'Dreamers' turn their backs on Trump’s immigration policy Posted: 30 Jan 2018 09:28 PM PST The small group of immigrants who gathered for a State of the Union watch party in Queens Tuesday night didn't technically plan on watching the president speak. "When he starts talking, we're going to turn our backs to the screen," explained Antonio Alacaron, a DACA recipient and immigration youth organizer at Make the Road New York, a nonprofit that advocates for immigrant rights and Latino communities. "This is insane," Alacaron said softly, shaking his head as Trump talked about his proposed plan to create a 12-year pathway to citizenship for "1.8 million illegal immigrants who were brought here by their parents at a young age," in exchange for "building a great wall on the southern border" and other increased security measures. |

The arrests came after the Turkish Medical Association (TTB), which represents 80 percent of the country's physicians, issued a statement saying that conflicts lead to "irreparable problems" and that "war is a man-made public health problem". The TTB ended its statement on Wednesday with the words: "No to war, peace right now". |

Russia's Putin: U.S. 'oligarch list' is an unfriendly act Posted: 30 Jan 2018 04:41 AM PST President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday the release of a U.S. list of Russian businessmen close to the Kremlin was an unfriendly act, but Moscow did not currently plan to retaliate. The U.S. Treasury Department named major Russian businessmen in a so-called "oligarchs' list" which was released earlier on Tuesday. It will complicate the difficult situation Russian-American relations are already in, and of course harm international relations as a whole," Putin said. |

Police sealed off parts of the busy Wan Chai district and ferry services crossing the Victoria Harbour were suspended as experts worked to unearth the explosive, an operation that would likely continue overnight. The bomb was found at the same construction site along the harbour front as a 450-kilogram explosive that was successfully defused on Saturday. |

Iranian opposition cleric accuses Khamenei of abuse of power Posted: 30 Jan 2018 05:09 AM PST By Bozorgmehr Sharafedin LONDON (Reuters) - Instead of blaming others Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei should take responsibility for Iran's economic and political shortcomings, an opposition leader under house arrest said in a letter published on Tuesday. In rare public criticism of Khamenei, Mehdi Karroubi accused Iran's hardline top authority of abusing power and urged him to change the way he runs the Islamic Republic before it is too late. "You have been Iran's top leader for three decades, but still speak like an opposition," Karroubi said in an open letter to Khamenei published on Saham News, the official website of his reformist political party. |

The participants also agreed to set up a committee to rewrite the Syrian constitution at the conference, which much of the opposition said aimed to serve the interests of President Bashar al-Assad and his close ally, Moscow. A final statement said Syrians must decide their future through elections, but did not say whether Syrian refugees would be allowed to take part, something sought by Assad's opponents and Western states. |
