Posted: 27 Aug 2020 07:10 AM PDT Hundreds of former aides to the last three GOP presidential nominees before Donald Trump took the party's mantle are rejecting his campaign and voting for the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, this fall.On Thursday, more than 230 former officials from the George W Bush administration — including some from Cabinet-level positions — publicly endorsed Mr Biden. Ex-campaign staffers for the late Senator John McCain and Senator Mitt Romney, the 2008 and 2012 GOP presidential nominees, respectively, have also thrown their public support behind the former Democratic vice president. |
The not-so-hidden racism behind mispronouncing Kamala Harris’s name Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:44 AM PDT Why is it that Republicans and conservatives in the GOP bubble can't seem to properly pronounce Kamala Harris' name, or don't seem to care what they call her? Just like they did to Obama, the Republicans are turning the senator and Democratic vice-presidential nominee into the "other," the "foreigner" with the funny-sounding name. |

China intercepts boat with activists suspected on board Posted: 27 Aug 2020 03:45 AM PDT Chinese authorities have arrested at least 10 people, including a Hong Kong pro-democracy activist, after its coast guard intercepted a speedboat believed to be heading to Taiwan, media reports said Thursday. The reports, citing unnamed sources, said activist Andy Li was among those detained. Li had been arrested earlier this month with nine others on charges of collusion with foreign forces under a sweeping national security law imposed by Beijing and was out on bail. |

RNC video showing violence in 'Biden's America' is actually Barcelona Posted: 27 Aug 2020 09:39 AM PDT The Republican National Convention aired a video meant to paint the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter demonstrations as inherently violent, chaotic events, but included a scene from protests in Barcelona, Spain.A public broadcaster in Catalonia reported that the images in question - of fires burning in the streets - were captured in 2019 in Barcelona. The protests in Spain began after a Spanish court sentenced Catalan separatists to prison. |
Trump must turn over tax returns, does not deserve immunity, Manhattan's top prosecutor says Posted: 27 Aug 2020 01:24 PM PDT Manhattan's top prosecutor told a U.S. court on Thursday he should be able to obtain President Donald Trump's tax returns, saying Trump cannot immunize himself from a criminal probe of his business practices by pursuing an appeal that has "no chance of success." Cyrus Vance, the Manhattan district attorney, urged the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan in a filing to reject Trump's emergency bid to block a subpoena to the president's accounting firm, Mazars USA, for eight years of tax returns. |

Neighbors with hoses target fires as crews urge them to stop Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:03 PM PDT With California firefighters strapped for resources, residents have organized to put out flames themselves in a large swath of land burning south of San Francisco, defending their homes despite orders to evacuate and pleas by officials to get out of danger. The former head of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said the effort near a cluster of wildfires around the city of Santa Cruz is larger and more organized than he recalls in previous blazes. The group of wildfires near Santa Cruz has burned 125 square miles (324 square kilometers) and destroyed more than 500 buildings. |

Biden spokesman likens the Republican National Convention to the Twilight Zone Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:46 PM PDT Since Monday, speakers at the Republican National Convention have painted a dire picture of how they imagine life would be under a President Joe Biden, saying it won't be safe to go outside due to mob violence, but it won't matter anyway because no one will have any jobs and all the businesses will be closed.Biden didn't make any comments about the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, focusing instead on the police-involved shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin. He said the fact that Blake was shot in front of his children made him "sick," and decried the looting that took place in the aftermath of peaceful protests. "Needless violence won't heal us," Biden said. "We need to end the violence — and peacefully come together to demand justice."While Biden stayed mum on the RNC, his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), and spokesperson Andrew Bates did not. Bates told NBC News the RNC has been filled with "toxic divisiveness, Twilight Zone conspiracy theories, and dangerous misinformation about the pandemic that Trump has failed to make headway with for months."Harris connected with supporters via text, sending out a message ahead of Vice President Mike Pence's speech. She told donors she's "not worried about what he's going to say — I know it will be nothing but lies."More stories from theweek.com 7 scathingly funny cartoons about the Republican National Convention Is the Republican Party a cult of personality? U.S., China trade jibes as military tensions worsen Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:10 PM PDT Both are at loggerheads over issues from technology and human rights to Chinese military activities in the disputed South China Sea, with each accusing the other of deliberately provocative behavior. Jesuit priest calls Lou Holtz's comment on Biden's Catholic faith 'terrible' Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:17 PM PDT Lou Holtz, a former college football coach, caused controversy during the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night when he declared that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is a "Catholic in name only."Biden has been vocal about his faith, which he says has helped him through difficult times in his life, like when his son, Beau Biden, died of brain cancer in 2015. Holtz made his judgment while delivering a speech praising President Trump, saying he is a man who "genuinely cares about people" and is someone Americans can "trust." Not long after Holtz was finished, liberals and conservatives alike jumped to Biden's defense on Twitter.> Did Lou Holtz just call Democrats "Catholic in Name Only?" > > Biden goes to Mass weekly. He's a devout Catholic and a man of actual faith who doesn't pretend to be one like Trump. > > These people are so dishonest.> > — Tara Setmayer (@TaraSetmayer) August 27, 2020> Disgusting lie by Lou Holtz that Biden is a 'Catholic in name only.'> > WaPo: "Biden almost always has rosary beads in his pocket ... This time, we need international observers to monitor America’s troubled elections | Opinion Posted: 27 Aug 2020 03:10 PM PDT Authoritarian nations, semi-legitimated dictatorships and dying democracies are regularly subjected to international observers whom they grudgingly allow into their countries to monitor elections. The United States sends teams of former government officials and private-sector volunteers around the world to certify —and sometimes condemn — election practices and results. They bear witness to vote tampering, citizen intimidation, ballot stuffing, polling place irregularities and outright stolen elections. They also often get to watch inspiring people power and real democracy at work. |

