South Carolina bill to remove Confederate flag advances in legislature Posted: 06 Jul 2015 03:22 PM PDT South Carolina lawmakers took a step on Monday toward removing the Confederate battle flag that flies at the state house in Columbia, long denounced as a symbol of slavery by critics. A bill to banish the flag from a Civil War memorial on the capitol grounds to a museum passed a crucial second reading in the state Senate by an overwhelming vote of 37-3 after an emotional debate. Numerous elected officials, including Republican Governor Nikki Haley, called for the flag's removal after the June 17 killings of nine African-American churchgoers during Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church in Charleston. Photos of the white man charged in the shootings showed him posing with the flag on a website that also carried a racist manifesto. |
Cosby obtained Quaaludes with intent of giving to women for sex: court documents Posted: 06 Jul 2015 04:16 PM PDT Comedian Bill Cosby testified in 2005 to obtaining Quaaludes with the intent of giving the sedatives to young women to have sex, according to court documents unsealed on Monday. Cosby, 77, made the admission during his testimony in a civil case brought by a former Temple University employee, Andrea Constand, who alleged that Cosby tricked her into taking drugs before he sexually assaulted her. Cosby's lawyers had argued that the documents would cause severe embarrassment to the comedian-actor, who is best known for playing Dr. Cliff Huxtable on the hit TV series "The Cosby Show" in the 1980s and '90s. |
Boston Marathon bomber files motion seeking new trial Posted: 06 Jul 2015 01:18 PM PDT (Reuters) - Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who has been sentenced to death, filed a motion in federal court on Monday seeking a new trial, according to court records. The preliminary motion for a new trial cited a lack of evidence in his trial this spring, according to documents filed in federal court in Massachusetts. Tsarnaev was convicted in April of killing three people and injuring 264 in the bombing near the finish line of the world-renowned Boston Marathon in 2013, as well as fatally shooting a police officer three days later. |
