Missing yoga teacher found alive two weeks after disappearing in Hawaii forest Posted: 25 May 2019 02:57 AM PDT A yoga instructor who had been missing in a Hawaiian forest for more than two weeks has been found alive.Amanda Eller, 35, was last seen early on the morning of 8 May as she set off on a hike in the Makawao Forest Reserve trail on Maui island.Rescuers found her safe and in remarkably good condition after a helicopter team spotted her waving from the stream bed of a ravine around 5pm on Friday.Ms Eller's friends and volunteers who joined the 17-day search said she had lost her shoes in the jungle and was suffering from sunburn, but otherwise had no other injuries. The physical therapist had survived on water and local plants, one said."She was very alert, she knew her father's phone number, she knew who she was, where she was, knew exactly how long she had been out there," her friend Chris Berquist told ABC News. "I've never felt something quite that overpowering."Ms Eller was able to call her father from the helicopter that lifted her out of the ravine and took her to Maui Memorial Hospital to be checked over. The woman's family – who had feared she could have been "intercepted" by someone after she disappeared – had raised the reward for finding her from $10,000 to $50,000 only hours before she was found.Hundreds of volunteers, including many experienced hikers, had joined the effort to locate the missing yoga teacher – originally from the US state of Maryland but living and working in Hawaii. Police dogs and drones had been used to scour the forest.Ms Eller was last seen by her boyfriend Benjamin Konkol before she set off on a morning hike without her phone. He told ABC News last week that evidence suggested "she's definitely still here, we just haven't found her yet".Her mother Julia said: "I do firmly believe that Amanda is still alive, but occasionally those doubts creep in and I try to dispel them as I can."Hawaiian authorities also released surveillance footage last week showing Ms Eller at the Ha'iku Post Office and a local store on the morning she went missing. Police found her white Toyota RAV4 in the parking lot of the forest trail soon after she was declared missing.Although it is not yet known how she came to get stuck in the ravine, Mr Berquist said the spot where she was finally found was "way off the beaten track".He said: "She was not injured. She has a little bit of exposure from the sun, a little bit of sunburn. She lost her shoes a few days in. But no injuries." |

Hezbollah warns US plan could naturalise Palestinian diaspora Posted: 25 May 2019 12:22 PM PDT The head of Lebanon's Shiite movement Hezbollah warned Saturday that a long-delayed US peace plan could see Palestinian refugees permanently settled in host countries across the region. Speaking days after the US announced a May conference in Bahrain to lay out economic aspects of its long-awaited Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah warned of an "ominous deal aimed at eliminating the Palestinian cause". The right of return for more than 700,000 refugees who were expelled or fled during the creation of the State of Israel in the late 1940s -- and their millions of descendants -- is a key pillar of the Palestinian cause. |

Violence and disruption against abortion clinics at highest rates since 1999 Posted: 25 May 2019 09:16 AM PDT Violence and disruption against abortion clinics in the US increased to its highest levels since the 1990s last year, a report by the National Abortion Federation has found. The increase in violence was attributed, at least in part, to president Donald Trump and his administration's rhetoric. The report noted a significant increase in obstruction, vandalism, and trespassing, with 1,135 incidents of trespassing recorded in 2018 - the most since the NAF began tracking the crime in 1999.There were also 3,038 instances of obstruction, a 78 per cent increase compared to the previous year, and nearly 100,000 instances of picketing."Anti-choice individuals and groups have been emboldened by the rhetoric of president Trump, vice president Pence, and other elected officials and we are seeing this play out in more instances of activities meant to intimidate abortion providers and disrupt patient services," said Dr Katherine Hancock Ragsdale, who serves as interim president and CEO of NAF.She added: "Demonising health care providers and women who rely on them for abortion care has become one of the go-to tactics for anti-choice politicians. Those lies have consequences and it is not the anti-choice politicians who are facing those consequences; it is those who are denied abortion care and the providers targeted by threats, harassment, and violence who are. It is time for the demonizing of abortion providers and their patients to end."Given the political climate and the increase in hate incidents throughout the country, it is more important than ever that law enforcement and prosecutors appropriately respond to anti-abortion criminal activity."The study did note a decrease in stalking, burglary, assault, and battery against abortion providers. It comes during a fresh wave of anti-abortion legislation such as the Alabama abortion ban, which is currently being contested in a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood, and "heartbeat bills" which ban elective abortion after a foetal heartbeat is detectable. As a foetal heartbeat is first detectable at six weeks - a point where many pregnant people may not even know they are pregnant - these initiatives are seen as a back-door abortion ban and are also being contested in court. Politicians in support of banning abortion hope these cases will rise to the Supreme Court of the United States and lead to an overturning of Roe V Wade, which set the precedent for elective abortion until the end of the second trimester in the US. |
The Glock 36: A Really Big Gun in a Small Package Posted: 24 May 2019 08:00 PM PDT Until recently, the most common compact .45 caliber handgun was of a type known as the Officer's model. A derivative of the 1911A1 Government, in 2011 it was finally superseded by an even lighter pistol—the Glock 36. Chambered in .45 ACP and following the same winning formula as previous Glocks, the model 36 could be the best compact single stack .45 on the market today. The 1911 .45 caliber pistol, designed by John Moses Browning, was one of the most successful pistols of all time. Adopted by the U.S. Armed Forces in time for World War I, it served on through World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the waning years of the Cold War. The slab-sided, all-steel pistol was large, heavy, and imposing, but it was also durable and could last for decades. Colt's Manufacturing subsequently developed and released a smaller and lighter version, the Colt Commander, but it failed to gain traction to replace the original 1911A1. |

