Trump Is On The Verge Of Politicizing The Census, Advocates Say Posted: 22 Nov 2017 09:05 AM PST President Donald Trump is reportedly leaning toward tapping an academic for the No. 2 position at the U.S. Census Bureau, a decision that has alarmed advocates who say the pick lacks adequate management experience for a massive operational role and has political views that would undermine the credibility of the agency. |

Yemen port, airport to reopen to aid: Saudi-led coalition Posted: 22 Nov 2017 02:51 PM PST The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said Wednesday it would reopen a key Red Sea port and Sanaa airport to aid, after a more than two-week blockade following a missile attack on Riyadh. The coalition said it would reopen Hodeida port to receive "urgent humanitarian and relief materials" and Sanaa airport to UN aircraft from midday on Thursday (0900 GMT). Hodeida, which is controlled by Huthi rebels backed by Saudi Arabia's arch-rival Iran, is a key conduit for much-needed food and medicine imports to Yemen. |
Elite Royal Navy rescue team sent as possible calls detected from missing Argentine submarine Posted: 22 Nov 2017 03:33 AM PST The Royal Navy has deployed its elite submarine rescue team to join the search for a missing Argentine submarine, after failed satellite calls thought to be from the vessel raised hopes the crew were still alive. HMS Protector also began scouring the South Atlantic as part of the international hunt for the missing vessel, and HMS Clyde was being diverted from South Georgia. Argentine officials said naval bases had detected seven incomplete satellite calls over the weekend attributed to the sub and were now trying to use them to pinpoint its location. The communication attempts "indicate that the crew is trying to re-establish contact, so we are working to locate the source of the emissions," the Argentine Navy said on its Twitter account, adding that the calls lasted between four and 36 seconds. An international team of ships and aircraft were braving heavy seas and high winds to search for the German-built ARA San Juan which has been lost since last week. Argentine navy loses contact with submarine carrying 44 01:08 The Royal Navy said it was flying the Submarine Parachute Assistance Group (SPAG) to the region to join the hunt. The highly trained team of medics, engineers and escape specialists is continuously on six hours notice to go anywhere in the world. Team members are parachute trained so that they can leap into the water at the scene if needed, but in this case will embark on HMS Protector. They carry inflatable boats and life rafts, medical equipment and communications gear which allows them to talk to trapped crews. Arrived on task in the search area in the early hours of this morning and have commenced sonar and visual search for #ARASanJuan as part of the ongoing multinational operation. Conditions remain challenging given current weather. pic.twitter.com/Sxgi9MZGo5— HMS_Protector (@protector_hms) November 19, 2017 The San Juan and its 44 crew last made contact on Wednesday when she was 267 miles off the coast in the Gulf of San Jorge. The latest possible calls were a sign for "cautious enthusiasm", naval experts said, showing the crew may be alive, afloat and at a shallow enough depth to attempt to communicate. HMS Protector has begun sonar scans to hunt for the submarine Credit: MOD Claudio Rodriguez, whose brother Hernan is aboard the submarine, told a local television channel: "They've got to be afloat. Thank God. That gives us hope, because we knew that if they were down below, they would be screwed." HMS Protector, the Royal Navy's 5,000 ton ice patrol and survey ship, was diverted to join the search from a routine mission in the area and can bring its high definition sonar to bear on the search. Search and rescue mission for Argentinian submarine The hunt also includes help from Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and the United States. America on Sunday said it was sending a second P-8 Poseidon submarine hunting navy patrol plane to join the search. The US Navy has also dispatched two submarine rescue chambers that can dock onto stricken boats and ferry crew to the surface from hundreds of feet underwater. This real-time Black Friday tracker shows just how much we shop online Posted: 23 Nov 2017 04:10 AM PST Shopping season is upon us — even if Thanksgiving is just getting started. To really see how much everyone's dropping on deals, online shopping platform Shopify has a real-time dashboard showing how much and what (and from where) people are buying online. SEE ALSO: Black Friday 2017 deals from all over the internet, compiled just for you in one handy spreadsheet With over 500,000 online merchants, Shopify's dashboard this year will track shopping habits as the purchases happen. Based on feedback from last year's visualizer, the company is including more data about shopping trends. They'll show what categories are most popular, like fashion and apparel, health and beauty products, and toys and electronics. You'll also be able to see the size and scale of Black Friday-Cyber Monday shopping with reports on numbers of orders and dollars spent — down to the minute. Black Friday is of course a big retail "holiday" in brick-and-mortar stores. Then after a weekend of shopping, Cyber Monday has blown up as its own "holiday" for all the online deals and tech purchases. Now the lines have blurred and it's turned into a massive post-Thanksgiving consumer extravaganza. "It is all one event," Shopify VP of product Satish Kanwar said in an interview. "It's not as black and white. It's kind of a singular marathon that's happening." The shopping marathon brought in $555,716 in a single minute to Shopify merchants last year. Overall, consumer spending hit $3.45 billion on Cyber Monday last year, according to Shopify. This year is set to be even bigger — which seems nuts. "We're expecting the [shopping] season to be larger," Kanwar said. He said sales are starting earlier and countries outside of the U.S. are getting in on the discounts. More people are shopping from their phones, as well, he said. Shopify's Kanwar called all the shopping excitement this weekend the "Super Bowl of commerce." He's hoping to get a new winter wardrobe and a Nintendo Switch.A holiday shopping survey from WalletHub found that the most wanted gifts this year were gift cards, clothes and electronics. Better remember to stretch before whipping out that credit card. WATCH: KFC made a $10,000 pod to help you escape the holiday internet chaos |

