Prince Charles, Camilla begin first official visit to Greece Posted: 09 May 2018 08:03 AM PDT Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla on Wednesday began their first joint official visit to Greece, a country of mixed feelings for the British royal family. "The relationship between our two countries goes back such a very long way," Charles told Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos at the presidential palace in Athens. The three-day visit comes as the Prince's Trust International, an initiative founded by Charles that has helped nearly 900,000 disadvantaged youths in the UK, expands its skills training activities to Greece. |

Toxic gas alert for Hawaii eruption; new areas at risk Posted: 10 May 2018 02:03 PM PDT By Terray Sylvester PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - Hawaii residents were alerted on Thursday to rising levels of toxic gas from volcanic fissures and geologists warned that new areas east of the erupting Kilauea volcano may be at risk to lava bursting from the ground. Hawaii County authorities sent a text message to residents in the southeast corner of the Big Island that a wind change would bring rising levels of sulfur dioxide gas, which is fatal if inhaled in large quantities. "Due to decreasing tradewinds, residents are advised to monitor their sensitivity to increased levels of SO2," the text message sent at 9.22 a.m. said. |

China's ZTE says US sanctions have crippled operations Posted: 09 May 2018 11:20 PM PDT Chinese telecom giant ZTE said its major operations had "ceased" following last month's US ban on American sales of critical technology to the company, raising the possibility of its collapse. ZTE, which makes telecoms equipment and handsets, is still "actively communicating" with the US side "to facilitate the modification or reversal" of the ban and "forge a positive outcome", the filing said. US officials imposed the seven-year ban last month after ZTE allegedly made false statements regarding its settlement of a case involving the illegal sale of goods to Iran and North Korea. |

The polls Wednesday delivered a decisive defeat to Najib, in a major political upheaval likely to reverberate deeply across the country's political landscape. Malaysia's outgoing leader has not been seen since official results showed he had been defeated by the country's opposition, led by his 92-year-old former mentor Mahathir Mohamad. |

Venezuela's Maduro says will win in 'economic war' post-election Posted: 09 May 2018 04:29 PM PDT Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro said on Wednesday he intended to defeat the "oligarchs" responsible for the country's crisis and that he would win the "economic war" they are waging against the once-wealthy country should he be re-elected next week. Despite millions suffering food and medicine shortages, Maduro is expected to win in next week's vote due to widespread abstention. "If you hand me victory on May 20, I swear I will end the economic war," said Maduro in front of hundreds of people who attended a Socialist Party event in the center of the country. |

Kenyan rose-farm dam bursts, 'sea of water' kills 47 Posted: 10 May 2018 11:57 AM PDT By Thomas Mukoya SOLAI, Kenya (Reuters) - A dam on a commercial flower farm in Kenya's Rift Valley burst after weeks of torrential rain, unleashing a "sea of water" that careered down a hillside and smashed into two villages, killing at least 47 people. The walls of the reservoir, on top of a hill in Nakuru county, 190 km (120 miles) northwest of Nairobi, gave way late on Wednesday as nearby residents were sitting down to evening meals. Kenya is one of the largest suppliers of cut flowers to Europe, and roses from the 3,500-acre Solai farm are exported to the Netherlands and Germany, according to Optimal Connection, its Netherlands-based handling agent. |
Ukraine rebels parade banned tanks on Victory Day Posted: 09 May 2018 06:52 AM PDT Thousands gathered Wednesday in Ukraine's rebel capital to watch a parade of banned tanks and artillery to celebrate the Soviet Union's World War II victory over Nazi Germany. The display of such heavy weaponry used by Kremlin-backed rebels during their four-year conflict with government forces violates the terms of a 2015 peace deal that neither side has honoured. The peace deal called for both sides to withdraw mortars, rockets and other large calibre arms from demarcation lines, one of which runs through the outskirts of Donetsk, the main city of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic. |
