Survivor found two days after Tanzania shipwreck after shutting himself in ferry engine room Posted: 22 Sep 2018 09:45 AM PDT An engineer who had shut himself into the engine room of a shipwrecked ferry was found alive yesterday, two days after it capsized in Tanzania. Bodies continued to float to the surface around the vessel, which initial estimates suggested was carrying more than 300 people. State broadcaster TBC said the death toll had reached 207. Four navy divers resumed their search inside the sunken MV Nyerere early on Saturday after hearing sounds that suggested signs of life. They pulled one man out of the overturned ship and he was rushed to hospital, a Reuters witness said. His condition was not immediately known. On Friday, President John Magufuli ordered the arrest of those responsible for the sinking. Tanzanian rescue workers remove bodies of victims from the water Credit: AFP Dozens of relatives stood crying by the shoreline as they waited for information on their loved ones. Coffins were lined up nearby awaiting bodies being pulled from the vessel, which lay belly up in the water just metres from the shoreline. "The ferry overturned very fast and covered us," survivor Charles Ngarima told Reuters. "I was lucky that I was able to swim under water not knowing where I was swimming to...while trying to swim to safety, I found a number of metal bars that cut my face and the back of my head." Another survivor, Jennifer Idhoze, blamed the ferry had capsized because it was overloaded. "I was able to jump out of the ferry... That is how I survived," she said. Works, Transport and Communication Minister Isack Kamwelwe said the government was sending special equipment to aid the rescue effort. The death toll after the capsized in Lake Victoria has risen to more than 207 Credit: AFP "This equipment will increase efficiency in the rescue operation and we will continue with the search until we are satisfied that we have rescued everyone," he told Reuters. The ferry sank on Thursday evening just a few metres from the dock on Ukerewe, the lake's biggest island. |
Duke shuts natgas plant due to Florence floods, coal ash leak feared Posted: 21 Sep 2018 05:28 PM PDT (Reuters) - Duke Energy Corp said it shut down a North Carolina natural gas plant due to flooding as the deluge of water continued in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, which has killed more than 40 people. Duke also said it cannot rule out the possibility that coal ash from another plant is flowing into nearby waters. Water breached the cooling lake dam at Duke's 625-megawatt natural gas L.V. Sutton plant, causing the company to shut the plant. |
May says EU response to UK Brexit plan 'unacceptable' Posted: 21 Sep 2018 06:57 AM PDT British Prime Minister Theresa May said Friday the European Union's abrupt dismissal this week of her Brexit plan was unacceptable, as she conceded negotiations were "at an impasse". European leaders refused to give ground to May at a summit in Salzburg on Thursday, warning that her proposals for future economic ties based on a UK-EU free-trade area only for goods would "not work". |

Brazil court orders Twitter to hand over user data related to Bolsonaro attack Posted: 21 Sep 2018 05:22 PM PDT A judge on Brazil's top electoral court on Friday ordered Twitter to hand over data of 16 users who celebrated via tweets the near-fatal assassination attempt two weeks ago of far-right, poll-leading presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro. Judge Carlos Horbach rejected an appeal from Twitter regarding the request and gave two days for the company to hand over the data, which was requested by the Bolsonaro campaign. The users could potentially face charges under Brazil's hate crime laws. |
Fear and fanfare as Hong Kong launches China rail link Posted: 22 Sep 2018 05:23 PM PDT A new high-speed rail link between Hong Kong and mainland China launched Sunday, a multi-billion dollar project that critics say gives away part of the city's territory to an increasingly assertive Beijing. Chinese security have been stationed in semi-autonomous Hong Kong for the first time at the harbourfront West Kowloon rail terminus, as part of a new "special port area" that is subject to mainland law. Despite critics' fears over passenger safety in the mainland zones, hundreds gathered at the terminus in the early morning, with the first train leaving for the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen at 7:00 am (2300 GMT Saturday). |

UK PM May facing ministerial resignations over Brexit plan: Telegraph Posted: 21 Sep 2018 02:45 PM PDT Some of British Prime Minister Theresa May's ministers will demand a "Plan B" on her Brexit proposal next week and could quit if she does not change course, the Telegraph newspaper reported late on Friday, citing unnamed sources. Ministers will demand an alternative plan to her "Chequers" proposal at a Cabinet meeting on Monday, the Telegraph said. Pro-Brexit members of May's party on Friday had welcomed her defiant tone, but her Chequers proposal has many domestic critics, too. |

