Everything we know about the Barcelona terror attack

Posted: 17 Aug 2017 05:45 PM PDT

Everything we know about the Barcelona terror attackAt least 13 people were killed and 100 injured on Thursday when a driver deliberately slammed a van into crowds on Barcelona's most popular street in what police confirmed was a terror attack. The attack, the latest in a wave of vehicle rammings across Europe in recent years, caused panic on the streets of Spain's largest city and drew condemnation from world leaders. "It was clearly a terror attack, intended to kill as many people as possible," Josep Lluis Trapero, senior police official, said. Barcelona terror attack, in pictures Hours later, police said they had shot dead "four suspected terrorists" and left another injured in Cambrils, a city south of Barcelona. The regional government of Catalonia, where both Barcelona and Cambrils are located, also confirmed the incident in the early hours of Friday, which police had earlier qualified as a "possible terrorist attack." Here is everything we know. What happened in Barcelona? Footage appears to show damaged vehicle in cordoned-off Barcelona street 00:31 A white Fiat van, reportedly rented, rammed into pedestrians outside a kosher restaurant on a busy street in Barcelona shortly after 5pm on Thursday. The vehicle van veered onto the promenade and barreled down the busy walkway in central Barcelona for 500 metres, swerving back and forth as it mowed pedestrians down and turned a picturesque tourist destination into a bloody killing zone.  Victims were left sprawled in the street, spattered with blood or writhing in pain from broken limbs. Others fled in panic through Las Ramblas, screaming or carrying young children in their arms. Lawyer and University of Glasgow rector Aamer Anwar was walking La Ramblas when he heard screaming. He said a shopkeeper told him five or six people were badly injured and described the scene as "chaos". Mr Anwar said: "I was walking down Las Ramblas for something to eat. Part of it was in the shade so I decided to keep walking down and literally within 10 seconds there was a crashing noise. Armed police respond to terror attack in Barcelona 00:27 "I turned around and people were screaming - I could see a woman screaming with her kids - people started running and jumping into shops. I ran for about 50 or 100 metres and stopped to see what was happening. " British tourist Keith Welling, who arrived in Barcelona on Wednesday with his wife and 9-year-old daughter, said they saw the van drive past them down the avenue and took refuge in a restaurant when panic broke out and the crowd started running. "People were shouting and we heard a bang and someone cried that it was a gunshot ... Me and my family ran into the restaurant along with around 40 other people. "At first people were going crazy in there, lots of people crying, including a little girl around three years old." Mapped: Barcelona van attack What happened in Cambrils? Spanish police  killed several people in a coastal town south of Barcelona in response to a terrorist attack. Reports of an operation by security services in Cambrils emerged shortly after 1am local time, some eight hours after the attack in Las Ramblas.  Bystanders could be seen running for cover and several gunshots heard in footage posted on social media that appeared to have been filmed on the town's beachfront promenade. Mossos, the Catalan police force, urged locals to take cover tweeting: "Police operation in £Cambrils for possible terrorist attack. If you are now in £Cambrils avoid going out. Stay home, stay safe." According to Spanish broadcaster RTVE police opened fire killing four people and injuring one other. The broadcaster said police had suspected they were planning an attack in the wake of the deadly rampage in Las Ramblas. The suspects The driver of the van that mowed into the packed street was still on the run, Spanish police said on Thursday night. Josep Lluis Trapero of the regional police of Catalonia said two other people suspected of being involved in the terror attack had been arrested - a Spaniard and a Moroccan. One of the suspects arrested over the attack is a man born in the Spanish territory of Melilla in northern Morocco, he said. The other, Driss Oukabir, is Moroccan. A handout photo made available by Spanish National Police shows Maghrebi Driss Oukabir, alleged to have rented the van which was used to crashed into pedestrians in Las Ramblas Credit:  Spanish National Police/ HANDOUT Neither of them had any criminal record, he added. Spanish reports initially said that Driss Oukabir was being questioned on suspicion of involvement