Michelle Obama explains her iconic side-eye at Trump's inauguration Posted: 02 May 2017 08:32 AM PDT Alright, alright internet — settle down. We've had our fun. We've imagined all the things that could have been going through Michelle Obama's head on Trump's inauguration day. We've memed the hell out of the gift-giving photos. Now it's time to accept the truth. The former first lady explained at the American Institute of Architects convention Monday that - though it really, really appeared so (and we loved it) - she actually was not trying to shade the Trump family on inauguration day. Let's quickly take a look at the not shade: SEE ALSO: These Michelle Obama memes are the internet's coping mechanism the only good moment of this inauguration is michelle jim-facing the camera like "why did she give me this box" pic.twitter.com/WoGAWfKS0l — jomny sun (@jonnysun) January 20, 2017 michelle is all of us for the next 4 years pic.twitter.com/jurAn0zMz0 — joshy (@acidictly) January 20, 2017 Michelle's face pic.twitter.com/UYrcfAfm3t — The Office (@OfficeScenes) January 20, 2017 So what was really going on? The former FLOTUS explained that the beginning of the inauguration marked the final moments that her teenage daughters, Sasha and Malia, would have in the White House - the home in which they've largely grown up. Instead of shading Melania Trump's oddly timed gift, Obama was simply trying to hold it together on a tough day for her family. "That moment of transition, right before the doors opened and we welcomed in the new family," Obama explained, "Our kids were leaving out the back door in tears, saying goodbye to people." Taking it in on one last walk through the People's House. A post shared by Michelle Obama (archived) (@michelleobama44) on Jan 18, 2017 at 9:55am PST "I didn't want to have tears in my eyes because people would swear I was crying because of the new president," Obama added. (She's probably not wrong.) Though the family was sad to leave their home of eight years, Obama heartbreakingly reiterated that she has no desire to run for office in 2020. "I wouldn't ask my children to do this again," she said. Michelle, please just let us dream. WATCH: Trump thought being president would be easier than being a reality star businessman |
Nigeria's Buhari absent again from cabinet meeting Posted: 03 May 2017 04:29 AM PDT Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari failed to show up for a weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday, despite assurances from his wife that his health was not a cause for concern. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo chaired the meeting in the absence of the 74-year-old Buhari, who has now missed the last three gatherings of senior ministers and advisors. Buhari has been under growing pressure to disclose his state of health since he returned from the British capital in early March after nearly two months away. |
Same-sex couple can seek damages from Kentucky clerk: U.S. appeals court Posted: 02 May 2017 12:01 PM PDT A federal appeals court on Tuesday revived a damages lawsuit against Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who in 2015 refused to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples because it conflicted with her Christian beliefs. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati said a lower court judge erred in finding that damages claims by David Ermold and David Moore became moot, after a new state law last July excused clerks like Davis, from Rowan County, from having to sign marriage license forms. While the couple eventually did get a license, a three-judge appeals court panel said they could sue over Davis' initial refusal to grant one, after the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2015 said the Constitution guaranteed a right to same-sex marriage. |

Toddler accidentally locks himself in car, has a great time getting rescued Posted: 02 May 2017 02:40 PM PDT Fourteen-month-old Brandon Emery unwittingly locked himself in the car last week during a shopping trip with his mom. Don't worry, though — he made it out just fine. And he seems to have had an extremely fun experience. According to CBS News, the toddler climbed from the backseat into the front of his mother's unlocked car while she unloaded groceries at a store in Bude, United Kingdom. After she closed the trunk, but before she got back into the car, Brandon pushed the "lock" button. Whoops. And when Brandon decided to put a coin in his mouth, they swiftly broke the car window and pulled him to safety — making what could have been a terrifying experience a pretty funny one instead. North Korea says U.S. bomber flights push peninsula to brink of nuclear war Posted: 02 May 2017 06:47 AM PDT By Ju-min Park and Ben Blanchard SEOUL/BEIJING (Reuters) - North Korea accused the United States on Tuesday of pushing the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war after a pair of strategic U.S. bombers flew training drills with the South Korean and Japanese air forces in another show of strength. The two supersonic B-1B Lancer bombers were deployed amid rising tensions over North Korea's pursuit of its nuclear and missile programmes in defiance of U.N. sanctions and pressure from the United States. The flight of the two bombers on Monday came as U.S. President Donald Trump said he would be "honoured" to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the right circumstances, and as his CIA director landed in South Korea for talks. |
White House warns of government shutdown if Democrats 'don't behave better' Posted: 02 May 2017 03:51 PM PDT Speaking during the daily White House press briefing, Mr Mulvaney sought to clarify an earlier tweet series from President Donald Trump in which he said that the US needs a "good 'shutdown' to fix mess!" after Congress reached a budget deal that will keep the government open until September but didn't include funding for some of the president's top spending priorities. Mr Trump also suggested in the tweets that removing the the Senate filibuster might be a good strategy to pushing through his policies. "I think the president is frustrated with the fact that he negotiated in good faith with the Democrats and they went out to try to spike the football and make him look bad," Mr Mulvaney said. |
Iran's reformist ex-president backs Rouhani reelection Posted: 03 May 2017 12:14 AM PDT Iran's reformist former president Mohammad Khatami has skirted a media ban to endorse moderate incumbent Hassan Rouhani for a second term over conservative challengers in a tight May 19 election. Khatami, who during his 1997-2005 presidency oversaw a rapprochement with the West, has been barred from speaking openly since mass protests against the disputed reelection of his hardline successor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009. The hardliner's replacement by Rouhani in 2013 has seen a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers that led to the lifting of most international economic sanctions but is threatened by a tougher stance from the new US administration of Donald Trump. |

The unarmed Minuteman 3 missile has a range of around 8,000 miles, putting it within striking distance of Pyongyang. Barack Obama tweets at Jimmy Kimmel after his moving speech about the ACA Posted: 02 May 2017 11:21 AM PDT Well this is touching. After his incredibly moving opening monologue last night about his newborn son's open heart surgery and his support for the Affordable Care Act, late night host Jimmy Kimmel got a tweet from the man who made it happen, former President Barack Obama. SEE ALSO: That awkward moment when Republicans failed to kill Obamacare but they bought boastful TV ads anyway and now they're airing, LOL In case you haven't seen the monologue (and truly, it's a must-watch), Kimmel reveals that his son was born with a heart defect that required emergency open heart surgery. After thanking the wonderful doctors and nurses who saved his son's life, Kimmel talked to his audience about the incredible importance of the ACA. "If your baby is going to die and it doesn't have to - it shouldn't matter how much money you make," the tearful host said. "I think that's something that whether you're a Republican or Democrat or something else, we all agree on that." "No parent should ever have to decide if they can afford to save their child's life...it just shouldn't happen," he pleaded. Obama, seeing Kimmel's impassioned speech (which, again is a must-watch), responded in a tweet Tuesday afternoon. Well said, Jimmy. That's exactly why we fought so hard for the ACA, and why we need to protect it for kids like Billy. And congratulations! https://t.co/77F8rZrD3P — Barack Obama (@BarackObama) May 2, 2017 Like Kimmel said, let's take care of each other.