Simulator training remains 'possible option' for Boeing 737 MAX pilots in Canada Posted: 23 May 2019 08:15 PM PDT Simulator training remains a "possible option" for Canadian Boeing 737 MAX pilots, but it's too early to say whether it would be mandatory, a Transport Canada official said on Thursday night, further distancing the regulator from previous remarks by the country's transport minister. "It would be premature not seeing what Boeing has fully proposed yet to determine if simulator training will in fact be included," said Nicholas Robinson, the regulator's director general, civil aviation, told reporters on a conference call following a meeting of global regulators in Texas. Canada's Transport Minister Marc Garneau called in April for pilots to received simulator training for Boeing's software fix. |

Britain will fight the global ‘rollback' of women's rights, says UK development minister Posted: 23 May 2019 10:03 PM PDT The new international development minister will use a speech in Norway today to make it clear that Britain will not follow America and "rollback" access to abortions and other reproductive health services. Baroness Sugg, a 42-year-old former operations chief to David Cameron, will tell delegates at a conference on gender in Oslo that the UK must "stand strongly against the rollback of women's rights." The move follows a series of announcements effectively banning abortions in Alabama and Georgia, while the Trump administration's "global gag rule" is starving charities of funding around the world. And at the United Nations in April, a clause referencing access to reproductive health was removed in a resolution condemning sexual violence because of the United States. Trump's administration opposed the statement because they said the wording implied support for abortions. "We must also stand strongly against the rollback of women's rights," Baroness Sugg will tell the audience. "That's why I'm proud UK aid will continue to champion, defend and support access to life-saving sexual and reproductive health services for the world's poorest women and girls and those affected by humanitarian crises." A Marie Stopes nurse in Ghana delivers a community family planning lecture Credit: Simon Townsley Access to reproductive rights has been a major battleground in the area of development, despite evidence which shows that family planning stabilises population growth rates, empowers women and helps stem the spread of diseases like HIV. "The current politics of polarization can sometimes lead to adverse effects on the fight for women's rights," Natalia Kanem executive director of UNFPA, told The Telegraph. In America, conservative forces have the ear of the Trump administration. The Mexico City policy, known as the "global gag rule", has been introduced by every Republican president since Ronald Reagan, but Trump has dramatically expanded its scope. The policy effectively prevents any charity which relies on US funding from offering or even advising on termination. Harnessing Africa's baby boom | Women seize power over their fertility – and future The reach is enormous – the global gag applies to roughly $8.8 billion of funding. Previous versions of the policy placed restrictions on some $575 million. While this money is still spent on global health, it shifts funding away from some of the most effective initiatives to others such as faith based groups opposed to abortions. "I don't think anyone was taken by surprise that President Trump reintroduced the global gag rule, but we were surprised by the massive expansion," said Luisa Orza, HIV and gender lead at Frontline AIDS, an organisation which has never previously been impacted by the gag policy. Access to contraception "There's huge alarm building as suddenly organisations are being asked to compromise their work or sacrifice potential funding," she said. "We made the decision as an organisation that we don't want to have our work on sexual health and reproductive health compromised. "We really value the UK government's ongoing commitment to women's and girls' rights and empowerment, including on sexual and reproductive health. They have been unequivocal on their stance on safe abortion." Many leading charities have lost huge chunks of funding – despite countries such as Denmark, Canada, Belgium and Sweden stepping up. Marie Stopes International (MSI), one of the world's largest family planning organisations, lost 17 per cent of their funding overnight when the policy came into force in 2017. Abortion laws around the world "But the impact will be far more than financial," Sarah Shaw, head of advocacy at MSI, told The Telegraph. "If a girl does not have access to reproductive health services at the crucial moment that can have a lifelong on effect. "And people who believe women should not have access to these services are having their opinions validated by the leader of the free world. There's a chilling effect that I think will be really hard to recover from," she added. The UK government has a strong record supporting family planning and abortion rights at home and abroad but a near-total ban on termination remains in Northern Ireland. Newsletter promotion - global health security - end of article "The roll-back on reproductive rights in the US is happening at a terrifyingly rapid rate," said Grainne Teggart, Amnesty UK's Northern Ireland campaign manager. "We should be outraged by this but... women in Northern Ireland are subjected to one of the most severe abortion bans in the world." In her speech in Oslo at the first UN conference on ending sexual and gender-based violence in humanitarian crises, Baroness Sugg will also announce £7 million to support women in Syria. The money will be used to train midwives and health workers to treat and care for survivors of sexual violence and support access to family planning. Life in prison for 'evil' loner who kidnapped US teen, killed parents Posted: 24 May 2019 02:28 PM PDT Calling him the "embodiment of evil," a US judge on Friday sentenced a 21-year-old man to life in prison for murdering a couple in their home in order to kidnap their 13-year-old daughter. Jake Patterson pleaded guilty in March to first degree murder and kidnapping for shooting dead James and Denise Closs in their rural Wisconsin home last October. In handing down the maximum sentence of life without parole, Judge James Babler rejected defense attorneys' pleas for the possibility of parole in several decades' time. |