in the attack. But on Thursday night the mayor of Ripoll, the town where he lived, 70 miles north of Barcelona, said that a man identifying himself as Driss Oukabir went to his local police station and reported that his documentation had been stolen. Jordi Munell, the mayor, said that the man had insisted that he had been in Ripoll at the time of the attack and went to the local police station as soon as he saw his images broadcast in the media. Police suspect that Driss Oukabir's younger brother, named by Spanish media as 18-year-old Moussa, could have been involved. In a further twist, Trapero said police suspected a deadly explosion late on Wednesday at a house in Alcanar 124 miles south of Barcelona was linked to the van attack. Trapero said the explosion left at least one person dead, and police suspected those in the house were "preparing an explosive device." "It seems there was an accumulation of gas that generated the explosion," he said, without giving further details. The Spanish suspect was arrested in Alcanar, while Oukabir was held in Ripoll in northern Catalonia. Isil claim responsibility "Soldiers" of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant carried out the deadly van attack, the jihadist organisation's propaganda outlet Amaq said. "The executors of the Barcelona attack were soldiers of the Islamic State," Amaq said on its Telegram messenger account, without naming those it claimed were behind the attack. Amaq said they had launched the attack in response to calls to target states taking part in the United States-led coalition battling the jihadist group in Iraq and Syria. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said the attack was "jihadist terrorism" which required a global response. "Today the fight against terrorism is the principal priority for free and open societies like ours. It is a global threat and the response has to be global," Rajoy told a news conference in Barcelona. Isil, which once controlled a self-declared "caliphate" across large parts of Iraq and Syria, has suffered major losses in recent months. Coalition-backed Iraqi forces recaptured its Iraqi stronghold Mosul in July. World leaders condemn perpetrators and offer support to Spain Prime Minister Theresa May said she is "sickened by the senseless loss of life in Barcelona". "My thoughts are with the victims of today's terrible attack in Barcelona and the emergency services responding to this ongoing incident," she said. "The UK stands with Spain against terror. "Following the attacks in Manchester and London, Spain stood alongside the British people. Tonight, Britain stands with Spain against the evil of terrorism." U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter: "The United States condemns the terror attack in Barcelona, Spain, and will do whatever is necessary to help. Be tough & strong, we love you!" Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 17, 2017 He later added: "Study what General Pershing of the United States did to terrorists when caught. There was no more Radical Islamic Terror for 35 years!" In Germany, the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel said they were thinking of the victims of the "revolting attack" with "profound sadness", while French President Emmanuel Macron voiced "France's solidarity" with Spanish citizens following what he called "a tragic attack". Russian President Vladimir Putin called for the world to unite in an "uncompromising battle against the forces of terror". "We decisively condemn this cruel and cynical crime against civilians," Putin wrote in a telegram of condolences to Spanish King Felipe VI. Police cordon off scene in Barcelona where van ploughed through a street 00:45 The dead and injured Victims of the van rampage that left 13 people dead and around 100 others injured were of at least 18 different nationalities, Spain's civil protection agency said. A spokesman said that among the victims in the popular seaside city were nationals from France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Argentina, Venezuela, Belgium, Australia, Hungary, Peru, Romania, Ireland, Greece, Cuba, Macedonia, China, Italy and Algeria - without detailing whether he was referring to those who died or were injured. Authorities said a Belgian was among the dead and an Australian woman was seriously injured. Witnesses spoke of a scene of carnage, with bodies strewn along the boulevard as others fleeing for their lives. "When it happened I ran out and saw the damage," local shop worker Xavi Perez told AFP. "There were bodies on the floor with people crowding round them. People were crying. There were lots of foreigners."

