Early season snowstorm coats Midwestern U.S., affects travel Posted: 21 Nov 2015 12:25 PM PST CHICAGO/DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) - A heavy fall snowstorm hit the Midwestern United States on Saturday, blanketing states from South Dakota to Wisconsin with as much as 16 inches (40 cm) of snow, slowing air travel and delaying some events for U.S. presidential candidates. The storm was forecast to travel east into the Great Lakes region, reaching Michigan and upstate New York according to the National Weather Service. "We have snow across the area with heavier amounts across northern Illinois," said Amy Seeley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Chicago. |
Reported plans of attack on Atlanta wrestling match not credible: FBI Posted: 21 Nov 2015 03:20 PM PST (Reuters) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Saturday it did not view a reported threat by Islamic State militants to attack a professional wrestling event in Atlanta this weekend as credible. The FBI statement came after a self-described member of the loose-knit hacker group Anonymous earlier this week posted a list online of events allegedly targeted by Islamic State militants that included a Sunday wrestling match in Atlanta. J. Britt Johnson, special agent in charge of the FBI Atlanta field office, said the agency was aware of "an alleged threat that includes an Atlanta, Georgia, venue and event" and that it had notified certain law enforcement and private security partners about it. |
Protesters of Minneapolis police shooting press on in cold Posted: 21 Nov 2015 12:31 PM PST A few dozen demonstrators endured bitter cold on Saturday outside a Minneapolis police station, where they have spent the last week encamped in protest of the killing of an unarmed African-American man. Jamar Clark, 24, was shot on Sunday by police two blocks from the 4th Precinct police station and died on Monday night after his family decided to disconnect life support. "There are a lot of us men doing a whole lot of talking ... but the men need to make sure that the talk is put into play," Michael Wilson, a 33-year-old protester, said through a bullhorn, imploring the other male protesters to take responsibility for their community and families. |

Belgium raises terror alert to highest level in Brussels Posted: 20 Nov 2015 05:31 PM PST Belgium raised its terror alert to the highest level in the capital Brussels on Saturday, with the OCAM national crisis centre warning of an "imminent threat" a week after the Paris attacks. "Following our latest evaluation... the centre has raised its terror alert to level 4, signifying a very serious threat, for the Brussels region," it said, as Europe tightens security after Islamic State militants killed 130 people in the French capital. "The analysis shows a serious and imminent threat requiring specific security measures as well as detailed recommendations to the population," said OCAM, which is part of the Belgian interior ministry, in a statement. |
