Wenger to summon German World Cup stars for Euro tie Posted: 16 Aug 2014 04:48 PM PDT Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits he is considering bringing his German World Cup winners back into the squad ahead of schedule for the first leg of Tuesday's Champions League play-off at Besiktas. The Gunners travel to Turkey having made heavy weather of their opening Premier League fixture at home to managerless Crystal Palace, where a stoppage-time goal from Aaron Ramsey secured a 2-1 victory against a side reduced to 10 men. Wenger had given German trio Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski extra time off following their nation's triumph in Brazil last month. |
Amish girls abducted with intent to 'victimize' Posted: 16 Aug 2014 04:46 PM PDT A US couple arrested and charged with kidnapping two Amish sisters intended to "victimize" the girls after snatching them from their roadside produce stand, authorities said Saturday. The girls, who investigators said had remained "strong" in the wake of the ordeal, were taken Wednesday evening while selling fruits and vegetables in a farming community near the Canadian border in New York state. Stephen Howells, 39, and Nicole Vaisey, 25, have so far been charged with kidnapping, but more charges are expected to follow, Wells said. The sisters, Delila and Fannie Miller, aged seven and 12 respectively, told investigators "facts about their time in captivity and those details were instrumental in us being able to make the arrests," Wells said. |

United false start a wake-up call - Van Gaal Posted: 16 Aug 2014 04:39 PM PDT Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United's 2-1 home defeat by Swansea City in his first competitive game as manager accurately reflects the enormity of the task ahead of him. A spate of injuries forced Van Gaal to hand competitive debuts to two academy graduates -- Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard -- and his three central defenders had an average age of 22. Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera made his competitive debut, but United's only other close-season recruit, left-back Luke Shaw, is currently sidelined by a hamstring injury. Although he was reluctant to discuss plans to strengthen United's thin squad, Van Gaal conceded that the loss to Swansea would serve as a reminder that success is unlikely to come instantly. |
American Lincicome has one-shot lead at LPGA Championship Posted: 16 Aug 2014 04:34 PM PDT (Reuters) - American Brittany Lincicome edged closer to her second major title after establishing a one-stroke lead after the third round at the LPGA Championship on Saturday. The second round leader was not at her sparkling best, but stayed in front with a respectable one-under-par 71 at Monroe Golf Club in Pittsford, New York to post a 10-under-par 206. Norway's Suzann Pettersen carded the equal best round of the day with a 67 to jump into a tie for second with defending champion Park Inbee (69), of South Korea, at nine-under. Another South Korean, Mirim Lee, was fourth at seven-under. |
IS could come to streets of Britain, warns Cameron Posted: 16 Aug 2014 04:29 PM PDT Islamic State fighters sweeping across Syria and Iraq are a direct threat to Britain and the country must use all of its "military prowess" to halt their advance, Prime Minister David Cameron said Sunday. Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, Cameron warned that the West faces a "generational struggle". "If we do not act to stem the onslaught of this exceptionally dangerous terrorist movement, it will only grow stronger until it can target us on the streets of Britain," he said. |
Ferguson-area native tasked with keeping peace Posted: 16 Aug 2014 04:29 PM PDT FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — In the days since Missouri Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson took charge of a volatile situation that threatened to turn ugly, tragic or both, his calm-yet-commanding presence has captured international attention. But when it comes to keeping the peace in the St. Louis suburb where a white police officer shot and killed an unarmed black teen, Johnson knows his neighbors' opinions are what matter most. |

Missouri governor declares emergency, sets curfew in Ferguson Posted: 16 Aug 2014 04:04 PM PDT By Ellen Wulfhorst FERGUSON Mo. (Reuters) - Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew in Ferguson on Saturday, trying to restore order after a week of racially charged protests and looting over the shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer. Johnson was named by the governor this week to oversee security in the suburban St. Louis community that has been roiled by the Aug. 9 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. Some in the crowd reacted angrily to the news and several said the police officer who killed Brown must be prosecuted for murder if peace is to return to the community. The unrest erupted after police officer Darren Wilson, 28, shot and killed Brown shortly after noon a week ago as Brown and a friend walked down a street that runs through an apartment complex where Brown's grandmother lives. |

Tringale reports himself for PGA Championship scoring error Posted: 16 Aug 2014 03:52 PM PDT Cameron Tringale has belatedly disqualified himself from last week's PGA Championship, saying he believes he signed an incorrect scorecard for the final round. The 26-year-old American said he had notified the PGA of America on Friday of the mistake he made last Sunday. "Realizing that there could be the slightest doubt that the swing over the ball should have been recorded as a stroke, I spoke with the PGA of America and shared with them my conclusion that the stroke should have been recorded," he said in a statement. "I regret any inconvenience this has caused the PGA of America and my fellow competitors in what was a wonderful Championship." |
Screaming survivors found in container at UK port Posted: 16 Aug 2014 03:43 PM PDT One man was found dead and 34 others still alive in a shipping container on Saturday after staff at a British port heard banging and screaming coming from inside. The men, women and children, all believed to be from the Indian subcontinent, were discovered inside the container at Tilbury Docks, east of London, on a ship that came from the Belgian port of Zeebrugge. Because a body was found, Essex Police has launched a homicide investigation. "Staff here at the port became aware of screaming and banging coming from a container," police superintendent Trevor Roe told reporters. |

US confirms airstrikes near Mosul dam, Arbil Posted: 16 Aug 2014 03:25 PM PDT The US military confirmed it conducted nine airstrikes Saturday near Arbil and Iraq's largest dam in an effort to help Kurdish forces retake it from violent extremists. US Central Command said fighter jets and drones had destroyed or damaged four armored personnel carriers, seven armed vehicles, two Humvees and an armored vehicle. Kurdish forces attacked the Islamic State (IS) fighters who wrested the Mosul dam from them a week earlier, a general told AFP. Buoyed by the air strikes US President Barack Obama ordered last week, the peshmerga fighters have tried to claw back the ground they lost since the start of August. |

40 FBI agents are in Ferguson to investigate the shooting of Michael Brown Posted: 16 Aug 2014 03:20 PM PDT 40 FBI agents have arrived in Ferguson, Missouri to investigate the shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, Missouri Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson announced Saturday. The FBI also handed out cards requesting information from local residents, which could be filled out and returned to investigators directly, or to members of the local clergy. |
