'Idiots of the century' swim in baited croc trap Posted: 23 Oct 2017 06:52 PM PDT A group of men seen swimming inside a baited crocodile trap in Australia near where a woman was recently eaten were blasted as "idiots of the century" Tuesday. Photos posted on Facebook showed the four men clambering on the floating trap set near a marina at Port Douglas in northern Queensland state and even posing inside it. It is not far from where a 4.3-metre (14-foot) croc killed dementia sufferer Anne Cameron. |

Stolen dog missing for three years found 1,700 miles away Posted: 25 Oct 2017 03:58 AM PDT A missing dog has finally been returned to its rightful owner, three years after it was stolen and taken 1,700 miles away. Staffordshire Terrier Ladybird was taken from a resident at a Texas living facility by a homeless man after she passed away. The woman had already asked her friend, Sharon Henderson, to look after Ladybird in the event of her death. She told Fox 7 Austin: "The neighbour in the living facility called this other homeless guy and he came and took Ladybird in the middle of the night knowing that her wishes were that he now have her." The man hitchhiked with the dog all the way to Portland, Oregon, with Ms Henderson adding that the "whole trip must have been horrendous for her". Three years later, a malnourished Ladybird was found wandering the streets alone following the death of the man who took her. The canine was in a terrible condition, with Ms Henderson explaining: "She hadn't eaten in so long, so had no jaw muscles, her head muscles had atrophied and she couldn't even chew. Her ribs were sticking out and she couldn't even go up two stairs with falling backwards." Ladybird was eventually reunited with her rightful owner thanks to the address stored on her microchip. "I want her to enjoy the rest of her life in the lap of luxury she's never known and have a family," her owner said. Smiling dog faces losing new home after adoption selfie alerts police |
Body found, likely Texas girl, 3, sent outside as punishment: police Posted: 23 Oct 2017 07:33 PM PDT The body of a toddler found in a culvert beneath a Texas road was likely that of a 3-year-old girl reported missing after her father said he punished her for not drinking her milk by making her stand alone outside at night, police said on Monday. Police in Richardson, a suburb of Dallas, said the father, Wesley Mathews, 37, was arrested on a new charge of injury to a child, a felony punishable by up to 99 years in prison. Mathews has already been charged for suspected child endangerment for the treatment of his daughter, Sherin, who went missing in about two weeks ago. |

At least 5,600 citizens or residents of 33 countries had returned home as IS faced devastating assaults on territories it held in Iraq and Syria, said the Soufan Center, a non-profit security analysis group. |
Republicans launch probe into Obama administration Russian uranium deal Posted: 24 Oct 2017 12:45 PM PDT Republicans in Washington have announced an investigation into a uranium deal with Russia negotiated by the Obama administration. The move was seen by Democrats as a Republican attempt to deflect attention away from continuing investigations into alleged Russian meddling in last year's presidential election. In doing so the Republicans are moving to resurrect allegations that the Obama administration, in which Hillary Clinton served as Secretary of State, mishandled the deal which gave Russia control over more than 20 per cent of US uranium supplies. Donald Trump and Republicans also allege that the uranium company donated to the Clinton Foundation to enlist Mrs Clinton's support - an accusation she dismissed as "baloney". The investigation centres on Rosatom, the state-owned Russian nuclear energy company, which began buying shares in Uranium One - a Toronto based enterprise with interests in the US - in 2009. Hillary Clinton Credit: Patrick Sermansky/AP Rosatom became majority shareholders the following year before later assuming full ownership of the company. The deal was approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a Government body made up of nine different administration agencies including the State Department. Devin Nunes, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee insisted the new inquiry was separate from the investigation into its investigation of Russian involvement in the election. "Well, the current Russia investigation is about the election. This is more about uranium and whether or not government functioned properly or not," Mr Nunes said. |

