‘Transgender’ dictionary lookups surge after Justice Department letter to schools Posted: 13 May 2016 01:43 PM PDT Transgender rights have become a national conversation topic since North Carolina passed its controversial "bathroom bill," and search data reveals that many Americans may be struggling to learn more about LGBT issues and understand what being transgender means. Merriam-Webster revealed that searches for "transgender" in its online dictionary surged 630 percent after the Obama administration on Friday sent an open letter to public schools across the country with guidelines for supporting transgender students. The letter, signed by officials from the U.S. Justice and Education Departments, calls for public schools to allow transgender students to use the restrooms that align with their gender identities. |
The British conservative trying to make American politics more human Posted: 13 May 2016 12:32 PM PDT As a close adviser to British Prime Minister David Cameron, Steve Hilton helped modernize and reform the U.K.'s modern Conservative Party. In a newly released book, he argues for the radical decentralization of government power and warns of the negative societal impacts of giant conglomerates. |
States dig in against directive on transgender bathroom use Posted: 13 May 2016 03:47 PM PDT Politicians in Texas, Arkansas and elsewhere vowed defiance — and other conservative states could follow suit — after the Obama administration told public schools across the U.S. on Friday to let transgender students use the bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity. The federal government's guidance was met with tearful praise from parents of transgender students. "It's heartbreaking that these kids are losing their lives because they can't be accepted," Hope Tyler, who has a transgender son at a Raleigh high school, said in reference to suicides among transgender people. |
‘It was not me’: Donald Trump denies being own publicist in surreal audio recording from 1991 Posted: 13 May 2016 05:44 AM PDT Donald Trump bristled during a Friday interview when he was asked about a recently unearthed audio recording of him allegedly discussing his own love life in third-person. Earlier Friday, the Washington Post published a surreal, 14-minute phone call from 1991 between a man who said his name was John Miller — and who sounds like Trump — discussing Trump's dating life. "He gets called by everybody in the book in terms of women," the man says in the recording, which was with Sue Carswell, a reporter at People magazine. |
Navy Reviews What Procedures Might Need to Be Improved After Three Deaths of SEAL Trainees Posted: 13 May 2016 02:30 PM PDT The Navy is reviewing procedures for keeping track of trainees who do not make it through the grueling course to become SEALs in the wake of three deaths involving sailors who participated in the last four training classes, military officials said. Two of the deaths involved trainees who had recently not made it through BUDS -- Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL -- training that selects the sailors who will join the elite special operations unit. In April, Seaman Daniel DelBianco, 23, committed suicide after he did not make it through "hell week," the intense week-long climax to BUDS during which prospective SEALs endure extreme sleep deprivation and tough physical conditions to see if they can carry out their military training under exhausting conditions. |
Report: Flint's high water bills may double in next 5 years Posted: 13 May 2016 01:44 PM PDT LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A report released Friday suggests that Flint residents' pricey water bills could double in the next five years due to several factors, even though the state has pledged aid amid the city's ongoing lead-tainted water crisis. |
House, Senate hope to craft quick anti-drug abuse compromise Posted: 13 May 2016 08:18 AM PDT Congress is ready to start crafting compromise legislation addressing the nation's opioid abuse crisis, which should be an easier lift than other issues facing lawmakers. The House overwhelmingly approved 18 bills this week setting up federal grants and taking other steps to battle the drug epidemic, and prepared Friday to begin negotiations on a final package with the Senate. "It's a very important start, but we need dollars, we need statutory changes and we need sustained focus and attention," said Robert Morrison, executive director of the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors. |
U.S. tells schools to give transgender students bathroom rights Posted: 13 May 2016 04:50 PM PDT By Megan Cassella WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration told U.S. public schools on Friday that transgender students must be allowed to use the bathroom of their choice, upsetting Republicans and raising the likelihood of fights over federal funding and legal authority. Conservatives pushed back against the administration's non-binding guidance to schools, the latest battleground in the issue of rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said the guidance "must be challenged." "If President Obama thinks he can bully Texas schools into allowing men to have open access to girls in bathrooms, he better prepare for yet another legal fight," Paxton, a Tea Party champion, said in a statement. |
Donald Trump Refuses to Reveal His Tax Rate: 'It's None of Your Business' Posted: 13 May 2016 04:32 AM PDT Trump said he will "gladly" release his tax returns once an audit is complete. |
House OKs bipartisan drug abuse bills, but Dems want money Posted: 12 May 2016 06:30 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has approved a mountain of bills addressing the nation's opioid abuse crisis, fueled by lawmakers' bipartisan craving for election-year action on the deadly epidemic. Yet the measures are leaving anti-drug advocates underwhelmed, and Congress won't decide till later how much money it's willing to provide. |
Facebook launches probe into report of political bias Posted: 13 May 2016 12:49 PM PDT Facebook Inc , the social networking powerhouse, is conducting a full investigation into allegations of political bias, Chairman and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said. Kremlin: Olympic doping allegations 'treacherous slander' Posted: 13 May 2016 09:18 AM PDT By Dmitry Solovyov and Andrew Osborn MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Kremlin dismissed allegations that Russia had run a sophisticated doping programme at the last winter Olympics as treacherous slander on Friday, calling the ex-head of the country's anti-doping laboratory "a turncoat." Two Russian winter sportsmen named as cheats by Grigory Rodchenkov, the former lab chief who has since fled to the United States, also denied wrongdoing, saying the charges were part of a campaign to besmirch the name of Russian sport. Russia, already battling to overturn a ban on its athletes taking part in this year's Rio summer Olympics, has been thrown on the defensive after a New York Times report cited Rodchenkov as saying he ran a doping programme at the 2014 Sochi winter Olympics which included at least 15 medal winners. |
U.S. Navy fires commander of sailors who were held by Iran Posted: 12 May 2016 05:09 PM PDT The U.S. Navy said on Thursday that it had fired the commander of the 10 American sailors who wandered into Iranian territorial waters in the Gulf in January and were briefly held by Iran in an incident that risked becoming an international crisis. The Navy said in a statement that it had lost confidence in Commander Eric Rasch, who was the executive officer of the coastal riverine squadron that included the 10 sailors. Rasch became the first person to be publicly singled out after a preliminary investigation into the incident that occurred near Farsi Island in the Gulf. |
