Yosemite wildfire prompts 13,000 evacuation orders Posted: 19 Aug 2014 12:04 PM PDT Firefighters from across California were sent to battle an out-of-control wildfire on Tuesday near Yosemite National Park and authorities ordered the evacuation of 13,000 homes and businesses, officials said. Gusty winds fanned the Junction Fire, which erupted on Monday, and it spread rapidly through parched forest in the foothills of Yosemite, one of the most visited U.S. The blaze has destroyed eight structures and is threatening 500 others, including hotels, restaurants and homes near the central California town of Oakhurst, said Dennis Mathisen, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. |
Texas' Perry to turn himself in Posted: 19 Aug 2014 03:58 PM PDT By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN Texas (Reuters) - Texas Governor Rick Perry, a possible Republican presidential candidate in the 2016 race, was fingerprinted and had his mug shot taken by judicial authorities on Tuesday after being indicted last week on two felony charges of abusing power. This indictment is fundamentally a political act that seeks to achieve at the courthouse what could not be achieved at the ballot box," Perry said after finishing the 15-minute processing at the Travis County criminal justice center, a short walk away from the governor's mansion. The indictment has cast a shadow over a presidential run for Perry, who has ranked near the bottom of possible Republican candidates. Perry was indicted on Friday by a grand jury in Travis County, a Democratic stronghold in the heavily Republican state, over his veto of funding for a state ethics watchdog that has investigated prominent Texas Republicans. |
Islamic State vows to 'drown all of you in blood' Posted: 19 Aug 2014 08:52 AM PDT The Islamic State is vowing retribution should U.S. According to Reuters, a newly released video by the Islamic State shows a picture of an American man who had been beheaded in Iraq during the initial U.S. The Islamic State has focused on its goal of establishing a caliphate by seizing land in Iraq in Syria before launching any potential attacks on the West. Osama Bin Laden famously warned of the risks of establishing a caliphate too early, writing in a document seized in the raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan that an Islamic State could have the adverse affect of dividing the Sunni population. |

Gaza-based Islamist group added to U.S. terrorist list Posted: 19 Aug 2014 09:42 AM PDT An Islamist Palestinian group based in Gaza has been placed on the US terrorist black list, the State Department announced Tuesday. Since its founding in 2012, the "Mujahidin Shura Council in the Environs of Jerusalem" has claimed responsibility for a number of rocket attacks on Israel and a cross-border attack with explosives that killed a civilian at an Israeli construction site, according to the State Department. It said the group was composed of several jihadist sub-groups, and had declared its support for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a militant group that has declared a caliphate in areas of Iraq and Syria that it controls. |

Why were 100,000 elephants slaughtered over 3 years? Posted: 19 Aug 2014 07:37 AM PDT The insatiable demand for ivory is causing a dramatic decline in the number of African elephants. Poachers are hunting the animal faster than it can reproduce, with deaths affecting more than half of elephant families in the Samburu National Reserve in Kenya, a new study finds. In 2011, the worst African elephant poaching year on record since 1998, poachers killed an estimated 40,000 elephants, or about 8 percent of the elephant population in Africa. In the absence of poaching, African elephant populations grow about 4.2 percent each year, the researchers found based on detailed records from Samburu. |

Riske snapped a four-match losing streak with a straight set victory over Casey Dellacqua in her tournament opener. |
Tom Hanks’ Typewriter app is a shockingly huge hit for iPad users Posted: 19 Aug 2014 05:00 PM PDT Hanx Writer is a simple typewriter iOS app for the iPad, created by Hitcents at the request of Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks. Launched only last week and available as a free download, the app has already hit the No. 1 spot in the top free iPad apps on the App Store, TechCrunch reports, enjoying unexpected success for an app that's not at all essential to improving productivity on a tablet. The app offers users access to a keyboard that looks and sounds just like a typewriter – culled from one of Hanks' actual collection of real typewriters – but also complete with the modern functionality of a virtual tablet keyboard. Teens in LA school shooting plot 'wanted to die' Posted: 19 Aug 2014 04:58 PM PDT Two US teenagers arrested on charges of plotting a high-school mass shooting had a "very methodical" plan and wanted to die in the gun battle, police said Tuesday. The 16- and 17-year-olds, who police did not identify, wanted to kill as many people as possible and "planned to die through a shootout with the police," said Arthur Miller, the police chief in the Los Angeles suburb of South Pasadena. The plot to kill three staff members and as many students as possible at South Pasadena High School, which has 4,500 students, was "very methodical and it seemed very viable," said Miller. |
Israel hits Gaza, suspends Cairo talks after rocket fire Posted: 19 Aug 2014 04:56 PM PDT Israel and Palestinian militants resumed fighting across the Gaza border on Tuesday, ending a ceasefire, sparking panic across the war-torn enclave and halting truce talks. Gaza emergency services said that three people, including a woman and a two-year-old child were killed and 45 people injured in one Israeli air strike in Gaza City. Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said Israel had "opened the gates of hell on itself" by carrying out that attack and warned that the Jewish state would "pay the price for its crimes." The al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement that it fired 34 rockets into Israel on Tuesday, hitting Tel Aviv and the southern city of Beersheva. |
