The U.S. Navy's New Attack Submarine: The Most 'Stealth' Sub Ever? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 08:00 PM PDT The technical elements of undersea command and control, quite naturally, are being engineered with a mind to an expected increased use of underwater drones. The Navy is now moving quickly with efforts to build an entire new fleet of UUVs able to destroy mines, conduct lower risk forward surveillance, deliver supplies or even fire weapons with a "human-in-the-loop." Capt. Pete Small, the Program Manager for Unmanned Maritime Systems, addressed this phenomenon at Sea Air Space and said the service's now in development Orca XLUUV - Extra Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicle - is being configured to fire torpedoes. The Navy has begun work on a new generation of attack submarines with never-before-seen weapons, quieting technology, undersea attack drones, sonar and communications networking… to emerge at some point over the next 10 years or more. Will it be the stealthiest, most lethal attack submarine ever to exist? That ….is the Navy plan.Plans for the new boats, referred to as a new fleet of Block VI Virginia Class-Attack Attack-class submarines, include launching long-range precision strikes, delivering Special Operations Forces on secret high-risk attack missions, conducting ISR missions, networking with platforms and -- perhaps of greatest significance - operating undetected in high-threat waters. |
Apple leaves iTunes behind as it harmonizes software Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:16 PM PDT San José (United States) (AFP) - Apple on Monday announced enhanced privacy features as it harmonized software across its lineup of devices, while dropping its groundbreaking iTunes store as it gears up for new kinds of digital content. Apple chief Tim Cook and other executives focused on privacy features as they unveiled software improvements for iPhones, iPads, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Mac computers at the technology giant's annual gathering of developers in Silicon Valley. "The future of iTunes is not one app, it's three," said Apple senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi. |

House Judiciary Committee Launches Antitrust Investigation of Tech Giants Posted: 03 Jun 2019 01:59 PM PDT Bill ClarkThe House Judiciary Committee is launching an antitrust investigation into major tech companies like Google and Amazon, moving Congress closer to legislative action against the tech giants. "This is really about 'how do we get competition back in this space?'" Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), who will lead the investigation as head of the antitrust subcommittee, told reporters on Monday. The antitrust investigation represents a new headache for the tech giants, which have faced increased congressional pressure over the past two years. The investigation will include depositions, public hearings, and document requests, according to Cicilline. The investigation will also likely feature hearing with the CEOs of the major tech companies, while offering private interviews for witnesses worried that the tech giants would go after them."There can be economic retaliation and real costs for people that will come forward," Cicicilline said. The committee will likely produce a report and recommendations, according to Cicilline, who hopes to get some kind of legislative action finished before the congressional session ends in January 2021."People seem to have forgotten that there's a reason that we have the antitrust statute," Cicilline said. Users Flee Facebook Over Privacy Concerns. Facebook's Solution? All-Seeing Eye.While Cicilline claimed the investigation isn't about specific companies, Amazon, Apple, Google, and Facebook have already been notified by the committee. Cicilline highlighted Google's control of 90 percent of search engine use and Amazon's control of half of online commerce as potential topics for investigation. Cicilline also cited Twitter's 2017 decision to shut down short-form video app Vine as a move that could have hurt consumer choice. Cicilline also repeatedly slammed Facebook, describing the company as "engaged in pretty bad conduct" and labelling it a "repeat offender" for its data privacy issues and the proliferation of political misinformation on the platform. "These large technology platforms — particularly Facebook — cannot be trusted to regulate itself," Cicilline said. The tech companies did not respond to requests for comment. In the past, they have given political donations to the members of the committee now tasked with investigating them. Fifteen of the committee's Democrats received a