Mexico marks one year since 43 students vanished Posted: 26 Sep 2015 04:08 PM PDT Thousands marched in Mexico City Saturday to mark the first anniversary of the disappearance of 43 students in a murky case involving corrupt police that has haunted President Enrique Pena Nieto. Behind the 43 are thousands of disappeared," Sofia Rojas, a student at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, told AFP. Signs that read "Crime of the State" and "Get Out Pena" peppered the crowd as they streamed down the Paseo de la Reforma, the grand boulevard that runs through the center of the Mexican capital. |
In America's birthplace, pope gives pep talk to immigrants Posted: 26 Sep 2015 03:26 PM PDT By Philip Pullella and Scott Malone PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Pope Francis, speaking in America's birthplace on Saturday, offered stout words of support to Hispanic and other immigrants in the United States, telling them not to be discouraged at a time when some prominent politicians are directing hostility toward them. The 78-year-old Argentine pontiff toured Independence Hall in Philadelphia before addressing a crowd estimated at more than 40,000 outside the 18th century red brick building where basic American liberties were proclaimed and where independence from Britain was declared. "Do not be discouraged by whatever challenges and hardships you face," the pope told the many Hispanics and other recent immigrants to the United States in the crowd, adding that he felt "particular affection" toward them. |
New York governor calls for national gun control in eulogy for aide Posted: 26 Sep 2015 10:03 AM PDT By Katie Reilly NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo renewed his call for national gun control legislation on Saturday as he delivered a eulogy for the top state attorney who was fatally wounded by a stray bullet in Brooklyn earlier this month. State officials and family members gathered at Brooklyn's Emmanuel Baptist Church in a private service for Carey Gabay, 43, who was struck in the head at a pre-dawn outdoor celebration on Sept. 7 before the annual West Indian Day parade, an event plagued by violence in recent years. "His death was one of the most tragic, pointless examples of the rampant violence that is spreading like a cancer through our society, especially in our poorer communities and especially in our communities of color," Cuomo said. |
Fiat Chrysler U.S. labor deal meets opposition in early voting Posted: 26 Sep 2015 11:32 AM PDT A proposed four-year labor agreement between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and the United Auto Workers union encountered strong opposition from rank-and-file union members in early ratification voting. Final results of voting at 37 U.S. UAW local union halls aren't expected until the middle of next week, and the contract could still win enough support from Fiat Chrysler's 40,000 UAW-represented workers to go into effect. Some 77 percent of production workers voted "no" at a large UAW local in Kokomo, Indiana that has more than 5,000 workers, the Detroit Free Press reported on Saturday. |

VW scandal exposes cozy ties between industry and Berlin Posted: 26 Sep 2015 01:15 PM PDT By Noah Barkin BERLIN (Reuters) - Angela Merkel learned early in her political career that taking on the German car industry carries risks. It was the spring of 1995 and the newly appointed environment minister was trying to convince her cabinet colleagues to back a bold new set of anti-smog rules that included tougher speed limits and summer driving bans. Wissmann's argument won the day, reducing Merkel to tears, according to a 2010 biography by Gerd Langguth. |
