Boeing reports jump in 1Q profits, lifts 2018 forecast Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:39 AM PDT Boeing reported a surge in first-quarter profits on Wednesday and lifted its full-year earnings forecast following a strong performance in commercial aviation and defense programs. The results again reflect broad health in commercial aviation as the airline industry enjoys a more stable financial period and as flying becomes much more common in the Middle East, Asia and other developing regions. A big player in China, Boeing has often been seen as vulnerable to a trade war between the United States and China, a possibility that topped Wall Street's list of worries earlier this month but has receded of late amid softer rhetoric between Washington and Beijing. |

Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:22 PM PDT A former gang member sentenced to death for killing a five-year-old girl and her grandmother when he opened fire at a child's birthday party is to be executed in Texas. Erick Davila has spent nine years on death row after used a laser-sighted semi-automatic rifle to spray bullets at about 20 people — more than a dozen of them children — in apparent retaliation for an attack by one of the people attending the party. Annette Stevenson, 48, and her granddaughter, Queshawn Stevenson, were killed in the 6 April 2008 attack and four others were wounded, including the girl celebrating her ninth birthday. |

'Maximum' security as Philippines readies Boracay shutdown Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:52 AM PDT Police with assault rifles patrolled entry points to Boracay island on Tuesday just days before a six-month shutdown and clean-up of one of the Philippines' top tourist attractions. President Rodrigo Duterte had branded the renowned white-sand resort a "cesspool" fouled by dumped sewage and imposed the temporary ban on visitors that is due to take effect Thursday. In Boracay, police conducted exercises simulating clashes with protesters, terrorist attacks and a hostage incident even as they said there was no specific threat. |

Neutral ground or dramatic backdrop? Where Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un could meet Posted: 25 Apr 2018 12:05 PM PDT Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un caught the world by surprise last month with the sensational announcement that the pair are to hold unprecedented talks. And now attention is shifting to where the most intensely-watched political event for years will be held. Mr Trump this week said there were five locations under consideration, and none of them were in the United States. Neutral venues in Asia and Europe are now considered the most likely options, but given that both Mr Trump and Kim have a reputation for enjoying the limelight, the meeting will almost certainly need to have a dramatic backdrop. Europe Officials in the US and North Korea would almost certainly be trying to identify a neutral venue which would not afford the other side a propaganda victory. Kim studied at a Swiss school, and Geneva has been mooted as a possible location. The city hosted talks between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985 as the US and Soviet leaders sought to limit the arms race. The men met in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, a year later, for another breakthrough summit. Speculation that Sweden could play host to the Kim-Trump summit mounted following a visit last month by North Korea's foreign minister to the Scandinavian country. Sweden, which has an embassy in Pyongyang, has frequently been used as a communication channel between the US and North Korea. Oslo has also been mooted as a possible contender. Officials from North Korea and the US met in the Norwegian capital over the release of Otto Warmbier, the American student who was brought back to the US last year in a coma after he was imprisoned for stealing a propaganda poster form a hotel. Elsewhere in Scandinavia, Helsinki could also be another option, as the city has also hosted unofficial talks between US experts and North Korean delegates. Finland's capital could also provide a historic backdrop for the talks as it was the site 1975 Helsinki Accords, which were seen by some as helping to ease Cold War tensions. Other European cities reported to be under consideration include Warsaw and Prague. However, Kim might favour a 'neutral' venue closer to home. Ulan Bator Mongolia has long regarded itself as being non-aligned, but the country has strong links with North Korea. It was the second state to formally recognise the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and in 2013, then-Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj visited the North. Mongolia also has good rail links with Pyongyang, and trains are the favourite form of transportation for North Korean leaders. Recent reports also suggest that Kim may not have an aircraft capable of flying him to distant locations. He could, therefore, be forced to use the train that took him to Beijing last month for any overseas summit he attends. "Mongolia has long offered its good relations with all parties involved in tensions on the Korean peninsula to provide a neutral venue for any discussions and negotiations," said Julian Dierkes an expert on Mongolia at the University of British Columbia. "Beyond a formal offer to host any meetings conveyed to US and DPRK diplomats in Ulan Bator a month ago, the Mongolian government is keeping its offer to host a summit very quiet." The North-South Korean border Moon Jae-in, the South Korean president, is already scheduled to meet Kim at the Panmunjom Peace House in the heavily-fortified border between the two countries. Panmunjom, which is located in the 4-km (2.5 mile) wide buffer zone between the North and South, is the focal point for one of the world's most dramatic borders. Panmunjom - locator map The demilitarised zone is also highly symbolic and relevant to the current tensions, as it is a modern day reminder of the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended only with an armistice, not a peace treaty. Mr Trump had planned to visit Panmunjom during his visit to Seoul in November, but had to cancel at the last minute due to adverse weather conditions. However the prospect of him finally getting his day at the popular tourist spot appear to have faded in recent weeks. China Beijing has long sought to deflect accusations that it is not doing enough to rein in North Korea by saying that the key players in the crisis are Pyongyang and Washington. However, Chinese officials will feel a loss of face with its position as a spectator in the emergence of talks which could have huge repercussions for north-east Asia. One such way to boost China's status as a key player is to act as host. However, the likelihood of China staging the talks have also decreased as tensions with the US linger over security and trade. It is also unlikely that Kim would welcome China stealing some of his attention on his big day. North Korea | Kim Jong-un's fiery relationship with the US North Korea It seems highly unlikely that US officials would welcome the president handing the North Koreans a propaganda coup with a visit to North Korea, but it would certainly appeal to Mr Trump's sense of drama - and perhaps his curiosity. Washington had apparently considered a visit by President Bill Clinton to Pyongyang, and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was supposedly laying the groundwork for this during her trip to the North Korean capital in 2000. Mr Clinton eventually visited when after had left office in 2009, but US officials would almost certainly rule out a sitting president visiting Pyongyang over security concerns. Kim would have the same worries if the US invited him to hold talks in the US, or indeed, on an aircraft carrier anchored in waters near the Korean Peninsula. Other possible Asian venues Japan has much to gain from a de-escalation of tensions in north-east Asia, but it is seen by Pyongyang as one of its historic enemies. Singapore held landmark talks between the leaders of China and Taiwan in 2015, but acting as host for Mr Trump and Kim would be an entirely different matter. Vietnam is also reportedly under consideration. The Communist state has seen relations with the US improve markedly since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. Thailand is also another option. There is a huge US Embassy in Bangkok and the North Koreans might feel more at ease in a country ruled by a military dictatorship. |

