Dutch unveil world's first solar-powered bicycle path Posted: 12 Nov 2014 12:49 PM PST The Netherlands on Wednesday unveiled the world's first solar bike path, a revolutionary project to harvest the sun's energy that could eventually also be used on roads. The so-called "SolaRoad" bike path is made of concrete modules each measuring 2.5 by 3.5 metres (eight by 11 feet), embedded with solar panels covered in tempered glass. The solar cells currently put the electricity they generate onto the national grid, but future plans include using the energy to power street lights. Electric bikes and cars will one day be able to refuel using contactless charging directly from the road or bike path, said Sten de Wit, a physicist who helped develop the project. |

Only this time, something went tragically wrong. More than a dozen of the mostly poor and illiterate villagers operated on by Dr. R.K. Gupta have since died, and scores remain sick in hospital, many of them in intensive care. ... |

Israel approves new settlements as Kerry looks to ease tensions Posted: 12 Nov 2014 01:15 PM PST Israel approved new settler homes in east Jerusalem on Wednesday despite mounting unrest, as US Secretary of State John Kerry was set for talks with the Palestinian leader on easing tensions. The new settlement construction was announced just hours after suspected Jewish extremists torched a West Bank mosque, in another development likely to inflame tempers in an already heated atmosphere. Months of unrest have escalated in recent days, spreading from annexed east Jerusalem to the West Bank and Arab communities across Israel, raising fears of a new Palestinian uprising. |
