Long lines at Colorado shops send 'pot stocks' higher Posted: 02 Jan 2014 01:21 PM PST Stocks of companies involved in the marijuana industry -- medical or otherwise -- hit fresh highs Thursday after Colorado launched the first legal US sale of recreational pot. Investors took the huge lines outside pot retailers in Colorado as a harbinger of potential growth in the still-new industry. In October the company launched a cooperative in Colorado to work with licensed marijuana industry participants, most of them too small to afford quality financial processing systems on their own. The company makes high-security storage and dispensing machines for controlled medicines, equipment used by marijuana distributors. |

Ga. banker accused of $21M fraud in custody after traffic stop Posted: 02 Jan 2014 11:09 AM PST By David Beasley ATLANTA (Reuters) - A former Georgia bank director who left a suicide note and vanished while under suspicion he embezzled $21 million has been captured 18 months after he disappeared. Sheriff's deputies arrested Aubrey Lee Price, 47, during a traffic stop on Interstate 95 near Brunswick, Georgia, on Tuesday after noticing the windows of his Dodge pickup appeared to be tinted too darkly to comply with state law, Glynn County Sheriff E. Neal Jump said. Price disappeared soon before his indictment in Georgia on one count of bank fraud in July 2012 and left behind a written confession and a note for family and friends saying he planned to kill himself, authorities said. |

Supporters and opponents alike have urged him to enter rehab, but Ford has insisted he is not an addict. |
Cheerful passengers live Tweet their Antarctic rescue Posted: 02 Jan 2014 06:50 AM PST All of the 52 passengers aboard a ship that's been stranded in the Antarctic ice for the last week were safely transferred by helicopter to a nearby Australian icebreaking vessel on Thursday. The Chinese Xue Long — the "Snow Dragon" — and the Australian Aurora Australis both abandoned attempts to approach the stranded ship through unusually dangerous conditions — risking becoming stuck in the ice themselves. Fortunately, Xue Long had a helicopter on board. The ship's passengers, a mix of tourists, journalists, and scientists, created a makeshift landing spot for the Chinese helicopter just before the New Year. |

The New York Times calls for Snowden to be allowed back Posted: 01 Jan 2014 09:41 PM PST "When someone reveals that government officials have routinely and deliberately broken the law," the Times editorial board writes, "that person should not face life in prison at the hands of the same government." Considering the enormous value of the information he has revealed, and the abuses he has exposed, Mr. Snowden deserves better than a life of permanent exile, fear and flight. "Why didn't he just bring the NSA's activity to the attention of superiors?" He did. Presenting another angle on the ongoing Snowden fiasco is The Washington Post's Ruth Marcus, who describes the man as "insufferable" as well as "smug, self-righteous, egotistical, disingenuous, megalomaniacal, overwrought." She just doesn't like that guy's personality, and that detail is definitely the right thing to focus on here. |