Trump deploys 1,500 soldiers to Middle East after insisting more troops were unnecessary Posted: 24 May 2019 02:15 PM PDT The US will order more troops to the Middle East, Donald Trump has said, despite just a day earlier saying he thought further deployments in the region were unnecessary.Mr Trump said around 1,500 troops would be sent amid rising tensions with Iran. Congressional aides confirmed that Congress was notified of the new plan before it was announced. "We want to have protection. The Middle East, we're going to be sending a relatively small number of troops," Mr Trump told reporters at the White House before boarding a plane for Japan. "Mostly protective. Some very talented people are going to the Middle East right now. And we'll see how – we'll see what happens."A defence official later claimed that the actual number of incoming troops was 900, which will be to added to 600 troops whose deployment in the region will be extended. The announcement comes at the end of a week in which several numbers were floated for troop increases in the region. On Thursday, the acting defense secretary, Patrick Shanahan, denied reports that between 5,000 to 10,000 US troops could be sent to defend against the potential threat from Iran. "There is no 10,000, there's no 5,000, and that's not accurate," he told reporters.Representative Adam Smith, who serves as the House Armed Services Committee Chairman, issued a statement calling the increase in troops an "unsettling" move."Without a clearly articulated strategy, adding more personnel and mission systems seems unwise, and appears to be a blatant and heavy-handed move to further escalate tensions with Iran," Mr Smith said."I look forward to hearing from Acting Defense Secretary Shanahan how this decision complements a broader strategy in the region, which focuses on de-escalation and diplomacy first," his statement continued. |
Audi to swap out TT for all-electric model Posted: 24 May 2019 07:21 AM PDT Audi's CFO has indicated that the company is "shedding old baggage," meaning it will be discontinuing the TT coupe to replace it with a BEV, according to a Bloomberg report. As reported by Bloomberg Thursday, Audi will be discontinuing the TT coupe and possibly the R8 as well in order to make space in the portfolio for new fully-electric models. The battery powertrain push comes as a result of the company's initiative to launch 20 fully-electric vehicles by 2025, a point when sales of electric cars both hybrid and 100% electric are expected to make up to 40% of automobile deliveries. |

