Wearied by partisan warfare, many women desert Democrats Posted: 05 Nov 2014 09:18 AM PST By Andy Sullivan and Emily Stephenson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats hoped women voters would help them weather a tough election year, but weariness with President Barack Obama and disgust with relentless partisan warfare in Washington prompted many to abandon the party they had backed two years earlier. In a bitter election marked by record spending, Obama's Democrats battled a powerful headwind of frustration among women voters who said they had grown tired of the relentless attack ads on TV and unceasing warfare between Democratic and Republican lawmakers. ... |
Missouri ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, court rules Posted: 05 Nov 2014 03:31 PM PST By Carey Gillam (Reuters) - Missouri's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, a St. Louis circuit judge ruled on Wednesday, adding momentum to efforts in states across the country to legalize gay nuptials. The decision comes a day after a federal judge ruled that neighboring Kansas also was violating the U.S. Constitution by refusing to allow same-sex marriages. More than 30 U.S. states permit same-sex couples to marry. "Marriage equality is now the law of the land in the state of Missouri," said Winston Calvert, the city attorney for St. ... |
Obama, Republicans sound conciliatory note but battles loom Posted: 05 Nov 2014 04:39 PM PST By Jeff Mason and Roberta Rampton WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and his powerful U.S. Senate adversary struck a conciliatory tone on Wednesday, but Obama's plans to proceed with new immigration rules foreshadowed a bumpy start to his relationship with a Republican-controlled Congress. Obama and Mitch McConnell, who will become majority leader when Republicans take charge in the Senate in January, signaled they hoped to get past a previously frosty relationship to pass legislation on priorities on which they can both agree. ... |
Obama to seek authority from Congress for Islamic State fight Posted: 05 Nov 2014 02:36 PM PST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Wednesday he would seek fresh authorization from Congress in the next few weeks for the U.S. military campaign against Islamic State militants, taking a new approach to congressional backing for the fight. Obama made the announcement at a news conference after his Democratic Party suffered big losses in Tuesday's congressional elections, which left Republicans in charge of the U.S. Senate. "The world needs to know we are united behind this effort and the men and women of our military deserve our clear and unified support," Obama said. ... |

'Famously liberal' city imposes historic tax Posted: 05 Nov 2014 12:00 PM PST By Ann Saphir BERKELEY Calif. (Reuters) - The California city of Berkeley overwhelmingly approved the first U.S. ballot measure to tax sugary soft drinks, and while supporters hope it will unleash similar efforts nationwide, organizers of the measure say their grassroots effort will not be easy to duplicate. The success in Tuesday's vote in liberal Berkeley follows a string of failures to tax soda, including in nearby Richmond, California, in 2012, as well as in New York City. Berkeley's new law will impose a 1-cent-per-ounce tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. ... |

Battle to win Bayou: Runoff election pricy for both parties Posted: 04 Nov 2014 11:55 PM PST Democrats and Republicans have spent months preparing for the possibility that the hotly contested Louisiana Senate race would not be decided on Nov. 4 and instead would stretch into December runoff. Now that that possibility is a reality, they get to deploy their plans. The battle to win the Bayou will be a complicated and expansive fight on the airwaves and to turn out voters who just voted, with both sides investing millions in an effort to jazz their bases once again and stave off election-fatigue. |

Long-term winner of midterms: Hillary Clinton Posted: 04 Nov 2014 11:59 PM PST Who won the 2014 midterm elections? The easy answer is the Republican Party. But in politics, the easy answer isn't always the only answer, and the winner of an election isn't always the one who benefits most. The long-term winner of the 2014 midterms wasn't even on the ballot this year. Her name is Hillary Clinton. |

In races shaped by voters' worries about the uneven economic recovery, Republicans won the governor's posts in the Democratic strongholds of Massachusetts, Maryland and President Barack Obama's home state of Illinois, according to projections. ... |