combined $152,000 last cycle from the political action committees of Google, Facebook, and Amazon (unlike those three, Apple does not have a corporate PAC). Those same companies donated $74,000 to ten Judiciary Republicans last cycle.Massive Google Outage Turned Smart Homes Into ZombiesCicilline said Congress and regulators had initially been reluctant to interfere with tech giants out of fear of stifling technological innovations — an approach he wants to change."I think what we've learned is that actually there are some pretty serious dangers that are presented with the bigness of these online platforms," Cicilline said. According to Cicilline, the Judiciary investigation will also cover Google and Facebook's massive shares of digital ad spending, which has drastically reduced ad sales for media companies. "This is about whether or not our democracy will survive, fundamentally," Cicilline said. The Judiciary announcement comes as the Justice Department reportedly prepares an antitrust investigation into Google and the Federal Trade Commission receives jurisdiction over Facebook for its own potential antitrust case. But Cicilline said he didn't trust the Justice Department or the Federal Trade Commission to adequately handle antitrust issues during the Trump administration. "I don't have a lot of confidence, frankly, that these agencies will get the job done," Cicilline said. While House Republicans have held hearings on allegations that tech giants have been biased against Republicans, Cicilline said his investigation wouldn't cover those claims. Cicilline complained that one hearing starring pro-Trump commentators "Diamond & Silk," which occurred when Republicans ran the judiciary committee, "made you feel like you were in a Saturday Night Live skit.""I don't think there's any evidence to support the claim that there's anti-conservative bias at all," Cicilline said. What Exactly Is Bishop Tobin Apologizing For? Posted: 04 Jun 2019 11:51 AM PDT I have yet to hear a satisfying rationale for why people who insist that religion is a series of myths used to manipulate the American underclass are simultaneously qualified to lecture me about the authentic values of Jesus of Nazareth. Silly Christian believer! Don't you know that Jesus Christ — who probably didn't exist and most certainly wasn't divine — would have been on the front lines of smashing the patriarchy? The typical clique of secularists moonlighting as Christian exegetes was out in force this weekend, attacking Bishop Thomas Tobin for his unexceptional recitation of an article of the Catholic Church's bimillennial teaching on sexual ethics. His tweet set the Internet ablaze on Saturday, with Twitter users by the tens of thousands rallying to deride the Catholic prelate over the following statement: "A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ 'Pride Month' events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for children."The last line of his tweet, which invoked concerns about the safety of children, was met with predictable accusations of hypocrisy. On the merits, however, is he wrong? Why should children be subjected to any profligate display of sexuality, homosexual or otherwise?Bishop Tobin later apologized, stating that he was upset to learn that his "comments . . . about Pride Month have turned out to be so controversial in our community, and offensive to some, especially the gay community. That certainly was not my intention, but I understand why a good number of individuals have taken offense."Are members of the Church hierarchy now obligated to apologize publicly for reiterating the sexual ethics subscribed to by countless canonized saints?Tobin's original statement on the Church's dogma on homosexuality and his subsequent apology prompted Boston Globe columnist Kevin Cullen to write a response column with the subtle headline "If Donald Trump were a bishop, he'd be named Tom Tobin."Kevin Cullen grants the reader unique access to the nuanced internal hermeneutic he used to make sense of the bishop's remarks:> My first reaction was, "Jesus, what was he thinking?"> > My second reaction was, "What's Jesus thinking?"