At least 44 dead in Tanzania as ferry capsizes in Lake Victoria Posted: 20 Sep 2018 07:57 PM PDT At least 44 people died and scores were feared missing after a ferry capsized in Victoria, Africa's largest lake, with a desperate search for survivors set to resume in Tanzania on Friday. There were "more than a hundred passengers" on board the vessel when it sank Thursday afternoon near Ukara Island in the southeast of the vast lake, which also extends into Uganda and Kenya, a local official said. "It is feared that a significant number have lost their lives," said George Nyamaha, the head of Ukerewe district council of which the island is a part. |

Commerce Secretary Ross can be deposed in lawsuit over census: judge Posted: 21 Sep 2018 03:31 PM PDT U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman in Manhattan ruled that Ross, who oversees the census, must submit to a four-hour deposition because his "intent and credibility are directly at issue" in the litigation. A spokesman for the Commerce Department declined to comment. The census, mandated by the U.S. Constitution, is conducted every 10 years and counts every resident in the United States. |
Posted: 21 Sep 2018 01:10 PM PDT The Range Rover Sport Supercharged has an attractive, well-equipped cabin, but the interior fittings don't feel any more special than those found in the V-6–powered Range Rover Sports. What is new, however, is the addition of Jaguar Land Rover's InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, which adds a second, reconfigurable screen that supplements the 10.2-inch infotainment display higher up on the dashboard. From this secondary screen users can select climate-control functions, turn on the heated and cooled front seats, and change the Range Rover Sport Supercharged's driving-mode settings. |
Italy's fashion industry says tackling low pay problem Posted: 21 Sep 2018 11:02 AM PDT Italy's fashion industry responded Friday to accusations of widespread underpaid and undeclared subcontracted work in a New York Times article, saying that the problem is limited and already being dealt with. "The problem of irregular employment exists in the world and luxury businesses are the most active in the fight against the phenomenon," said Carlo Capasa, head of the Italian chamber of fashion commerce. "Taking a few units that go underneath the radar seems a little pretentious," he told AFP at Milan Fashion Week after the NYT front-page investigation headlined "Inside Italy's Shadow Economy". |

White House pledges to step up cyber offense on hackers Posted: 20 Sep 2018 08:34 PM PDT The White House warned foreign hackers on Thursday it will increase offensive measures as part of a new national cyber security strategy. The move comes as U.S. intelligence officials expect a flurry of digital attacks ahead of the Nov. 6 congressional elections. The strategy provides federal agencies with new guidance for how to protect themselves and the private data of Americans, White House National Security Adviser John Bolton told reporters. |
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-class Sedan Is a Worthy Luxury Entry Point Posted: 21 Sep 2018 12:20 PM PDT One of the first things we were told during the briefing for the new Mercedes-Benz A-class sedan is that there are four ways to interact with it. Well of course there are, we thought, mentally ticking off the controls: steering wheel, accelerator, brake pedal, clutch-wait a sec, could this sporty little sedan actually have a manual transmission? What the Mercedes rep was actually talking about is the company's new infotainment system: Mercedes-Benz User Experience, or MBUX for short. |
Hot tech sector prompts shakeup in S&P 500 stock indexes Posted: 20 Sep 2018 11:59 PM PDT The hot and rapidly changing tech sector has prompted the S&P 500 stock index to reshuffle its components, opening up more chances to invest in Google, Netflix, Facebook and other stars after Friday's trading session. Facebook did not yet exist and flip phones were cutting edge in 1999 when the industry classification system was launched, but much has changed in tech, telecommunications and media. The reorganization of the industry groupings, the biggest in the history of the system, affects three of the 11 sectors within the S&P 500. |
RAF fighter jets intercept Russian bombers over North Sea Posted: 20 Sep 2018 09:02 PM PDT RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft were scrambled to monitor two Russian planes approaching UK airspace, the Ministry of Defence has said. The Russian Blackjack long-range bombers were not talking to air traffic control, making them a hazard to all other aviation, the department said. RAF Lossiemouth-based fighter jets intercepted the bombers over the North Sea between 40 and 100 nautical miles from the coast, according to the RAF. They added the Russian aircraft were in the UK "area of interest", although they did not enter UK territorial airspace. Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said: "Russian bombers probing UK airspace is another reminder of the very serious military challenge that Russia poses us today. Why are Russian bombers flying close to Britain? "We will not hesitate to continually defend our skies from acts of aggression. Once again the rapid reactions of our RAF have demonstrated how vital our Armed Forces are in protecting Britain." Russian aircraft are routinely intercepted, identified and escorted by the RAF. |