UK Jewish groups say disappointed by talks with Labour leader Corbyn on anti-Semitism Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:25 PM PDT By Andrew MacAskill LONDON (Reuters) - Jewish community leaders in Britain said their talks on Tuesday with opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on how to end anti-Semitism in his party had been a "disappointing missed opportunity". Corbyn met with the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council after they organized a protest last month accusing him of failing to tackle anti-Semitism in his party because of a far-left world view hostile to Jews. Before the meeting, Corbyn acknowledged that anti-Semitism had surfaced within his party and apologized for the pain this had caused. |

America Must Come to Terms with Reality in Syria Posted: 24 Apr 2018 04:40 PM PDT The joint attack carried out by the United States, United Kingdom and France on April 14 in Syria—targeting three sites related to Assad's chemical weapons program—was a firm reaction and punishment for Assad's continued use of chemical weapons against Syrian civilians. What singled out this chemical weapons attack from others Assad carried out over the past year was that it was not limited to the use of chlorine. The large number of civilian casualties and the fact that sarin nerve agent was mixed with the chlorine sparked the second military response by the Trump administration—this time together with the United Kingdom and France—with the aim of upholding the well-established international norm against the use of chemical weapons. |
Former California policeman arrested in 'Golden State' serial killer case Posted: 25 Apr 2018 04:52 PM PDT By Fred Greaves SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) - An elderly ex-policeman has been arrested and charged with four murders attributed to the Golden State Killer, a serial criminal responsible for dozens of rapes and slayings that terrorized parts of California during the 1970s and 1980s, authorities said on Wednesday. The suspect was identified by authorities at a Sacramento news conference as Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, in a case officials said was finally solved by DNA evidence two months after gaining renewed attention in the bestselling book "I'll Be Gone in the Dark." Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones credited the book with helping to generate new tips but added, "There was no information extracted from that book that directly led to the apprehension." The Federal Bureau of Investigation has previously said that the man sought in the 40-year-old case was tied to 12 slayings, 45 rapes and more than 120 burglaries in and around Sacramento, the eastern San Francisco Bay area and two Southern California counties. |

Taiwan to stage live-fire drill simulating China "invasion" Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:28 AM PDT Taiwan will practice thwarting a Chinese "invasion" in annual live fire drills in June, simulating surprise coastal assaults to reflect increased military threats from Beijing, officials said Tuesday. China's growing military is increasingly flexing its muscles and held live-fire drills last week in the Taiwan Strait -- the narrow waterway separating the Chinese mainland from Taiwan -- following weeks of naval manoeuvres in the area. Chinese officials said their drills were to safeguard Beijing's territorial sovereignty, a major priority for President Xi Jinping. |

Eurofighter doubts U.S. will use nuclear certification to tilt German jets bid Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:48 PM PDT By Andrea Shalal BERLIN (Reuters) - The head of Eurofighter on Wednesday said he did not expect the United States to slow certification of the European fighter's ability to carry nuclear weapons as a way to influence a competition to replace Germany's aging 90 Tornado jets. The Eurofighter is a joint project between British defense group BAE, European airplane maker Airbus and Italy's Leonardo. Airbus and Eurofighter on Tuesday submitted six binders of information to the German defense ministry, which has said it will prioritize a European fighter, but has also asked for information about the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jet and Boeing Co's F-15E and F/A-18E/F jets. |

Israel warns of attack if Russia air defences used in Syria Posted: 24 Apr 2018 09:27 AM PDT Israel's Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Tuesday that his country would attack Russian S-300 air defence systems in Syria if they were used against Israeli targets. "What's important to us is that the defensive weapons the Russians are giving Syria won't be used against us," Lieberman told the news website Ynet. Russia and Syria signed an accord in 2010 for the S-300 system but the missiles have not been delivered because of Israeli pressure, according to Kommersant. |