> > And I'm thinking Jesus is thinking, "Why is this clown walking around claiming to represent me?"After using the first permutation of his exegetical exercise to take the Lord's name in vain, Cullen asked himself what the Lord of the Universe would think of Bishop Tobin and his statement. After deciding that his own opinion was a better window into the mind of Christ than the unchanging moral dicta of the Church that He founded, Cullen reached a mature terminus by calling the ordained successor to the apostles a "clown."Jesus would hate Bishop Tobin!Forget the old debates over the supposedly low Christology of Mark versus the high Christology of John — Cullen's Jesus is a '60s radical whose good news was meant primarily not for the poor but for "nonconformists" and "nerds":> Jesus loved outsiders and nonconformists. He walked with lepers, prostitutes, and nerds. He embraced anyone and everyone, especially the scorned and the devalued. And gay and transgendered people continue to be scorned and devalued by prominent citizens like the bishop of Providence.Jesus came to call pot-smoking hipsters and World of Warcraft devotees!Christ did indeed love and embrace "anyone and everyone" (and this includes, to the extent that they existed in first-century Judea, Galilee, and environs, "nerds.") But His love never prevented Him from insisting that people change their behavior. To quote an example that Cullen is no doubt familiar with, here is Christ's interaction with a rich young man in Saint Mark's Gospel (emphasis mine):> And Jesus looking on him, loved him, and said to him: One thing is wanting unto thee: go, sell whatever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.Christ's love is grounded not in license but in truth; in the famous case of the rich young man, even as Jesus "loved him," He still insisted that the man go and make a radically difficult decision to forgo temporal pleasure (could you imagine selling "whatever thou hast?") for the Kingdom of God.The bishop's statement is self-evidently correct. It is an unremarkable statement of fact that "Catholic faith and morals," in the bishop's wording, have been unanimous and unambiguous on the question of sexual ethics since the very first days of the Church. One is free to reject the validity of those values, but the bishop's statement, inasmuch as it plainly reflects the unchanging position of the Catholic Church on same-sex sexual behavior, should be beyond dispute. If you think the Church is wrong, say so. If you think that Jesus of Nazareth was an obscure first-century figure whose death was an ignominious event that sparked a group of schizophrenic followers to fabricate a resurrection story to assuage their consciences, say so. But you can't simultaneously claim the mantle of the New Testament and assert that John Q. Public, waywardly floating about in 21st-century Brooklyn and disconnected from organized Christianity, is speaking in persona Christi while the Church He founded is leading the flock astray. Though it may reasonably surprise an American public that has grown accustomed to the moral imprecision of the post-conciliar clergy, there are still prelates in the Catholic hierarchy who believe what the Church does and always has taught.Bishop Tobin is not a human-resources manager at a woke tech startup; he is a bishop in the Roman Catholic Church, subservient to the deposit of faith and an heir to the unbroken chain of apostles who have served in the episcopate over the past two thousand years. He has duties far higher than currying favor with Mia Farrow. |

Military judge removes prosecutor from Navy SEAL murder case Posted: 03 Jun 2019 08:14 PM PDT A military judge took the rare step Monday to remove a prosecutor accused of misconduct from the war crimes case of a decorated Navy SEAL. Capt. Aaron Rugh ordered the lead prosecutor removed from the case of Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher after defense lawyers accused the prosecution of spying on their emails, according to the ruling. The defense asked Rugh to dismiss the case or remove prosecutors because of the surreptitious effort to track defense emails without court approval in an effort to find the source of news leaks. |
Tiananmen's key moments: hope crushed by soldiers and tanks Posted: 03 Jun 2019 08:21 PM PDT Tuesday marks the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown in Beijing where Chinese troops fired on peaceful protesters, drawing global condemnation. Students rallying for democracy and freedom had filled the symbolic heart of Chinese power, drawing in workers and intellectuals and inspiring demonstrations across the country. Purged during the Cultural Revolution, Hu Yaobang was elected Chinese Communist Party leader in 1981 but dismissed in 1987 for his relaxed handling of a wave of student unrest. |
Britain listens to the United States on Huawei, foreign minister says Posted: 03 Jun 2019 12:32 AM PDT Britain takes careful notice of what the United States says on the risks of using Huawei in 5G networks and does not want to be overly dependent on a third country for certain technologies, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Monday. "We take careful notice of everything the U.S. says on these issues," Hunt told BBC radio. The Trump administration, which has sanctioned Huawei and tried to block it buying U.S. goods, has told allies not to use its 5G technology and equipment because of fears it would allow China to spy on sensitive communications and data. |
