Italy court told Knox conviction case perfect, ruling delayed Posted: 25 Mar 2015 12:30 PM PDT An Italian prosecutor told the country's top court Wednesday that Amanda Knox's conviction for the sensational murder of British student Meredith Kercher was "beyond reproach". Mario Pinelli said there should be no doubt that Knox, an American, and her Italian ex-lover Raffaele Sollecito were responsible for the 2007 killing, as ruled by a Florence court last year. |
Ex-U.S. war prisoner Bergdahl charged with desertion, misbehavior Posted: 25 Mar 2015 02:28 PM PDT By Kelly Twedell FORT BRAGG, N.C. (Reuters) - U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, a former Taliban prisoner in Afghanistan, was formally charged on Wednesday with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, and could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted of the most serious count, the Army said. Bergdahl's attorney, Eugene Fidell of Yale Law School, said the Army had scheduled an Article 32 investigation hearing on April 22 to determine whether there was sufficient evidence to proceed with a court-martial. The Army said the investigation, similar to a civilian grand jury proceeding, would take place at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. |
Tornadoes hit Oklahoma and Arkansas, damaging structures Posted: 25 Mar 2015 04:56 PM PDT OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - A storm system produced at least three tornadoes in Arkansas and Oklahoma on Wednesday, downing power lines and causing damage to structures, officials said. There have been no immediate reports of major injuries or deaths. A tornado was spotted in Moore, Oklahoma, local media reports said. The Oklahoma City suburb was hit by a tornado in 2013 that killed 24 and injured more than 300. Police in the Tulsa suburb of Sand Springs said mobile homes were tipped over by a tornado that has left large parts of the area without power. ... |
Boston bombing jury sees fuse, debris from suspect's apartment Posted: 25 Mar 2015 12:51 PM PDT By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - The Boston Marathon bombing jury on Wednesday saw evidence including a fuse and a piece of a pressure-cooker lid seized at the apartment where accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother lived. A Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent described sorting through a debris-filled room that was "like a construction site" in the Tsarnaevs' cramped three-bedroom apartment in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just outside Boston, four days after the deadly bombing on April 15, 2013. There were tools in there, lots of debris," testified FBI Special Agent Christopher Derks, who led the apartment search. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 21, is accused of killing three people and injuring 264 with a pair of homemade pressure-cooker bombs packed with nails and BB pellets at the race's crowded finish line. |

Wisconsin officer, bank robbery suspect killed in shootout Posted: 24 Mar 2015 09:26 PM PDT (Reuters) - A Wisconsin State Patrol officer and a bank robbery suspect were killed in a shootout on Tuesday evening, officials said. The trooper began following a car matching the description of the suspect's vehicle around 5:30 p.m. local time in the city of Fond du Lac before the gun battle, Fond du Lac Police Chief William Lamb told reporters at a brief news conference. Lamb said no other suspects were being sought and that the Wisconsin Department of Justice was leading the investigation. David Matthews, the administrator of the justice department's criminal investigation division, said it was too early to provide additional information about the shooting. |
