Niger's Christians try to forgive on first Easter after church attacks Posted: 05 Apr 2015 02:05 PM PDT Thousands of Christians across Niger tried to forgive and move on as they celebrated the first Easter since their churches were torched during deadly riots spurred by the publication of a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed. The walls and ceiling are still black from flames at the Saint Gabriel parish church in the capital Niamey, which was left without doors or windows by the unrest in January that killed 10 people and destroyed eight out of ten of the country's churches. We have forgiven, but what happened is still in our hearts," said Father Paul Wendyam Sandwidi, a priest at Saint Gabriel's. Saint Gabriel and 44 other churches were torched -- causing three million euros in damage -- during protests set off when the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo published the image of the Prophet Mohammed on its cover three months ago. |
Obama, first family attend boisterous Easter service Posted: 05 Apr 2015 10:51 AM PDT President Barack Obama attended a spirited Easter service at a historic black church on Sunday, in keeping with the first family's tradition of visiting local Washington area congregations. The president, his wife Michelle and their two teenaged daughters attended the Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, its pews filled with congregants who could barely contain their excitement over the visit. "How fitting that on the day we celebrate the rising of our Lord and Savior, we also welcome our sitting president," Pastor Howard-John Wesley said to applause from enthusiastic worshippers, whom he urged to keep their cellphones in their pockets and purses. The Resurrection is indeed real," read the message, retweeted by the Alfred Baptist Church from its own Twitter account. |
Law graduate named as Kenya massacre killer as country mourns Posted: 05 Apr 2015 12:07 PM PDT Kenya on Sunday began three days of national mourning for the 148 people massacred by Somalia's Shebab militants at a university as authorities identified one of the gunmen as a smart law graduate. Hundreds packed Nairobi's Anglican cathedral where Archbishop Eliud Wabukala said Easter services were overshadowed by "great and terrible evil" as police patrolled outside. Flags were at half mast and although President Uhuru Kenyatta has vowed to retaliate "in the severest way possible", there have also been calls for national unity. Kenyatta said people's "justified anger" should not lead to "the victimisation of anyone" -- a clear reference to Kenya's large Muslim and Somali minorities. |

Rolling Stone awaits review of discredited Virginia gang rape story Posted: 05 Apr 2015 04:09 PM PDT By Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Columbia University review of a now-discredited Rolling Stone magazine story about an alleged gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity was due out on Sunday, addressing questions of journalistic principles raised by the provocative article. Rolling Stone commissioned the review after backtracking on the story, "A Rape on Campus," which caused an uproar over the issue of campus sexual assault when it was published in November. The dissection of the article could lead to a shakeup at Rolling Stone, founded in 1967 by editor Jann Wenner, though CNN reported on Sunday that no one on the staff of the magazine was expected to be fired or punished over the debacle. Representatives of Rolling Stone were not immediately available for comment. |

Gay rights rally goes to Indianapolis NCAA Final Four site Posted: 04 Apr 2015 04:18 PM PDT Hundreds of people calling for Indiana to add protections for gays and lesbians to the state's civil-rights laws marched through downtown Indianapolis Saturday, attracting the attention basketball fans attending the NCAA Final Four, some of whom offered the protesters cheers of support. The march came two days after Indiana lawmakers responded to an uproar over a new religious objections law and tweaked the law to address concerns that it would allow discrimination against gays and lesbians. We're good now, right?'' he told crowd, which shouted back ''no!'' Dorsey then led the gathering in chanting ''Hoosiers don't discriminate! - No more Band-Aids masking hate!'' as they began a march that carried them several blocks past the city's business district, bars and restaurants to the Lucas Oil Stadium, home of this year's men's Final Four. |

Pope condemns indifference to jihadist atrocities against Christians Posted: 04 Apr 2015 03:43 PM PDT Pope Francis condemned indifference and "complicit silence" to jihadist attacks on Christians as he presided over Easter ceremonies in the wake of a massacre of nearly 150 people at a Kenyan university by Shebab Islamists. The leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics brought up the extremist persecution of Christians as the holiest ceremonies of the Church calendar reached a climax Sunday, when believers celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The Vatican has increasingly voiced frustration that attacks on Christians in places such as Iraq, Libya, Pakistan and Nigeria have not been more strongly condemned by Muslim authorities and Western governments. |
