Obama: Key allies ready to join U.S. action in Iraq Posted: 05 Sep 2014 01:37 PM PDT President Barack Obama said key NATO allies stood ready to join the United States in military action to defeat Islamic State militants in Iraq as he vowed to 'take out' the leaders of a movement he said was a major threat to the West. Obama said the Washington would hunt down and dismantle the organization, which has seized swathes of Iraq and Syria, in the same way it had tackled al Qaeda since the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States and was doing to al-Shabaab in Somalia. |
Chicago church apologizes after gargoyle falls, kills woman Posted: 05 Sep 2014 11:44 AM PDT A historic Chicago church apologized on Friday, a day after pieces of a gargoyle fell off the building's facade and killed a mother-of-two who was walking along the street. Sara Bean, 34, was killed on Thursday while walking to lunch with her fiancé, who is her longtime boyfriend and father of her children, local media reported. The Second Presbyterian Church in the South Loop neighborhood just outside downtown Chicago expressed its sympathy to Bean's family in a statement on Friday and said it was "deeply sorry at the death." The church, which does not have outstanding complaints over its structure but has had violations in the past, was putting up protective scaffolding on Friday to prevent any more accidents. According to the Chicago Department of Buildings, a metal decorative piece on the exterior of the building gave away on Thursday and dislodged part of a gargoyle on the steeple and the broken piece fell and struck Bean, who worked at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago. |
Oklahoma to halt execution until new protocols in place: governor Posted: 05 Sep 2014 11:45 AM PDT Oklahoma will put future executions on hold until new procedures are in place as recommended in a report about a troubled execution that exposed shortcomings in the death chamber, officials said on Friday. A doctor and a paramedic failed nearly a dozen times to place an IV during an Oklahoma inmate's April execution and were unprepared for how to proceed once the line they secured to deliver a lethal injection began leaking drugs, the report released on Thursday said. "I expect the Department of Corrections to implement the proposed improvements in protocols to ensure that future executions are performed effectively," Governor Mary Fallin said, adding that the department has started to draw up the measures. |
Calif. blue whales, once nearly extinct, back at historical levels Posted: 05 Sep 2014 12:07 PM PDT California blue whales, the largest animals on Earth once driven to near extinction by whaling, have made a remarkable comeback to near historic, 19th-century levels, according to a University of Washington study released on Friday. The recovery makes California blue whales - which study authors say now number about 2,200, or 97 percent of historical levels - the only population of blue whales known to have recovered from whaling. "The recovery of California blue whales from whaling demonstrates the ability of blue whale populations to rebuild under careful management and conservation measures," said Cole Monnahan, a University of Washington doctoral student and lead author of the study. Despite the comeback, the whales - which as adults can reach nearly 100 feet (30 meters) in length and weigh 190 tons (172 tonnes), twice as much as the largest known dinosaur - are still being struck by ships off the California coast at numbers above allowable U.S. |

Ukrainian officer abducted on border, deemed spy by Russia Posted: 05 Sep 2014 10:47 AM PDT Estonia said one of its security officers had been abducted on the border and taken into Russia on Friday as he tried to stop illegal activity on the border, but Russia said he had been detained on its territory as a suspected spy. Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said Tallinn had contacted Moscow about the incident, on a border that in recent years has seen a number of incidents involving the smuggling of goods, weapons and migrants. He was fulfilling his duties preventing cross-border criminal activity," a Security Service statement said. Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), successor to the Soviet KGB, said an Estonian officer, identified as Eston Kohver, had been detained on Russian territory and was being investigated. |

Iran not providing answers in nuclear investigation, says UN Posted: 05 Sep 2014 10:33 AM PDT Iran failed to meet a deadline to provide answers about its controversial nuclear programme, a UN atomic watchdog report showed Friday, throwing into doubt prospects for a deal with world powers. Tehran had agreed to provide information to allay concerns it was developing nuclear weapons, something it denies, including explosives tests that could potentially be used in a bomb. Not answering the International Atomic Energy Agency's long-standing questions over the allegations could harm the chances of a potentially historic deal between Iran and world powers focused on Tehran's current activities. New talks on this possible accord between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany are due to resume in New York on September 18 ahead of a November 24 deadline. |

One in 10 girls worldwide sexually assaulted, says UN report Posted: 05 Sep 2014 04:47 AM PDT By Katie Nguyen LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - One in 10 girls around the world - or about 120 million in total - have been forced to have intercourse or take part in other sexual acts, with rates higher in sub-Saharan Africa than other regions, according to the United Nations. Drawing on data from 190 countries, a report by the U.N. children's agency UNICEF said the most common perpetrators of sexual violence against girls under 18 are current or former husbands, boyfriends and partners. The study, which sifted through the biggest ever compilation of data on violence against children, also found that one in five murder victims were children or adolescents under 20. "Violence against children occurs every day, everywhere: the slaps of an upset parent to control an 'unruly' child, the sexual victimization of a teenager by a peer or a neighbor, the bullying of one child by another in the schoolyard, the emotional degradation of a child bride by her spouse," the report said. |

Lawyers for accused Colorado theater gunman oppose televising trial Posted: 05 Sep 2014 01:35 PM PDT By Keith Coffman DENVER (Reuters) - Attorneys for accused Colorado theater gunman James Holmes oppose requests by news media to televise his trial, arguing the presence of cameras would jeopardize his due process rights, a court filing made public on Friday showed. A group of television news outlets requested last month that Arapahoe County District Court Judge Carlos Samour allow expanded media coverage of the trial, which is set to begin with jury selection in December. Colorado law lets trials be televised at the discretion of the presiding judge. |
Police arrest suspect in quadruple Florida killing, rescue boy Posted: 05 Sep 2014 02:18 PM PDT By Letitia Stein TAMPA Fla. (Reuters) - Police arrested a man suspected in four killings and rescued a 4-year-old boy with him in a SWAT operation at a hotel in Tampa, Florida, early on Friday, authorities said. Adam Matos, 28, was apprehended at the Floridan Palace Hotel where investigators say he had fled with the child, Ismael Tristan Santisteban. Matos is being held in the Hillsborough County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault. Matos is the only suspect in the killings of two men and two women whose bodies were found in a roadside ditch near the boy's home in Hudson in Pasco County, about 45 miles north of Tampa, said Melanie Snow, spokeswoman for the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. |

"This accident is a big tragedy for the whole of Bosnia-Hercegovina. Unfortunately five lives were lost," regional governor Nermin Niksic said. The accident occurred in the Raspotocje mine in the suburbs of Zenica, in central Bosnia, which was hit on Thursday by a 3.5-magnitude earthquake. |

Tesla picks Nevada for $5B battery plant Posted: 04 Sep 2014 09:57 PM PDT U.S. electric automaker Tesla Motors is to build the world's largest lithium-ion battery plant in Nevada, the state's governor announced, unveiling plans for the five-billion-dollar "Gigafactory." The plant, plans for which were announced in July with Japanese electronics giant Panasonic, will bring nearly $100 billion dollars into Nevada's economy over the next 20 years, he said. It will employ 6,500 workers directly and another 16,000 indirectly, and add some four percent to Nevada's Gross Domestic Product, Governor Brian Sandoval announced, in what he called a "historic day" for the western US state. The deal with Tesla "will change Nevada forever and set in motion the creation of thousands of new job and stream billions of dollars into our economy," he said at a ceremony with Tesla boss Elon Musk. |