Saudi Arabia's crown prince promises to lead his country 'back to moderate Islam' Posted: 24 Oct 2017 08:04 AM PDT Saudi Arabia's ambitious young crown prince has said he will lead his country back to "moderate Islam" as he announced plans for a vast new £380 million economic development zone. Prince Mohammed bin Salman told investors gathered in Riyadh that his economic modernisation plans would go hand-in-hand with with political reforms to guide the conservative kingdom away from severe Wahhabi Islam. "We are returning to what we were before - a country of moderate Islam that is open to all religions and to the world," the 32-year-old prince said. "We will not spend the next 30 years of our lives dealing with destructive ideas. We will destroy them today," he added. "We will end extremism very soon." The prince's pledge is a challenge to Saudi's conservative clerics and came as he announced plans for NEOM, a new economic zone that will stretch across Saudi's borders into neighboring Egypt and Jordan. The zone will be 26,500km square, making it bigger than Wales and significantly larger than neighbouring Middle Eastern states like Israel, Lebanon or Kuwait. The prince made the announcement at an investor conference in Riyadh Credit: AFP PHOTO / FAYEZ NURELDINEFAYEZ NURELDINE/AFP/Getty Images The project is the latest announcement from Prince Mohammed, who is pushing aggressively to modernise the kingdom and wean it off its dependence on oil as part of his Vision 2030 plan. He laid out a vision of a futuristic economic zone where robots may outnumber humans, drones will carry passengers and omnipresent high-speed internet will be known as "digital air". Saudi has announced a string of reforms in recent months, including plans to allow women to drive, but it remains one of the world's most socially conservative societies. Prince Mohammed's modernising plans have been applauded by many western leaders but some analysts are sceptical that he will be able to push through economic and political changes on the scale he is talking about. Earlier this year, the royal family backed away from plans to cut benefits for state employees in the face of public anger - a sign of how difficult it may be to reform Saudi Arabia's oil-based economy. Last week, Saudi authorities said they were forming a council of Islamic scholars who would counter violent interpretations of the Koran and the hadith - a set of lessons learned from the life of the prophet Mohammed. The government has also eased restrictions on the use of video messaging applications like Skype and Whatsapp. The investment conference itself was intended as a symbol of modernity and dubbed by some observers as "Davos in the Desert". Men and women sat together at the event and it was attended high-profile figures like Tony Blair and Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund. "This initiative is something you couldn't have imagined happening in Saudi Arabia even a few years back," said Mr Blair, who praised the direction of Prince Mohammed's reforms. His comments were criticised by Reprieve, a British human rights group, which called Mr Blair's praise "spectacularly tone deaf" in light of Saudi Arabia's poor human rights record. "The Saudi government has executed hundreds of people in the past few years – including protesters and children," said Maya Foa, Reprieve's director. Prince Mohammed became heir to the throne in June at the expense of his older cousin, the powerful interior minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayaf, who was stripped of his title as crown prince. His father, King Salman, is 81 and in poor health and Prince Mohammed is widely seen as the effective ruler of Saudi Arabia. He serves as the country's defence minister and has wide powers to manage its economy. The prince has led the country's war in neighboring Yemen, which has seen more than 10,000 people killed. The UN recently blacklisted the Saudi-led military coalition for killing and injuring hundreds of children in the conflict. |

Could America's New Tanks Beat Russia's Armata Tank in Battle? Posted: 25 Oct 2017 05:04 AM PDT Who wins? Could America's New Tanks Beat Russia's Armata Tank in Battle? Army and industry weapons developers have begun work on an advanced next-generation Abrams tank specifically engineered with new weapons, ammunition, laser-spotters and advanced thermal sights able to outrange, outgun and outmatch the most modern Russian and Chinese tanks, service and industry officials said. Advanced networking technology with new, next-generation sights, sensors, targeting systems and digital networking - are all key elements of an ongoing upgrade to position the platform to, if needed, successfully engage in combat against rapidly emerging threats, such as the prospect of confronting a Russian T-14 Armata or Chinese 3rd generation Type 99 tank. |
