Turkey to stop teaching evolution theory in high schools: education board Posted: 23 Jun 2017 08:08 AM PDT By Tuvan Gumrukcu ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey is to stop teaching Darwin's theory of evolution in high schools, deeming it controversial and difficult to understand, a senior education official said, a move likely to alarm secular Turks. Critics say President Tayyip Erdogan and the Islamist-rooted AK Party are undermining modern Turkey's secular foundations by pushing a conservative agenda, including tighter regulation of alcohol and other restrictions, since coming to power in 2002. A chapter entitled "Beginning of Life and Evolution" will be deleted from the standard biology textbooks used in schools and the material will be available only to students who go on to university studies from age 18 or 19, Alparslan Durmus, head of the national education board said in an online address this week. |

Posted: 24 Jun 2017 01:49 AM PDT Barack Obama received an "intelligence bombshell" from the CIA to warn him of a hacking campaign led by Vladimir Putin to help Donald Trump win the US election, it has been reported. The Russian president had given specific instructions on the operation's objectives to defeat Democratic candidate Hilary Clinton, and help get her opponent elected, the Washington Post revealed in a special report. Citing interviews with current and former senior US officials, the newspaper detailed how the Obama administration allegedly considered retaliating against Putin by releasing intelligence on him, and planting "cyber weapons" in Russia's infrastructure to destroy its economy. |
Panda mania hits Germany as China's cuddly envoys arrive Posted: 24 Jun 2017 01:55 AM PDT Germany was bracing for panda mania as furry ambassadors arrive from China on Saturday, destined for a new life as stars of Berlin's premier zoo. The pair, named Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, will be jetting in on a special Lufthansa cargo plane, accompanied by two Chinese panda specialists, the Berlin Zoo's chief vet and a tonne of bamboo. Berlin's mayor, China's ambassador to Germany and a gaggle of journalists will greet the VIPs as LH8415 pulls to a stop on the tarmac of Schoenefeld airport. |
More than 50 people killed in multiple Pakistan attacks Posted: 23 Jun 2017 12:29 PM PDT Multiple blasts and a gun attack killed more than 50 people and wounded at least 170 in three Pakistani cities on the last Friday of Ramadan, Islam's holiest month, as officials warned the toll could rise. Authorities said 37 people were killed and more than 150 wounded when twin blasts tore through a market in Parachinar, capital of Kurram district, a mainly Shiite area of Pakistan's tribal belt. Local official Nasrullah Khan told AFP that the first blast detonated as the market was crowded with shoppers preparing for the Eid ul-Fitr festival marking the end of Ramadan. |

The Mautes of the Philippines: from monied family to Islamic State Posted: 22 Jun 2017 10:04 PM PDT By Raju Gopalakrishnan and Manuel Mogato MANILA/MARAWI CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - Before they formed one of the most dreaded militant groups in the Philippines and pledged loyalty to Islamic State, the Mautes were a wealthy, political family in the southern region of Mindanao, largely influenced by the matriarch, Farhana. Soft-spoken and reserved, 60-year-old Farhana Maute owns property in Mindanao and in Manila, and runs a construction business, say people who know the family and security analysts who have scrutinized its background. |
Dinosaurs That Once Roamed Antarctica 'Live' Again in Exhibits and Film Posted: 23 Jun 2017 06:42 AM PDT But nearly 200 million years ago, Antarctica was very different. There were no polar ice caps, it was far warmer and wetter than it is now, and its lush, forest environments were inhabited by a variety of animals — including dinosaurs. Scientists dedicated to uncovering Antarctic dinosaur fossils spend months at a time camped on glaciers and digging in a frozen desert in order to excavate and reconstruct beasts that lived in the distant past. |
Minnesota police officer's brutal arrest of driver was 'disturbing', ACLU says Posted: 23 Jun 2017 10:19 AM PDT A Minnesota arrest in which a driver was dragged from his vehicle and repeatedly punched and kneed by a police officer was a "disturbing and completely unnecessary" example of an excessive use of force, the state ACLU has said. Video recently obtained by the Minnesota chapter of the ACLU shows Buffalo Ridge drug taskforce agent Joe Joswiak initiating a traffic stop with his gun leveled at the driver's seat of the vehicle, shouting expletives at the driver, and violently removing him from the vehicle – seemingly before he had a chance to comply with the officer's commands. |

