what occurred," Mnuchin told reporters in Jerusalem at the start of a Middle East visit. |
Special police force deployed in Nigerian state of Kaduna: Buhari on Twitter Posted: 21 Oct 2018 11:46 AM PDT A special police force has been deployed to flashpoints in the northern state of Kaduna on Sunday in the wake of communal violence over the last few days that has killed 55 people, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Twitter. The Kaduna state government imposed a 24-hour curfew on Sunday after violence broke out on the streets of the state's capital city, also called Kaduna. |

Blast kills five civilians at scene of shootout in Kashmir Posted: 21 Oct 2018 09:34 AM PDT Indian police said "leftover explosives" were responsible for a blast in Kashmir that killed at least five civilians Sunday as they protested against government forces shooting dead three alleged militants. Protesters had surged the site of a shootout in southern Kulgam town, chanting slogans against Indian rule and hurling rocks at troops as they fired at unidentified gunmen. Three alleged rebels were shot dead in the exchange but a subsequent explosion at the scene killed five demonstrators, said inspector-general of police Swayam Prakash Pani. |
Posted: 20 Oct 2018 10:00 AM PDT This is One Good Thing , a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week. Halloween is fast approaching and while you may think your planned costume's impressive, there's a very good chance it won't top this fifth grader who dressed as a baked potato. Reddit user seal2781, a 24-year-old named Celia, recently shared a throwback Halloween picture from 2004 — the year she followed her heart and dressed as a baked potato wrapped in foil with a li'l pat of butter on top. Precious! Delicious! All around wholesome! The costume is one of the closest things we've seen to absolute Halloween perfection, and the kind of ensemble we should all strive to put together this time of year. If you're having doubts about how great it is, we're not exaggerating. See for yourself... SEE ALSO: This Kevin from 'The Office' Halloween costume for babies needs to exist IRL Celia told Mashable via Reddit that she fashioned the wearable baked potato for her elementary school Halloween costume contest. The costume won first prize and for that, she received a whole $5! "The day before the contest I decided I wanted to be a baked potato," she wrote. "I'm not really sure why — I just thought it would be funny." She says her dad Ron helped make the costume out of cardboard boxes. "We covered the boxes in wide plastic wrap to hold it all together, and then covered it in foil and added the fluff and brown paper 'skin.' The pad of butter was just a small pizza box covered in yellow cellophane paper." The baked potato has everything you'd want from a good costume. The homemade aspect shows off your resourceful side, it'll give people a good laugh, and you'll also stand out from a crowd of store bought superheroes, princesses, and more. Though it does have one downfall... "The main thing I remember about the costume was how hot it was. I really felt like a baked potato wearing it," Celia said. But still, an overall success. Celia's family has been cranking out next-level costumes for years, she explained, recalling her brother's most memorable ensemble: a massive five-foot tall baseball bat. Stunning. Saudi admission over critic's killing shields crown prince Posted: 20 Oct 2018 06:09 AM PDT Saudi Arabia's admission -- after emphatic denials -- over the killing of critic Jamal Khashoggi is aimed at shifting the responsibility away from the powerful crown prince, whose position so far appears unshaken, analysts say. The kingdom sacked two top aides to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as well three intelligence officials and arrested 18 Saudi suspects, in what some analysts called a scapegoating to quell the global outrage over Khashoggi's killing. After 17 days of vehement denials, the kingdom's assertion on Saturday that the journalist was killed in a "brawl and fist fight" inside a Saudi consulate in Istanbul –- without revealing the whereabouts of his body -- fell on sceptical ears around the world. |
Poland's local vote result a good sign for PiS: party chief Kaczynski Posted: 21 Oct 2018 12:29 PM PDT WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland's regional elections on Sunday bode well for the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party during a parliamentary vote next year, PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said. "We have won ... and this bodes well when it comes to the future, especially for the parliamentary election," Kaczynski said on Sunday after exit poll showed PiS had scored 32.3 percent in the vote for provincial assembly members. Brett Kavanaugh: Witches placed mass hex on Supreme Court Justice during New York protest ritual Posted: 21 Oct 2018 05:43 AM PDT Witches placed a hex on US Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during a protest ritual in New York. The spell, which was livestreamed on Facebook and Instagram on Saturday, was also targeted at "all rapists and the patriarchy which emboldens, rewards and protects them". Organisers at the Catland occult bookshop in Brooklyn said the hex was as "an act of resistance and resilience" following the controversy over allegations of sexual assault against Mr Kavanaugh. |