North Korea’s ‘Executed’ Nuclear Envoy Is Alive, CNN Says Posted: 04 Jun 2019 01:45 AM PDT Kim Hyok Chol, who led working-level negotiations for the February summit in Hanoi between President Donald Trump and leader Kim Jong Un, is being investigated for his role in the failure to reach a deal, CNN reported Tuesday. South Korean Unification Minister Kim Yeon Chul told foreign correspondents at a briefing he has nothing to share about the reported purge in North Korea. The Chosun Ilbo, a conservative South Korean daily, sparked global intrigue over the fate of Kim Hyok Chol when it reported Friday he had been executed by firing squad after being charged with espionage as part of an internal purge. |
WWDC 2019 keynote live stream: How to watch Apple unveil iOS 13 Posted: 03 Jun 2019 09:39 AM PDT Apple is set to kick off its annual developer conference on Monday, June 3rd with a keynote at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET. WWDC 2019 will focus on software updates and improvements, so we don't expect hardware to be the focus of the event. That said, Apple does love surprises. The highlight of the event will undoubtedly be the unveiling of iOS 13, which is expected to feature a variety of notable changes, including the long-awaited addition of a system-wide Dark Mode. We got a sneak peek at the feature when 9to5Mac shared screenshots of the update last week. Those images also revealed a new UI for screenshots on iOS, a redesigned Reminders app, and the combination of the Find My iPhone and Find My Friends apps.Beyond mobile OS updates, we also expect to see macOS 10.15 at the event, which will change the Mac experience in many significant ways. For one, there are several indications that iTunes is finally being retired in favor of individual apps. We also hope to learn more about Marzipan over the course of WWDC this week, which is an initiative that will bring macOS and iOS app development closer together, making it easier for developers to build apps for both platforms. Finally, tvOS and watchOS updates are likely in store as well.If you want to watch live as the WWDC 2019 keynote unfolds on Monday, here are all of your options: * If you're on a macOS or Windows 10 computer, click this link to watch the WWDC 2018 live stream. Apple used to have browser restrictions for its live streams, but now you can watch on any browser. * On an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android device, click here to see the live stream of Apple's big WWDC 2019 keynote stream. Again, you can watch on your preferred browser, not just Safari. * Finally, you can also watch all the action from WWDC 2019 on your Apple TV. Just make sure you've updated to the latest version of tvOS and find the Apple Events app on your home screen to tune in.There have been almost too many rumors floating around the internet to keep up with in recent weeks, but we will finally know everything there is to know when Apple takes the stage at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET. |

EXPLAINER-U.S. dependence on China's rare earth: Trade war vulnerability Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:23 PM PDT Rare earth elements are used in a wide range of consumer products, from iPhones to electric car motors, as well as military jet engines, satellites and lasers. Rising tensions between the United States and China have sparked concerns that Beijing could use its dominant position as a supplier of rare earths for leverage in the trade war between the two global economic powers. China supplied 80% of the rare earths imported by the United States from 2014 to 2017. |

The attack also wounded more than 20 people, according to the Britain-based monitor. |
