Pennsylvania police say sniper's journal shows 'true evil exists' Posted: 08 Oct 2014 03:53 PM PDT By Joe McDonald BLOOMING GROVE Pa. (Reuters) - Pennsylvania police have found a journal describing in chilling detail the ambush that killed a state trooper and wounded another nearly four weeks ago at a barracks in the Poconos Mountains, officials said on Wednesday. The journal was found about two weeks ago, along with two pipe bombs resembling hand grenades that police say survivalist Eric Frein left at a campsite in the deep woods, possibly as search teams were closing in on him during the manhunt. Police declined to say on Wednesday why they had waited to disclose the find. ... |

Liberian national Thomas Eric Duncan died in an isolation ward of a Dallas hospital, 11 days after being admitted on Sept. 28. ... |
U.S. justice grants Idaho's request to block gay marriage Posted: 08 Oct 2014 03:27 PM PDT By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy granted a request from Idaho officials on Wednesday and temporarily blocked the planned start of gay marriages in that state after a regional federal appeals court's ruling striking down the state's same-sex marriage ban. After some confusion over whether the court's order also affected the ban in Nevada, which was struck down as part of the same 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on Tuesday that invalidated the Idaho ban, Kennedy issued a second order hours later saying the stay applies only to Idaho. ... |
Officials erred in reporting voter spike in Missouri suburb where teen was shot Posted: 08 Oct 2014 03:56 PM PDT (Reuters) - A reported spike in voter registration numbers in Ferguson, Missouri, since the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer was the result of an error by election officers, state officials said on Wednesday. The St. Louis County Board of Elections reported earlier this month that nearly 3,300 Ferguson residents had registered to vote between Aug. 9 and Sept. 30, in time for the Nov. 4 election. But election commissioners ran the wrong report, said Laura Swinford, spokeswoman for the Missouri Secretary of State's Office. ... |

U.S. military hits six IS targets near Kobani Posted: 08 Oct 2014 09:15 AM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Wednesday reported six airstrikes that helped stop Islamic State militants from taking over the Syrian town of Kobani, but played down the significance of the battle in the long-term U.S. strategy to defeat the Islamist group. The airstrikes destroyed an armored personnel carrier, armed vehicles and artillery belonging to the militant group, which had threatened to overrun the town on the Turkish border, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement. ... |

Panhandler's cringeworthy truth exposed Posted: 07 Oct 2014 12:18 PM PDT It's pretty hard to get away with scamming the public in a time when everyone has a cell phone with a camera. A woman in Oklahoma City found that out while begging for money on the street. The 78-year-old was holding a sign claiming she needed cash for food. According to Daniel Ayala, he had given her money on a few occasions even when he didn't have enough money to pay for his own lunch. The story could have ended there, but then one day Ayala noticed the woman sitting in the driver's seat of a bright red 2013 Fiat — not exactly what you would expect of a woman who begged for money. He couldn't contain himself and let the woman know how he felt by screaming at her in the parking lot. |
