Exclusive: California shooters likely planned multiple attacks - official Posted: 06 Dec 2015 12:20 PM PST U.S. investigators are increasingly convinced the California shooters planned multiple attacks, given their stockpile of weapons, and are looking at whether the Pakistani woman involved radicalized her American husband, officials said on Sunday. Investigators believe the weapons cache collected by Tashfeen Malik, 29, and her husband, Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, points to more attacks but they do not have evidence on other possible targets, a senior U.S. government source told Reuters. The couple stormed a gathering of his work colleagues in San Bernardino, California, on Wednesday, opening fire with assault-style rifles and killing 14 people. |
Former President Jimmy Carter says cancer gone from brain Posted: 06 Dec 2015 02:37 PM PST Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter delivered an unexpected message on Sunday to the several hundred people gathered at a Baptist church in Georgia for his Bible lesson - his latest brain scan showed no sign of cancer. Carter, 91, started treatment in August for melanoma that had spread from his liver to his brain. A previous MRI test showed the four spots of cancer that had developed on his brain were responding to treatment, he said. |
Obama to discuss security, Islamic State after California attack Posted: 06 Dec 2015 01:21 PM PST President Barack Obama will tell Americans on Sunday what the government is doing to keep them safe following the mass killing by a couple in California last week that is being investigated as an act of terrorism, but no major shift in strategy was expected. In a rare Oval Office address at 8 p.m. EST (0100 GMT), Obama will lay out the security steps the United States has taken since Islamic State's Nov. 13 assaults in Paris that killed 130 people, as well as since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, an administration official told Reuters. Obama said during a recent visit by French President Francois Hollande to the White House after the Paris attacks that the United States and its coalition would step up efforts to counter Islamic State. |
Justice Department to investigate Chicago police: source Posted: 06 Dec 2015 04:40 PM PST The U.S. Justice Department will open an investigation into the Chicago Police Department after protests over how it handled the case of a black teenager shot by a white police officer, a person familiar with the matter said on Sunday. The "patterns and practices" investigation will determine whether the department systematically violates constitutional rights. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, would not elaborate on the investigation. |
Red Cross seeking permission to work in IS territory Posted: 06 Dec 2015 08:49 AM PST The International Committee of the Red Cross has said it is trying to establish relations with the Islamic State group in hopes of delivering aid to the 10 million people living under its control. "Yes, we are of course looking at building a relationship" with IS, ICRC Director-General Yves Daccord told AFP in an interview. The comments were made ahead of an agency conference in Geneva, held every four years, which gathers some 2,000 ICRC employees and national Red Cross/Red Crescent staffers for talks on the challenges facing humanitarian workers in increasingly complex environments. |

Police call London Underground stabbing a 'terrorist incident' Posted: 06 Dec 2015 09:44 AM PST By James Davey and William James LONDON (Reuters) - A knife attacker slashed a man at an east London metro station, reportedly screaming "This is for Syria!", in what police described as a terrorist incident, prompting a senior minister to urge Britons on Sunday not to be intimidated. A pool of blood near the ticket barriers at the Leytonstone Underground station, about six miles (10 km) east of central London, could be seen in footage posted on Twitter that also showed the suspect confronting police on Saturday evening. One man, thought to be 56 years old, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was in a stable condition at a London hospital. |