Mr Kalanick, who helped establish Uber around eight years ago and was instrumental in growing it into a transportation behemoth, announced last week that he would be taking a leave of absence for an unspecified period of time. On Tuesday he resigned, buckling to pressure from major investors in response to a string of scandals that have plagued Uber in recent months. |
Report: Obama authorized ‘cyber weapons’ to punish Russia for election meddling Posted: 23 Jun 2017 10:00 AM PDT A Washington Post report said the Obama administration considered dozens of options to punish Russia for meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. One option included authorizing "cyber weapons," the "digital equivalent of bombs that could be detonated" if the exchange between the U.S. and Russia escalated. |

Venezuela: death of a protester Posted: 23 Jun 2017 02:40 PM PDT Over months of protests Carlos Garcia Rawlins has been on Venezuela's streets daily, documenting increasingly violent clashes with security forces, experience that helped put him within eyeshot of a soldier who fatally wounded a young activist at close range. Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have taken to the streets across the country since April to demand elections, solutions to hunger and shortages, and an end to President Nicolas Maduro's plan to overhaul the constitution. On Thursday, a thousands-strong march that was aiming to reach the chief prosecutor's office in Caracas was broken up by security forces with tear gas and pellets. |
California man vists Disneyland 2,000 days in a row Posted: 22 Jun 2017 09:13 PM PDT As one of the world's largest entertainment companies, Disney is used to adoring fans but one man has topped them all, visiting its California theme park 2,000 days in a row. Jeff Reitz marked the milestone on Thursday, using his Disneyland Resort annual pass which had enabled his trek to the park on a daily basis since January 1, 2012. "What we mostly know about him is that he loves Disneyland," said John McClintock, a spokesman for the theme park. |

Contractors brought in to CIA heaquarters steal $3,000 in vending machine snacks Posted: 23 Jun 2017 04:03 AM PDT Multiple CIA contractors have been sacked after stealing more than $3,000 (£2,360) worth of snacks from vending machines, it has been reported. The machines work with cards that need to be topped up online, so hackers unplugged a cable connecting the machines to electronic payment systems and used unfunded cards to get food at no cost. When the CIA realised that an unusual amount of snacks were disappearing from their vending machines they set up cameras to catch the culprits. |
Leaked parts pieced together to show us Apple’s iPhone 8 Posted: 23 Jun 2017 07:52 AM PDT What happens when you combine an iPhone 8 dummy unit built using schematics that supposedly leaked from Foxconn and a leaked iPhone 8 screen protector with a little bit of creativity? If recent rumors and speculation wind up panning out, you might end up with a glimpse of almost exactly what Apple's upcoming new iPhone 8 will look like when it's unveiled later this summer. Budding graphic designer Benjamin Geskin has been one of the most prolific sources of potential iPhone leaks so far this year. While his early attempts to spill the beans on Apple's upcoming new iPhone are believed to have largely been misinformation, his more recent leaks are in line with what we've heard and read from other sources. As such, his renders and mockups likely bear a close resemblance to the tenth-anniversary handset Apple will unveil this coming September. We've seen plenty of iPhone 8 dummy units already, and they're believed to have been crafted based on actual iPhone 8 schematics that leaked from Foxconn. We've also seen leaked screen protectors that reinforce the idea that Apple's iPhone 8 display will have a potentially hideous, though not unsalvageable display design. Since we know what the housing probably looks like and we have screen protectors that likely resemble the iPhone 8's front side, Geskin sandwiched a photo between them and gave us our potential first taste of what the iPhone 8 will look like when it's powered on. That cutout at the top of the screen where the ear speaker, cameras, and sensors are located still looks positively hideous, and we're hoping Apple uses a solution like the one we described rather than the layout seen in the photo above. There are still nearly three months to go until Apple actually unveils the iPhone 8 though, so we'll undoubtedly learn more in the coming weeks as details continue to leak. After all, Apple can't even keep its secret war on leaks from leaking. |

Bomber planning to attack Mecca's Grand Mosque blows himself up: ministry Posted: 23 Jun 2017 03:05 PM PDT Saudi security forces on Friday foiled a suicide attack on the Grand Mosque in the Muslim holy city of Mecca, cornering the would-be attacker in an apartment, where he blew himself up, the Interior Ministry said. In a statement read on state television, the ministry said that three cells had planned the attack on worshippers and security forces at the mosque as the Muslim holy month of Ramadan nears its climax. The trapped would-be suicide bomber exchanged fire with the security forces, then set off explosives when he was surrounded in a house in the central Mecca neighborhood of Ajyad al-Masafi near the mosque that had been used as the base for the attack, the ministry said. |
