Four things that make Symphony of the Seas a truly unique cruise ship Posted: 26 Mar 2018 05:14 AM PDT Royal Caribbean's latest Oasis-class cruise ship, Symphony of the Seas, left France's Saint-Nazaire shipyard Saturday, March 24, for Spain, where it will homeport for sailing the Mediterranean this summer before heading to the Caribbean. Although the ship is yet to enter service, it already holds the title of world's largest cruise ship ... until another supersized vessel comes along, of course. As the world's largest cruise ship, Symphony of the Seas is obviously unique in size. |

Anti-Semitic slaying of 85-year-old prompts outcry in France Posted: 27 Mar 2018 12:16 PM PDT PARIS (AP) — Like many who survived Nazi horrors, Mireille Knoll embraced life, eating out and going to the theater despite limited means. Even as age and Parkinson's disease took their toll, she delighted in receiving guests — until one of them allegedly stabbed the 85-year-old to death because she was Jewish. |
Barrage of missiles on Saudi Arabia ramps up Yemen war Posted: 26 Mar 2018 01:38 PM PDT By Marwa Rashad, Sarah Dadouch and Abdulrahman al-Ansi RIYADH/SANAA (Reuters) - The Houthi movement that controls northern Yemen vowed on Monday to fire more missiles into Saudi Arabia unless it stops bombing the country, after one of its missiles caused casualties in the Saudi capital for the first time. The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis accused them of using Iranian-made missiles. Spokesman Colonel Turki al-Malki said the coalition reserved the right to respond to Iran "at the appropriate time and manner", under international law and within the framework of the United Nations, to protect Saudi Arabia. |

America's oldest gun maker files for bankruptcy as sales decline nationwide Posted: 26 Mar 2018 10:47 AM PDT America's oldest gun maker has filed for bankruptcy as firearms sales slump across the country following Donald Trump's election. Founded more than 200 years ago, Remington Outdoor said it was turning over control to creditors after a huge decline in sales in the last year. In 2016, the FBI processed a record number of background checks - used as a barometer for gun sales - but the rate has fallen since President Trump's election. The slowdown has been attributed to Mr Trump's opposition to gun control laws, which stopped the panic-buying rush that the prospect of a Hillary Clinton presidency had prompted. In the first nine months of his presidency Remington's sales were down 27.5 per cent. Remington Outdoor Company filed for bankruptcy protection Credit: AP The debate over gun control has intensified in the wake of the Florida Parkland high school shooting, one of the worst in the country's history, which left 17 dead. A recent poll showed that 69 per cent of Americans, including half of Republicans, now favour stronger gun control laws. Hundreds of thousands of protesters took part in organised marches across the US on Saturday in what anti-gun campaigners hoped would be a pivotal moment in their bid to end the country's gun violence. Remington Outdoor Company has filed for bankruptcy protection after months of financial problems Credit: AP A number of the US's biggest retailers raised the age limit for certain firearms purchases to 21 or stopped stocking semi-automatic weapons all together in response to the Florida Parkland shooting. Remington, which was founded in 1818 and is best known for its rifles and shotguns, filed for bankruptcy in order to cut a deal with its creditors. The company has faced lawsuits after its Bushmaster, an AR-15-style rifle, was used in the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting that killed 26 people, including 20 six and seven-year-olds. Remington was cleared of any wrongdoing but has continued to be blighted by financial difficulties because of declining sales. |

New Zealand says it can't find Russian spies to expel Posted: 27 Mar 2018 12:44 AM PDT New Zealand said on Tuesday it would like to expel Russian spies in retaliation for allegedly poisoning an ex-agent in Britain - only it can't find any Moscow operatives in the country. Scores of Russian diplomats have been ordered from the United States, Canada, Australia and various European countries in the wake of the nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury. New Zealand, a former British colony and staunch London ally, offered in-principle support but admitted a lack of Russian spy activity meant there was little action it could take. "We have done a check in New Zealand. We don't have Russian undeclared intelligence officers here. If we did, we would expel them," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told state radio. "When there's a range of international interests ... does it surprise me New Zealand is not top of their list? No, actually." Ardern said New Zealand "will keep under review what further actions it can take to support the international community over the Salisbury attack". Russia has denied it was behind the attempted assassination, which left Skripal and his daughter gravely ill in perhaps the first nerve agent attack in Europe since World War II. Mapped: Russian diplomats expelled from West New Zealand is a member of the "Five Eyes" intelligence-sharing network, which also includes the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia. Ms Ardern's comments came as Australia moved to expel two Russian diplomats in response to the poisoning. The United States said on Monday it would expel 60 Russian diplomats, joining governments across Europe in punishing the Kremlin. In total, 100 Russian diplomats were being removed, the biggest Western expulsion of Russian diplomats since the height of the Cold War. Australia followed suit on Tuesday. Julie Bishop, the foreign minister, said further measures, such as Australia boycotting the 2018 World Cup in Russia, could also be taken over the poisoning incident - but later rowed back on the threat. Malcolm Turnbull, the prime minister, said: "Together with the United Kingdom and other allies and partners, Australia is taking action in response to the recent nerve agent attack in Salisbury, UK. "Two Russian diplomats identified as undeclared intelligence officers will be expelled by the Australian government for actions inconsistent with their status, pursuant to the Vienna Conventions." Australia has already imposed a series of sanctions against Russia following the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 and the Russian annexing of parts of Ukraine in 2014. Traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, MH17 which was shot down in 2014 killing all 298 passengers and crew. Most of the victims were Dutch and 28 were Australians. International prosecutors concluded the airliner was shot down by a missile fired from a launcher brought into Ukraine from Russia and located in a village held by pro-Russian rebels, contradicting Moscow's suggestion that Ukraine's military brought down the plane. |