Robert Mugabe 'guaranteed immunity' according to sources in Zimbabwe Posted: 23 Nov 2017 01:50 PM PST Zimbabwe's former president Robert Mugabe was granted immunity from prosecution and assured that his safety will be protected in his home country under a deal that led to his resignation, sources close to the negotiations said on Thursday. Mr Mugabe, who had led Zimbabwe from independence in 1980, stepped down on Tuesday after the army seized power and the ruling party turned against him. Emmerson Mnangagwa, the former vice president sacked by Mr Mugabe earlier this month, is set to be sworn in as president on Friday. A government source said Mr Mugabe, who is 93 and was the world's oldest serving head of state, told negotiators he wanted to die in Zimbabwe and had no plans to live in exile. "It was very emotional for him and he was forceful about it," said the source, who is not authorised to speak on the details of the negotiated settlement. "For him it was very important that he be guaranteed security to stay in the country...although that will not stop him from travelling abroad when he wants to or has to." Mr Mugabe resigned as parliament began a process to impeach him, sparking wild celebrations in the streets. His sudden fall after 37 years in power was triggered by a battle to succeed him that pitted Mr Mnangagwa against Mr Mugabe's much younger wife Grace. "The outgoing president is obviously aware of the public hostility to his wife, the anger in some circles about the manner in which she conducted herself and approached ZANU-PF party politics," a second source said. "In that regard, it became necessary to also assure him that his whole family, including the wife, would be safe and secure." Mr Mugabe had clung on to power for a week after the military intervened. He angered many Zimbabweans when he did not resign in a televised address on Sunday as many had anticipated. The government source said the tipping point for Mr Mugabe was the realisation that he would be impeached and ousted in an undignified way. "When the process started, he then realised he had lost the party," the source said. Mr Mugabe will receive a retirement package that includes a pension, housing, holiday and transport allowance, health insurance, limited air travel and security. Timeline Robert Mugabe as leader of Zimbabwe The elderly ex-president was "rugged and drained" by events of the past week and may travel to Singapore for medical checks in the coming weeks, the source said. He had been due to leave for the Southeast Asian country in mid-November before the military put him under house arrest. Mr Mugabe has maintained that he leads a frugal life and that he does not possess any wealth or properties outside Zimbabwe. But last month a legal quarrel between Grace and a Belgian-based businessman over a $1.3 million diamond ring lifted a veil on the wealthy lifestyle of Mugabe and his wife, nicknamed "Gucci Grace" for her reputed dedication to shopping. In Zimbabwe, Mr Mugabe runs a dairy business and the family has several farms while local and foreign media have reported that Grace has bought properties and luxury cars in South Africa. |
Grief, anger as relatives learn of Argentine sub blast Posted: 23 Nov 2017 01:43 PM PST Relatives of the 44 crewmembers aboard Argentina's missing submarine erupted in a welter of anger and grief Thursday after the navy released news of an explosion onboard, effectively ending hopes of survival. Itati Leguizamon, wife of sonar operator German Suarez, said that days of false hopes had left the families feeling manipulated by the navy which had repeatedly retained information about the crew's fate. Around 100 family members had been waiting hopefully inside the Mar del Plata naval base, the perimeter fence of which is festooned with messages of encouragement for the crew, religious images and Argentine flags and banners. |