Iran relents on IAEA inspections at two sites, ending standoff Posted: 26 Aug 2020 05:08 AM PDT Iran said on Wednesday it was ending a months-long standoff with the U.N. nuclear watchdog by granting it access to two sites suspected of once hosting secret activities, easing diplomatic pressure on Tehran as Washington seeks to reimpose sanctions. Wednesday's breakthrough in the dispute over the sites was announced in a joint statement by Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency during IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi's first visit to the Islamic Republic since he took over the role in December. "Iran is voluntarily providing the IAEA with access to the two locations specified by the IAEA," Grossi and Iran's nuclear agency chief, Ali Akbar Salehi, said in the joint statement, confirming an earlier report by Reuters. |
Typhoon damages buildings, floods roads on Korean Peninsula Posted: 26 Aug 2020 05:32 PM PDT No casualties have been immediately reported in either South or North Korea as a downgraded Typhoon Bavi headed into China after passing near the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, South Korea's weather agency said. Bavi had packed maximum winds of 133 kilometers (83 miles) per hour when it made landfall early Thursday in a western coastal region of North Korea that is a major source of farming and fishing in a nation that deals with chronic food shortages. |
Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:08 AM PDT Four members of a remote tribe living on India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands have tested positive for Covid-19, sparking fears for the group's survival. The Greater Andamese number as few as 53 and have limited immunity to viruses like Covid-19 due to their isolated nature. They numbered more than 5,000 in the 1850s but when the British colonised the islands successive outbreaks of diseases like measles caused their numbers to plummet. Two of the Great Andamese who have tested positive have been admitted to hospital and two have been quarantined in a care centre. "It is extremely alarming that members of the Great Andamanese tribe tested positive for Covid-19," said Sophie Grigg, a Senior Researcher at Survival International, an NGO campaigning for the rights of tribal people. "They will be all too aware of the devastating impact of epidemics that have decimated their people". |

Registered Foreign Agent Pam Bondi Says Biden Is Corrupt Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:02 PM PDT Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, a registered lobbyist for a foreign government that Donald Trump's Justice Department has implicated in a corruption scandal, used her speech at the Republican convention on Tuesday to criticize former Vice pPresident Joe Biden for alleged self-dealing abroad."I fought corruption and I know what it looks like, whether it's done by people wearing pinstripe suits or orange jumpsuits," Bondi declared. "But, when you look at his 47-year career in politics, the people who benefited are his family members, not the American people."Bondi rehashed dubious allegations about Biden's policymaking role in Ukraine, which mirrored arguments made by her and others throughout this year's impeachment trial against President Donald Trump. Bondi was hired by the White House to assist with impeachment messaging late last year. When she took the White House job, Bondi wound down her work on behalf of the government of Qatar, which U.S. authorities recently implicated in a corruption scandal involving their hosting of the 2022 World Cup. In March, Bondi left the White House and restarted her work for Qatar. She remains a member of the President's Commission on Opioids. An executive order imposed by Trump in the early days of his presidency ostensibly bars former administration officials from lobbying for foreign governments, but Bondi appears to have benefited from a loophole in the rule.Bondi's relationship with Trump goes back years and has itself been the target of corruption allegations. In 2013, Trump's since-dissolved foundation made an illegal $25,000 contribution to a political group affiliated with Bondi as the then-attorney general was weighing whether to pursue a fraud investigation against the notorious Trump University. Bondi subsequently passed on the investigation.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Posted: 26 Aug 2020 02:17 AM PDT Nicola Sturgeon's economic case for separation has received a "hammer blow" after her chief economist published figures showing Scotland's "dividend" from being part of the UK has surged to almost £2,000 per person. The General Expenditure and Revenue Scotland (Gers) figures for 2019/20 showed each Scot received £1,633 more than the UK average in public spending thanks to the Barnett Formula. This is the equivalent of 9.2 per cent of UK total spending. But tax revenue north of the Border was £308 less than the UK average, including a geographic share of North Sea oil, accounting for only 8 per cent of the UK total. The Scottish Tories said that together this meant the "Union dividend" per person has increased to £1,941, up from £1,805 the previous year, and separation would require spending cuts equivalent to the entire NHS budget. Scotland's notional deficit - the difference between spending and tax revenue - surged by £2 billion to £15.1 billion last year. This was the equivalent of 8.6 per cent of GDP - more than treble the UK figure of 2.5 per cent and nearly three times the 3 per cent required for EU membership. |