"I agree with all those who say when it comes to our already limited arms exports (to Saudi Arabia) that they cannot take place in the current situation," she told reporters at her party headquarters. |
Royal tour: Duke and Duchess of Sussex unveil Sydney's Anzac memorial Posted: 19 Oct 2018 09:45 PM PDT The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have paid tribute to Australia's war dead as they attended the unveiling of an Anzac memorial 84 years in the making. The Anzac Memorial in Sydney's Hyde Park, which commemorates the sacrifices made by those who served for Australia and New Zealand, was designed in the 1930s by Bruce Dellitt. But following the Great Depression, the finances were not available to make Mr Dellitt's vision - including a four-tier cascading waterfall on the Liverpool Street side of the monument - a reality. The Duke, wearing the tropical dress of his regiment, the Blues and Royals, with medals, KCVO and sword, and Duchess, wearing an Emilia Wickstead dress and Philip Tracey hat, were met by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Premier of New South Wales Gladys Berejiklian and David Elliott, minister for Veterans Affairs on an overcast Sydney morning. There were also crowds along Liverpool Street, while more people - and a cardboard cutout of Harry and Meghan - watched on from balconies as the royals arrived. The girls, aged nine, are from the Koomurri Aboriginal Dance Troupe and both said they were nervous about meeting and performing for Harry and Meghan. Krystal, who did an Aboriginal art floral painting, said: "They said hi and 'nice to meet you'." The medallion, presented by Sienna, said "play the game", the motto of the Beverly Hills public school which they attend. Duke and Duchess of Sussex's royal tour of Australia - in pictures She said: "I didn't want to dance at first, but then it was fun." The Sussexes will visit the Hall Of Service, which contains 1,700 soil samples from each town, suburb and district in New South Wales listed as an address for First World War enlistees. The completion of the extension, which cost £22 million, coincides with the 100th anniversary of the cessation of hostilities in the war. |
Indian officials exchange blame for train plowing into festival crowd Posted: 20 Oct 2018 02:56 AM PDT Punjab state's Chief Minister Amarinder Singh told reporters on Saturday that 59 people had died with 57 injured in the accident and that an official inquiry would be carried out over the next four weeks. A large crowd had formed near the tracks on the city's fringe for the burning of effigies as part of a major Hindu festival on Friday when the train sped through the gathering in darkness, officials and witnesses said. Grieving relatives and residents, some of whom were still scouring the bloodied fields for belongings of their loved ones, said there was no warning from the train as it rolled down the tracks just as firecrackers exploded in the sky in the annual Dusshera festival. |
Counting under way in Afghan poll marred by deadly violence, chaos Posted: 20 Oct 2018 12:20 PM PDT Afghan election workers began counting votes on Saturday following a partial legislative ballot tarnished by scores of deadly militant attacks, technical glitches and administrative chaos. Nearly 170 people -- civilians and security forces -- were killed or wounded in election-related violence, official figures showed, and there are fears of more bloodshed when voting resumes Sunday in 401 polling centres. "Inevitable" problems with biometric verification devices, which were introduced at the eleventh hour, as well as missing voter registration lists and lack of staffing delayed or even prevented voting at those polling sites, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) told reporters. |

Israel puts West Bank Bedouin village eviction on hold for several weeks Posted: 21 Oct 2018 05:26 AM PDT The decision was announced after a meeting of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet. Israel, which has long sought to clear the Arab nomads from tracts of land between the Jewish settlements of Maale Adumim and Kfar Adumim, has said the hamlet of Khan al-Ahmar was built without the required permits. Palestinians, who lost an Israeli Supreme Court appeal against the evacuation, say such documents are impossible to obtain. |
Khashoggi Damage Control and Brazilian Insults: Weekend Reads Posted: 20 Oct 2018 05:00 AM PDT Attempts at damage control over the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, finally confirmed by Saudi Arabia, have kicked into high gear both in the kingdom and Washington. Suspicion that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had knowledge of the Washington Post columnist's death is putting a spotlight on the alliance between the U.S. and one of its most important Mideast allies. With the U.S. midterms less than three weeks away, the scandal is competing for headlines with a host of other issues, ranging from how Trump might be undermining Republican candidates' efforts to capitalize on the booming economy to Democrats' hope of mobilizing minorities to take control of Congress. |
Worried Britons to rally for new Brexit vote Posted: 19 Oct 2018 06:55 PM PDT Britons dreading life outside Europe will rally from all corners to London Saturday to try to stop their country's looming breakup with the EU. The march on parliament is set to be a noisy and festive affair uniting tens of thousands in the seemingly hopeless task of convincing Prime Minister Theresa May to hold a second Brexit referendum. Organisers of the so-called People's Vote March are asking people to dress up their favourite pets in costumes so that they could bark along the scenic route through the historic heart of London. |

Pregnant Meghan takes break from Australia royal tour Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:59 AM PDT Meghan, the pregnant wife of Britain's Prince Harry, is scaling back her engagements during the royal couple's 16-day Pacific tour, Kensington Palace said Sunday, ahead of their visit to Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand. The royal couple have had a gruelling schedule since arriving in Australia on Monday, visiting Sydney, Melbourne and the regional town of Dubbo, as well as opening the Olympic-style Invictus Games for disabled and wounded soldiers. "After a busy programme, The Duke and Duchess have decided to cut back The Duchess's schedule slightly for the next couple of days, ahead of the final week and a half of the tour," Kensington Palace said in a statement. |

Thousands of Hondurans in U.S.-bound migrant caravan head into Mexico Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:43 PM PDT Many members of the caravan, exhausted from the hours-long trek on foot from the Guatemalan border, mostly ignored police offers to board buses heading to a migrant shelter because of suspicions they might be deported instead. The migrants have defied threats by Trump that he will close the U.S.-Mexico border if the caravan advances, as well as warnings from the Mexican government that they risk deportation if they cannot justify seeking asylum in Mexico. Police in riot gear shadowed the caravan's arrival along a southern highway, but did not impede their journey. |

Saudi Arabia calls Khashoggi killing 'grave mistake,' says prince not aware Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:57 PM PDT The comments from Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir were some of the most direct yet from Riyadh, which has given multiple and conflicting accounts about Khashoggi's killing on Oct. 2, first denying his death and later admitting it amid an international outcry. The weeks of denial and lack of credible evidence in the face of allegations from Turkish officials that Khashoggi had been killed have shaken global confidence in ties with the world's top oil exporter. U.S. Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said Saudi Arabia's admission that the Washington Post columnist was killed in a fistfight was a "good first step but not enough," though he added it was premature to discuss sanctions against Riyadh. |