The price of eclipse glasses have more than tripled on Amazon over the last 2 weeks

Posted: 16 Aug 2017 11:18 AM PDT

The price of eclipse glasses have more than tripled on Amazon over the last 2 weeksIf you're trying to be frugal and find a cheap deal on a pair of glasses for the solar eclipse, good luck. The price of the protective glasses continues to soar, even among concerns over sales of potentially useless glasses.  On Amazon, which seems to be the marketplace of choice for eclipse shoppers, prices for glasses have more than tripled over the last two weeks for the website's most popular protective glasses, according to Wikibuy.  Wikibuy, which tracks prices through its Google Chrome extension and through a real time price tracker on its website, shared data with Mashable on the pricing of the 4-Pack Premium ISO and CE Certified Lunt Solar Kid Size Eclipse Viewing Glasses on Amazon, which Wikibuy said are its most popular.  "From what our community has seen on Amazon, it appears that Amazon prices on eclipse glasses have more than tripled over the last two weeks," Matt Gratt, Wikibuy's Director of Growth, wrote in an email. "As always, consumers can find the true best prices on items by consulting price history tools and multiple stores around the internet." While the 4-Pack Premium ISO and CE Certified Lunt Solar Kid Size Eclipse Viewing Glasses are currently on backorder through Amazon Prime, one seller is selling them for a mere $249. (Yeah, price tag made us cringe too.)  Eclipse glasses are also four of the top five product searches on Amazon and Wikibuy, Gratt said. Based on the company's data, prices seemed to fluctuate, but remained pretty steady for awhile, but began to steadily climb since the beginning of August.  And it's not just Amazon — an analysis of pricing for packs of the glasses from third party retailers found that prices have more than doubled for new five and 10 packs since early August.  SEE ALSO: Where to buy your eclipse glasses before the total solar eclipse on August 21 The current price for a 10-pack of CE Certified Safe Solar Eclipse Glasses sold through a third party is $129.95, according to Camel Camel Camel, which tracks pricing of items on Amazon and through third party retailers.  For a five pack of premium ISO and CE Certified Lunt Solar Eclipse Glasses from a third party vendor, the current price sits at $39.95. But while the prices may not be ideal, if you're planning on viewing the celestial event, you'll need a pair of these glasses to view the eclipse without harming your eyes. A list of reliable vendors for eclipse glasses can be found here. Or you can check out this NASA video, which will show you how to view the eclipse without those fancy-shmancy glasses.  WATCH: Here's how many people in the U.S. will possibly see the eclipse

Donald 'I'm smart for not paying taxes' Trump accuses Amazon of skirting taxes

Amazon is the largest web-based retailer on the planet, raking in billions of dollars every year and employing over 340,000 workers. When you're that big — and the president of the United States likes to go on early-morning Twitter rants before his handlers can distract him — there's a good chance you're going to be mentioned once or twice. That's what happened this morning, as Donald Trump slammed Amazon for what he perceives as damage to the US job market.

"Amazon is doing great damage to tax paying retailers," Trump alleged. "Towns, cities, and states throughout the U.S. are being hurt - many jobs being lost!"

Donald Trump — yes, the same Donald Trump who outsources cheap labor at every opportunity — is taking a particularly hard-line stance with Amazon, and it's not the first time the company has run afoul of him. Trump, who brags that he's "smart" for not paying taxes, regularly attacks the online retailer for what he seems to believe is abuse of the tax system.

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/897763049226084352

Amazon, of course, was founded by Jeff Bezos. In a remarkable coincidence that surely has nothing to do with Trump's double-standard on taxes, Jeff Bezos also happens to own The Washington Post — the very same Washington Post that has been extremely critical of Trump's leadership and has repeatedly broken stories that caused controversy and chaos around the new president. It sure is a small world.

As with most of Trump's tweets, it's entirely unclear what action he intends to take on what he perceives as wrongdoing on the part of Amazon.

'It still fits': Engagement ring missing for more than a decade turns up on garden carrotA woman who was resigned to never seeing her beautiful engagement ring ever again - and had bought a smaller one as a replacement - was shocked when her daughter-in-law found it on a carrot. The family had harvested some carrots from their farm in Alberta, Canada, for dinner, and one had grown around the engagement ring, which was then pulled from the ground. Mary Grams, 84, had lost her beloved ring in 2004 while she was in the garden, and thought she would never see it again. "I recognized it right away," she said. I thought for sure either they rototilled it or something happened to it." Mrs Grams has had the ring since 1951, a year before she married her husband, Norman.  Mary, 84, says she didn't know if they were kidding or not, but when her granddaughter brought the carrot over - she knew: "It's mine!" #yegpic.twitter.com/Ft7IMUeSMR— Sarah Kraus Global (@SarahNKraus) August 15, 2017 The ring was found by her daughter-in-law, Colleen Daley. His mother had lost her engagement ring years ago in the garden and never found it again. And it turned up on this carrot."