U.S. oil drillers cut rigs for third week in a row -Baker Hughes Posted: 24 May 2019 10:03 AM PDT U.S. energy firms this week reduced the number of oil rigs operating for a third week in a row as weaker oil prices encourage drillers to follow through on plans to cut spending. Drillers cut five oil rigs in the week to May 24, bringing the total count down to 797, the lowest since March 2018, General Electric Co's Baker Hughes energy services firm said in its closely followed report on Friday. The rig count, an early indicator of future output, has declined over the past five months as independent exploration and production companies cut spending on new drilling as they focus more on earnings growth instead of increased output. |

Pelosi walks fine line between defying Trump and resisting impeachment Posted: 23 May 2019 10:00 PM PDT Despite calls from her caucus, the speaker of the House has made the case that Congress is not yet in place to impeach the president Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House, has proven uniquely capable with getting under Donald Trump's skin. Photograph: J Scott Applewhite/APWhen Nancy Pelosi reclaimed the speaker's gavel in January, Donald Trump had led the US into what would become the longest government shutdown in its history."I'm the mother of five, grandmother of nine," Pelosi wryly told reporters amid the impasse. "I know a temper tantrum when I see one."The statement was an indictment of Trump's decision to shut down the government over funding for a border wall – and indicative of how Pelosi intended to go toe-to-toe with a president who, in two years, has largely governed on his own terms.Five months into leading the House majority, Pelosi, who for a second time is serving as the highest-ranking elected woman in the country, has proven uniquely capable of getting under Trump's skin. But, as she defies the president and maintains a steady hand over her own caucus, Pelosi has been forced to contend with growing Democratic calls for impeachment. And as the battle between Trump and Democrats in Congress soars to new heights, some wonder how long the veteran California lawmaker can hold the line."I don't envy the position that she's in right now," said Jim Manley, who served as an aide to former House majority leader Harry Reid and the late senator Ted Kennedy."Despite all that she's done to keep the caucus in line, the president of the United States keeps on adding fuel to the fire that's the impeachment process."Although polling has shown that a majority of Americans do not want Congress to impeach Trump, the administration's unprecedented refusal to comply with any subpoenas issued by Democratic investigators in Congress have left some in the party questioning their options. As of now, 25 House Democrats are publicly in favor of impeachment; others have indicated impeachment proceedings might be the only way to compel the White House to hand over information to congressional investigators.Pelosi has openly acknowledged she believes Trump's actions amounted to obstruction, but made the case that Congress is not yet in a place to impeach the president.Addressing her caucus at a closed-door meeting on Thursday, Pelosi's message was clear: Trump, she argued, was trying to goad Democrats into launching impeachment proceedings in a bid to seize on a politically divisive issue."Understand this: he wants to be impeached," she said, according to a Democratic aide. "This is time for – long overdue time – for a major intervention on this person.""His actions are villainous to the constitution of the United States."This week, the House speaker was once again unbowed in the face of Trump's pressure tactics amid a contentious showdown over congressional investigations into his conduct.Incensed by Pelosi's suggestion that he had "engaged in a cover-up", Trump on Wednesday stormed out of a meeting with Democratic leaders on infrastructure policy. Speaking from the White House Rose Garden, Trump vowed not to work with Democrats in Congress unless they ceased all inquiries concerning him and his administration. It was clear Pelosi's words had triggered Trump, who on Thursday referred to the House speaker as "crazy Nancy" and said she was "a mess"."She's not the same person. She's lost it," he said."The president has structured his adult life and career so he rarely deals with a peer or near-peer who is female," said Michael Steel, a former aide to the ex-House speaker John Boehner. "And provoking the president in this way is very good for Speaker Pelosi's popularity within her own caucus."I think she has a keen sense of her own place in history, a high regard for her own capabilities combined with a very good understanding of where her caucus is generally." |
Alabama sued over law which bans abortion even in cases of rape and incest Posted: 24 May 2019 08:15 AM PDT Alabama is being sued over a law which would ban nearly all abortions in the state, even in cases of rape and incest. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Planned Parenthood filed the lawsuit on behalf of abortion providers, who have asked a US federal judge to block the legislation. The law, which was signed by governor Kay Ivey last week, would make performing an abortion at any stage of pregnancy a crime punishable by up to life in prison for the provider. The only exception would be when the woman's health is at serious risk.Unless blocked by a judge, the law is set to come into effect in November."Make no mistake, abortion remains - and will remain - safe and legal in Alabama. With this lawsuit, we are seeking a court order to make sure this law never takes effect," said Randall Marshall, executive director of the ACLU of Alabama. The lawsuit says the criminalising of abortion is clearly unconstitutional and would harm women by forcing them to continue pregnancies against their will."For over 46 years, since the Supreme Court decided Roe vs Wade, US law has recognised the fundamental constitutional right to make the profoundly important and personal decision whether or not to terminate a pregnancy," the lawsuit reads. The plaintiffs in the case are the three Alabama clinics that perform abortions, Planned Parenthood and Dr Yashica Robinson, an obstetrician who also provides abortions at a Huntsville clinic.Emboldened by new conservatives on the Supreme Court, Alabama is part of a wave of conservative states seeking to mount new legal challenges to Roe vs Wade, the 1973 landmark Supreme Court decision that legalised abortion nationwide.Governors in Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio and Georgia have approved bans on abortion once a foetal heartbeat is detected, which can happen as early as the sixth week of pregnancy.None of the laws have taken effect and all are expected to be blocked by the courts as the legal challenges play out with an ultimate eye on the Supreme Court.Supporters of the Alabama law have said they expected a lawsuit and expected to initially lose in court, but they hope the appeal could eventually land before the Supreme Court."My goal with this bill, and I think all of our goals, is to have Roe vs Wade turned over and that decision ability sent back to the states," Republican representative Terri Collins, the bill's sponsor, said when it passed last week.Additional reporting by AP |

