Survivor found two days after Tanzania shipwreck after shutting himself in ferry engine room Posted: 22 Sep 2018 09:45 AM PDT An engineer who had shut himself into the engine room of a shipwrecked ferry was found alive yesterday, two days after it capsized in Tanzania. Bodies continued to float to the surface around the vessel, which initial estimates suggested was carrying more than 300 people. State broadcaster TBC said the death toll had reached 207. Four navy divers resumed their search inside the sunken MV Nyerere early on Saturday after hearing sounds that suggested signs of life. They pulled one man out of the overturned ship and he was rushed to hospital, a Reuters witness said. His condition was not immediately known. On Friday, President John Magufuli ordered the arrest of those responsible for the sinking. Tanzanian rescue workers remove bodies of victims from the water Credit: AFP Dozens of relatives stood crying by the shoreline as they waited for information on their loved ones. Coffins were lined up nearby awaiting bodies being pulled from the vessel, which lay belly up in the water just metres from the shoreline. "The ferry overturned very fast and covered us," survivor Charles Ngarima told Reuters. "I was lucky that I was able to swim under water not knowing where I was swimming to...while trying to swim to safety, I found a number of metal bars that cut my face and the back of my head." Another survivor, Jennifer Idhoze, blamed the ferry had capsized because it was overloaded. "I was able to jump out of the ferry... That is how I survived," she said. Works, Transport and Communication Minister Isack Kamwelwe said the government was sending special equipment to aid the rescue effort. The death toll after the capsized in Lake Victoria has risen to more than 207 Credit: AFP "This equipment will increase efficiency in the rescue operation and we will continue with the search until we are satisfied that we have rescued everyone," he told Reuters. The ferry sank on Thursday evening just a few metres from the dock on Ukerewe, the lake's biggest island.

Duke also said it cannot rule out the possibility that coal ash from another plant is flowing into nearby waters. Water breached the cooling lake dam at Duke's 625-megawatt natural gas L.V. Sutton plant, causing the company to shut the plant.

Fear and fanfare as Hong Kong launches China rail link Posted: 22 Sep 2018 05:23 PM PDT A new high-speed rail link between Hong Kong and mainland China launched Sunday, a multi-billion dollar project that critics say gives away part of the city's territory to an increasingly assertive Beijing. Chinese security have been stationed in semi-autonomous Hong Kong for the first time at the harbourfront West Kowloon rail terminus, as part of a new "special port area" that is subject to mainland law. Despite critics' fears over passenger safety in the mainland zones, hundreds gathered at the terminus in the early morning, with the first train leaving for the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen at 7:00 am (2300 GMT Saturday).

RAF fighter jets intercept Russian bombers over North Sea Posted: 20 Sep 2018 09:02 PM PDT RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft were scrambled to monitor two Russian planes approaching UK airspace, the Ministry of Defence has said. The Russian Blackjack long-range bombers were not talking to air traffic control, making them a hazard to all other aviation, the department said. RAF Lossiemouth-based fighter jets intercepted the bombers over the North Sea between 40 and 100 nautical miles from the coast, according to the RAF. They added the Russian aircraft were in the UK "area of interest", although they did not enter UK territorial airspace. Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said: "Russian bombers probing UK airspace is another reminder of the very serious military challenge that Russia poses us today. Why are Russian bombers flying close to Britain? "We will not hesitate to continually defend our skies from acts of aggression. Once again the rapid reactions of our RAF have demonstrated how vital our Armed Forces are in protecting Britain." Russian aircraft are routinely intercepted, identified and escorted by the RAF.