Mumbai attack 'mastermind' to be freed as he eyes move to mainstream Pakistani politics Posted: 22 Nov 2017 11:04 AM PST A Pakistani court on Wednesday ordered the release from house arrest of Hafiz Saeed, a notorious jihadi with a $10m US bounty on his head. The move was seen as part of a military campaign to bully the civilian government. Mr Saeed, who was detained nine months ago, allegedly masterminded the 2008 Mumbai massacre in which 166 people were killed. The court rejected a request by the government to extend his arrest, citing a lack of evidence. On Friday, Mr Saeed is expected to walk free. When at liberty, his ability to travel the country and hold large, blood-and-thunder rallies has exasperated allies who believe Pakistan is too soft on terrorism. Mr Saeed held a major rally in Rawalpindi, right next to army headquarters, in 2016, and was present at long series of rallies in 2011. Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the charity led by Mr Saeed which the UN considers a front for terrorism, told the Telegraph it was a triumph for their cause. "This is a victory for the people of Pakistan who support Hafiz Saeed and the Kashmir struggle," a spokesman said. Close relations with Pakistan's army have historically helped to shield Mr Saeed. Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the militant organisation he founded in the 1980s, has never carried out an attack in the country, focusing instead on India, Kashmir and Afghanistan. The release comes at a feverish, rumour-filled moment in Pakistani politics. In October, the army confirmed plans to "mainstream" extremist groups by encouraging them to enter politics. Two new parties have sprung up recently. One, the Mili Muslim League, considers Mr Saeed its leader. Activists from the other, the Tehreek Labbaik Pakistan, have blockaded Islamabad's main motorway for a fortnight - a brazen act many believe would be impossible without at least tacit support from the army. Mr Saeed's release is "going to give a signal [to Mr Saeed's party] that 'you're guy has been freed'... now put your faith in winning, do more campaigning," said Ayesha Siddiqa, a defence analyst. This, Ms Siddiqa added, will eat into the votes of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz in a 2018 election. Under the leadership of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who was deposed over the summer in a much criticised ruling by the Supreme Court, the party had threatened military dominance of Pakistan. The justification for the 67-year-old's original arrest was opaque. Some believe it was connected to an investigation, now finished, into Pakistan's compliance with anti-terrorism financing regulations. Trials against Mr Saeed and his alleged accomplices have collapsed in the past for lack of evidence. However, a US-born member of LeT was sentenced to 35 years in American prison for his role in the Mumbai massacre, during which a team of gunmen attacked a railway-station, several hotels and a Jewish cafe over three days. |

Hariri says resignation on hold, pledges to stay in Lebanon Posted: 22 Nov 2017 08:02 AM PST Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad Hariri said Wednesday he was suspending his surprise resignation, pending talks, providing a potential way out of a political crisis that has rocked the country. Lebanon has been thrown into turmoil by Hariri's shock November 4 announcement from Saudi Arabia that he was stepping down, as well as his prolonged absence afterwards. The resignation was seen as a ratcheting up of tensions in the long-running rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and raised fears that Lebanon would be paralysed by regional tensions. |

Alex Marlow argued women have exploited the word in the wake of the me too campaign which has seen a steady stream of high profile individuals come forward to allege and denounce sexual assault. "Now it's become, really, any sex that the woman ends up regretting that she had," Marlow said on SiriusXM Patriot's Breitbart News Daily. |