Pelosi’s Pragmatism on Impeachment May Backfire Posted: 24 May 2019 03:00 AM PDT Take House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who knows that most Democratic voters want President Donald Trump to be impeached but that the electorate as a whole does not. If you check out the Constitution, you'll find that self-impeaching is...not really a thing. |

Irish regulator opens first privacy probe into Google Posted: 24 May 2019 01:04 AM PDT The probe was the result of a number of submissions against the company, the Irish Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) said, including from privacy-focused web browser Brave, which complained last year that Google and other digital advertising firms were playing fast and loose with people's data. Brave argued that when a person visits a website, intimate personal data that describes them and what they are doing online is broadcast to tens or hundreds of companies without their knowledge in order to auction and place targeted adverts. "A statutory inquiry pursuant to section 110 of the Data Protection Act 2018 has been commenced in respect of Google Ireland Limited's processing of personal data in the context of its online Ad Exchange," the Irish DPC said in a statement. |
One U.S. Battleship Fired 65,000 .50 Caliber Rounds During Pearl Harbor Posted: 24 May 2019 06:00 PM PDT Wearing his dungarees, Winsett ran the 50 yards back to the ship and his battle station, a .50-caliber machine gun facing toward the bow on the starboard side. He still believed it was just "another drill." As soon as the stations were manned, Condition "YOKE" (Enemy Is Probable) was set by Captain C.M. Cooke, Jr.On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, Gunner's Mate Russell Winsett, 19, awoke at 5 am as he did most mornings. As he went topside he could see that the weather was like almost every December day in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, sunny blue skies with a few white puffy clouds. This was a day Winsett was looking forward to. He thought to himself, "It's gonna be a beautiful day to visit the island with my cousin, his wife, and three kids." Winsett had met his relative William Pope several months earlier when his family wrote and told him that he had a distant cousin also stationed at Pearl Harbor. Winsett had found the ship William was serving on, contacted him, and they met for a short visit. The next day his cousin went on a two-month cruise. Winsett was looking forward to reconnecting with his family member and getting to meet his wife and kids while taking in the sights of Hawaii. It was a long way from home for this Alabama farm boy. |

China slams US 'lies' about Huawei's government ties Posted: 24 May 2019 07:15 AM PDT China ramped up a war of words with the United States over Huawei on Friday, accusing Washington of spreading "lies" about the telecom giant thrust to the centre of their trade war. The fiery response came hours after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rejected Huawei's denials that the Chinese company works with the Communist government. The Trump administration has infuriated Beijing by blacklisting the smartphone and telecommunications company over worries that China uses it as a tool for espionage, and allegations of breaking sanctions on Iran. |