All the best new iOS 13 features Apple didn’t reveal at WWDC Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:17 AM PDT Apple executives took the stage in San Jose, California on Monday morning and gave the world its first look at the company's next-generation software platforms. MacOS 10.15 Catalina is packed full of nifty new features, tvOS 13 gets a great new home screen, and watchOS 6 has all sorts of new features as well as new watch faces. You can read a full recap of all the biggest announcements right here, but it goes without saying that the star of the show during Apple's WWDC 2019 keynote was iOS 13. After last year's iOS 12 update focused almost exclusively on fixing bugs and improving performance, the company's new iOS 13 software shifts gears back to adding new features -- and needless to say, there are far too many new features in iOS 13 for Apple to have covered them all during its keynote presentation. We've already detailed the 15 best new iOS 13 features coming to your iPhone and iPad later this year, and it's a fantastic list. Highlights include the new system-wide Dark Mode users have been clamoring for, swipe typing support on the Apple keyboard, a new secure "Sign in with Apple" feature, and new call filtering capabilities that could eliminate spam calls almost entirely. But what about all the smaller iOS 13 features that Apple didn't have time to cover on stage at WWDC 2019?At the end of the iOS 13 section of Apple's WWDC keynote on Monday, senior vice president of software Craig Federighi noted that there were far too many new iOS 13 features to cover them all. As he said that, a slide flashed on the screen behind him and listed nearly 70 additional new iOS 13 features for the iPhone and iPad that hadn't been discussed on stage. Apple news blog 9to5Mac managed to take a screen captured of the slide in question, and it wrote out all the new iOS 13 features shown on that list. Here's the full rundown:iOS 13 system: * Optimized battery charging * Single sign-on extension * Option to download large apps over cellular * Video downloads optimized for congestion in India * Wi-Fi selection in Control center * Enhanced QR code scanning * Reading goals in Apple Books * Low Data ModeAudio: * Dolby Atmos playback * Bluetooth wireless splitterFaceTime, Phone, and Messages: * Improved search in Messages * Silence unknown callers * FaceTime on Dual SIM * iMessage on dual SIMPhotos: * Location controls for Shared Photos * Search enhancements in PhotosReminders & Notes: * Folder Management in Notes * Customize appearance of Reminders lists * View only collaboration in Notes * More powerful search in Notes * New Checklist Option in NotesMDM & Business: * Business Chat Suggestions * Data separation for BYOD * Managed Apple IDS for business * Modern authentication for device enrolmentCalendar & Mail & Contacts: * Add attachments to events in Calendar * New relationship labels in Contacts * Block sender in Mail * Mute thread in MailKeyboard & Language: * Separate Emoji and Globe Keys * Enhanced language setup * Thai-English bilingual dictionary * Hindi and English bilingual keyboard * Typing predictions for Hindi * Typing predictions for Dutch * Adjustable Chinese handwriting keyboard height * Typing predictions for Vietnamese * Typing predictions for Swedish * Language selection per app * Typing predictions for Cantonese * Typing predictions for Arabic * Vietnamese English bilingual dictionary * Refreshed Home accessory controls * Weak password warnings * Simultaneous phone calls on Dual SIM * Keyboard support for all 22 official Indian languages * New Indian language system fonts * Apple News+ in UK and AustraliaSiri: * Indian English Siri voices * Siri Suggestions in Apple Podcasts * Siri Event Suggestions from Third-party apps * Siri Shortcuts in Home automations * Conversational Siri shortcutsCarPlay & Maps: * Second video stream support in CarPlay * CarPlay irregular screen size support * Hey Siri support in CarPlay * CarPlay adjustable screen size support * Do Not Disturb While Driving in CarPlay * Independent CarPlay app views * Light mode in CarPlay * Improved Report a problem in Maps * Maps Place Card enhancementsSafari: * Updated Safari Start Page * Siri suggestions in Safari * Enhanced anti-fingerprinting protections in SafariAs you can see, there are definitely some gems that Apple didn't get to during the WWDC keynote. "Optimized battery charging" and "Low Data Mode" both sound quite promising, and several of our readers likely fainted when they got to "Improved search in Messages" on the list. The search function in Apple's Messages apps in iOS and in macOS has always been horrible, so we can't wait to see if Apple got its act together in iOS 13. Also worth noting, you won't find mention of the new volume HUD on the list above, but Apple FINALLY fixed the little pop up that appears when you adjust the volume in iOS 13. That's right, it doesn't block the entire middle of the screen anymore! Now that iOS 13 beta 1 is out (here's how to install it on your iPhone) and people are testing on their iPhones, plenty more news about new unannounced iOS 13 features will trickle out over the coming days. |