Iraq will prevent militant Kurdish attacks on Turkey: PM Abadi Posted: 27 Mar 2018 07:39 AM PDT Iraqi armed forces will prevent Kurdish militants based in northern Iraq from staging cross-border attacks against Turkey, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Tuesday. Abadi's pledge, made during a phone call with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, came a day after Ankara threatened to intervene directly if the Iraqi operation against the militants based in the Sinjar region failed. Turkey has long complained that fighters of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) are being given free rein to operate out of Sinjar against Turkish targets. |

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 04:30 AM PDT The Kremlin has warned Boris Johnson that it has a "surprise" in store for those who have the "impudence" to compare Russia with Nazi Germany. In a veiled warning to the Foreign Secretary, Maria Zakharova, a spokesman for the Russian foreign ministry, claimed that the UK is using the Salisbury attack as part of a "black PR" campaign to turn the West against Russia. Describing Mr Johnson's comparisons between Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Putin as a "colossal provocation," Ms Zakharova told Russian reporters that there would be repercussions for Britain. "We have a surprise for all who have the impudence to compare, to draw parallels between Russia and the Third Reich," she added. " Let's wait until Thursday, I promise to unveil a historic gift at a press conference. The gift is for Boris Johnson and everyone. " Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova attacked the Foreign Secretary over his comments It comes after Mr Johnson compared Russia's actions to those of Nazi Germany, telling MPs last week that it was "certainly right" to compare this summer's Fifa World Cup with the Berlin Games of 1936. The Foreign Secretary went further two days later, telling reporters during a trip to Lincoln that Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 shared similarities with the invasion of the Sudetenland prior to Second World War. Mr Johnson's comments were met with a withering response from the Kremlin, which accused him of being "poisoned with venom of hate, boorishness and unprofessionalism". Meanwhile, Theresa May's decision to blame Russia for ordering the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia has seen Western leaders rally behind Britain. Following a meeting of the European Council in Brussels last week, as many as 10 European leaders are preparing to expel Russian diplomats, including France, Ireland, Holland, Denmark. Russian spy poisoning | Read more The Prime Minister is expected to announce the reciprocal measures in an update to MPs on Monday afternoon. In the wake of growing condemnation, the Kremlin has moved from denying its involvement in the attack to suggesting that Mr Skripal's poisoning was conducted by the British intelligence services. Today, Ms Zakharova claimed that Britain could "not defend their thesis", adding that EU leaders came to their conclusions without a "single fact" or "argument" that proved Russian involvement. "[It] does not even remotely resemble a trial." Front Bench promotion - end of article |

Self-help guru accused of branding women is charged with sex trafficking Posted: 26 Mar 2018 05:00 PM PDT An American self-help guru accused of presiding over a secretive society of female sex slaves branded with his initials has been arrested in Mexico after fleeing from New York state. Keith Raniere, 57, co-founder of the group called Nxivm, was returned to Texas on Monday, according to prosecutors, and is due to appear in court on Tuesday. He is charged with sex trafficking and conspiracies that could see him jailed for between 15 years and life if convicted. The criminal complaint, filed by prosecutors in Brooklyn, alleges that Raniere – who gave himself the title "Vanguard" - set up a series of self-help workshops, with five-day courses costing as much as $5000. However, women were told that the best way to advance was within a secret group of "slaves" and "masters". Allison Mack, the Smallville actress, is among the group's following Credit: Getty Images The complaint says Raniere stood at the top of the pyramid, and women were expected to have sex with him. The FBI and Mexican police tracked him down on Sunday at a luxury villa on the Pacific coast, following his escape to Mexico with an unnamed heiress after The New York Times exposed the organisation last October. William Sweeney, FBI assistant director-in- charge, said the allegations amounted to a "disgusting" abuse of power over the women. "He allegedly participated in horrifying acts of branding and burning them, with the co-operation of other women operating within this unorthodox pyramid scheme," he said. The complaint alleged that many victims took part in videotaped ceremonies where they were branded in their pelvic area with a symbol featuring Raniere's initials. Inductees were also allegedly required to provide "collateral" such as damaging information about family and friends, nude photographs or rights to assets, which they feared they would lose if they did not go along with the rules. Some were forced to follow low-calorie diets as Raniere preferred exceptionally thin women, prosecutors said. Raniere denied many of the allegations when they were reported by the New York Times. "Over the past months, there have been extensive independent investigations performed, by highly qualified individuals, and they have firmly concluded that there is no merit to the allegations that we are abusing, coercing or harming individuals," he wrote in a letter published on the group's website. "These allegations are most disturbing to me as non-violence is one of my most important values." Allison Mack, the award-winning actress, is among the group's following and has appeared in YouTube videos with Raniere. |

China's premier pledges market opening in bid to avert U.S. trade war Posted: 26 Mar 2018 10:51 AM PDT Premier Li Keqiang said on Monday China and the United States should maintain negotiations and he reiterated pledges to ease access for American businesses, as China scrambles to avert a trade war. Li told a conference that included global chief executives that China would treat foreign and domestic firms equally, would not force foreign firms to transfer technology and would strengthen intellectual property rights, repeating promises that have failed to placate Washington. The United States asked China in a letter last week to cut a tariff on U.S. autos, buy more U.S.-made semiconductors and give U.S. firms greater access to the Chinese financial sector, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing unidentified sources. |