Tariff Time: America Will Soon Feel the Pain of the U.S.-China Trade War Posted: 03 Jun 2019 09:00 PM PDT The long U.S.-China trade war is about to hit another mile marker.New tariffs, announced in May on $200 billion worth of imports from China, and $60 billion worth of exports to China, go into effect June 1.Tariffs are a tax on American consumers and businesses, and the administration has already begun a process to increase tariffs even more. The U.S.-China trade war persists in American headlines. It's clear that the punitive tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have far-reaching implications for a host of U.S. sectors—from retail to farming—while changing little of China's economic practices. The American people have yet to hear clear economic reasoning from the administration regarding the continued hikes in tariffs, other than the fact that negotiations with China are difficult. Americans deserve a real, economic justification from the White House for the continued increase in tariffs. Congress also has an important role to play in helping Americans understand the implications of the ongoing trade war. |

Microsoft showed off a dual-screen next-gen Surface device behind closed doors Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:06 PM PDT One of Microsoft's next-gen Surface laptops has two screens instead of one, joined by a hinge, according to a new report from The Verge. Before you get excited about a Surface Phone, you should know the Centaurus isn't that either, as it's a more sizable gadget rather than a pocketable computer. Still, Microsoft is moving forward with new form factors for the Surface line, and it's ready to show off its prototype internally.Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans said employees were invited to an all-hands event for its devices team, where it played a sizzle video for the new Surface devices and showed a dual-screen prototype. Microsoft would not confirm anything for the time being, but the company is looking to be less secretive, at least internally. The Centaurus gadget is more similar to Microsoft's Courier tablet from the days when Steve Ballmer was in charge of the company -- a product that Microsoft never shipped. Andromeda, meanwhile, was the more pocketable version, which Microsoft has stopped developing for the time being, as it's focusing on the Centaurus. The dual-display Surface will run Windows Lite, which is a lighter version of Windows 10 that's meant to compete against Chromebooks and power dual-screen devices. Centaurus and Andromeda are the kind of devices that could pave the way for a foldable Surface in the future. However, Microsoft is focusing on a dual-screen Surface for the time being, rather than a device that features a continuous foldable screen.Intel is a prominent partner in all of this, as the chipmaker has been encouraging partners to create this type of hardware. The fact that Microsoft has already shown the Centaurus prototype to its employees suggests the product might launch by the end of the year.Microsoft is far from confirming any of these devices, but we've seen plenty of evidence in the past that a Surface Phone of some nature is still in the works, and Microsoft's Panos Panay confirmed last year that the company is looking at other form factors and will launch them when they're ready. In addition to the new gadget, Microsoft also showed employees a working version of xCloud, its cloud gaming service that will launch on Sunday at E3. Microsoft is pitching it as a way to resume your games on the go on iOS and Android, rather than a console killer. Finally, Microsoft demoed a new prototype for the Microsoft Teams app, designed as an extension to Microsoft's chat app for friends and family that supports location sharing, shared family calendars, and document sharing. The app is dubbed Microsoft Teams "for life." |
GM and Fiat Chrysler Unmasked as Tesla's Secret Source of Cash Posted: 03 Jun 2019 08:47 AM PDT General Motors Co. and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV disclosed to the state of Delaware earlier this year that they reached agreements to buy federal greenhouse gas credits from Tesla. The deal with GM will come as a surprise to those who thought years of sales of plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volts and all-electric Chevy Bolts would leave the largest U.S. automaker in the clear with regard to regulatory compliance. |
Posted: 03 Jun 2019 12:59 PM PDT Justin Sun, a cryptocurrency entrepreneur, bid $4.57m to have lunch with Warren Buffett, who once called Bitcoin "rat poison squared."Mr Sun launched a cyptocurrency called Tron, or TRX Troken, in 2017. It's valued at $2.56bn, and listed on CoinMarkCap.com as the 10th largest cryptocurrency in the world."As some of you might know, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway has said publicly he sees no 'unique value' in Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency," Mr Sun wrote in a Medium post, referencing more remarks from Mr Buffett. "Yet, he has pointed to the potential in blockchain, the underlying technology behind all cryptocurrency."Mr Buffett serves as the chairman of the holding company Berkshire Hathaway, and is thought to be worth over $82bn, making him the third richest person in the world. In 2018, the billionaire said Berkshire Hathaway would "never have a position" in the trend, saying "cryptocurrency will come to a bad ending."The high-priced lunch is part of an annual auction to raise money for the Glide Foundation, a San Francisco-based charity which Mr Buffet's late wife Susan supported. Glide provides meals for the city's homeless, offers support to domestic violence victims, and helps people find shelter. It has raised over $30m over its years. Mr Sun's nearly $5m lunch was the highest a bidder has ever paid for a lunch with the famed investor."I look at the upcoming lunch with Buffett as an opportunity to seek mutual understanding and growth," Mr Sun said his announcement. "To aid in the conversation and support the overall cryptocurrency and blockchain community, I will invite several industry leaders — with your input — to accompany me to New York City for the lunch."The auction for the lunch with Mr Buffet this year drew 18 bidders. Previous winners have included hedge fund manager David Einhorn, of Greenlight Capital, in 2003, and Ted Weschler, who won two years in a row and now works as one of Mr Buffett's portfolio managers at Berkshire Hathaway."I'm delighted with the fact that Justin has won the lunch and am looking forward to meeting him and his friends," Mr Buffett wrote in an email sent to Bloomberg on the lunch. "We are going to have a good time, and Glide will use his contribution to help many thousands of people." |

Boeing finds wing defect, including among some MAX Posted: 02 Jun 2019 06:31 PM PDT Boeing announced Sunday that some of its medium-haul 737s, including the 737 MAX 8, could have a defective wing part, but that there had been no reports of flight issues linked to the defect. The American aviation giant, which has been rocked by an unprecedented crisis after its entire 737 MAX 8 fleet was grounded in mid-March, said a subcontractor informed it of problems with a batch of a part involved in deploying the wings' leading edge. The leading edge of an aircraft is key to takeoff and landing because it is meant to improve the wing's drag and therefore the jet's aerodynamics. |
Scouted: Rothy’s Flats Changed How We Think About Ballet Flats. Their Sneakers Are Just as Good. Posted: 04 Jun 2019 07:00 AM PDT From my middle school days of Vans grew an obsession with the ease of slip-on sneakers. And when Rothy's, maker of the ballet flats that took the direct-to-consumer fashion world by storm, announced they were launching sneakers, I knew they were for me. And after getting sent a pair to try out, I was 100% right. What's great about these sneakers, and really slip-on sneakers in general, is that they are incredibly comfortable without feeling like your foot is suffocating. As someone with very high arches, regular sneakers can sometimes feel too tight even when they actually fit my feet correctly. The low profile and forgiving fabric of the Rothy's ones give the top of my foot enough room to move around.I don't really wear flats, so when I saw that Rothy's added sneakers, I jumped at the chance to give them a go. And they have now been dubbed my Galavanting Around Brooklyn shoe because they are comfortable, breathable, and freakin' machine washable. They're also just launching this really awesome rainbow version for Pride.Like the rest of the Rothy's catalog, they're made from recycled plastic bottles, come in a multitude of colors and patterns, and they're machine washable. They're the perfect sneaker to wear in the summer because you don't need socks. Once they get a little sweaty or stinky, toss 'em in the wash and they'll come out looking brand new. China Invokes Abraham Lincoln in Justifying Push to Take Taiwan Posted: 02 Jun 2019 08:41 PM PDT China's Defense Minister Wei Fenghe on Sunday invoked Lincoln's efforts during the U.S. Civil War to justify Beijing's approach toward Taiwan, which it sees as an integral part of its territory that must be unified by force if necessary. "American friends told me that Abraham Lincoln was the greatest American president because he led the country to victory in the Civil War and prevented the secession of the U.S.," Wei said on Sunday at the Shangri-La Dialogue, a security conference in Singapore. |
